Guys, feel like I should know the answer to this but I'm not sure!!!

Does the piston configuration of an engine have any effect on the type of rev counter required?? For example, I'm looking at some period smiths rev counters from Ford Zodiac or Zephyr to go with my Corvair engine. The Fords had 6 cylinder engines but they are not going to be horizontally opposed engines like the Corvair.....would the Corvair engine and rev counter be compatible.

Head says in theory yes as its just a feed from the coil which drives the rev counter but wanted to be sure.....

From my experience of aftermarket ones there was a switch or screw that changed the setting from 4/8 to 6/12 so I would say yes it should be fine.

Agree with Shaggy  it just counts pulses and the switch on the back tells it how many pulses count as one rev (ie the number of cylinders divided by two - set to 4 2 pulses = one rev, set to 6 3 pulses = 1 rev)

Reading that back hope that doesnt overcomplicate it, just set the switch

Std fit from an old 6 cylinder ford. Doesnt even have a switch to choose how many cylinders. Ideally, I'd like a type 3 rev counter but they are rare as rocking horse poo and only for 4 cylinders.

The std Corvair tach isnt that pretty but I do like the look of this one. Yes, gonna need some work, that doesnt bother me.

If its off a 6 cylinder car then it should work fine on another 6 cylinder lump as the number of pulses per rev will be the same

As stated any 12V neg earth 6 cyl one will do. Have a look on the jaguar/triumph sites as the used 6cyls a lot and you may find a better one cheap.

I use a VDO and its jumper configurable for 4, 6 or 8 cylinders... 

you will find after market ones are configurable but manufacturer original fitment ones are just for that ammount of cylinders the car had.

Hi been, I fitted a sunpro super tach 2 to my bus with the corvair. It had the switch between 4, 6 and 8 cylinders and works perfectly on the 6 cylinder option. I'm sure any other tach would work aswell  :-)
