Perhaps we should give you a valve setting lesson, even the hydraulics need checking occassionally.

As Snoopy say's, with the hydraulic lifters; you still need to set the tappets but not as often. The CU and CJ camshafts are the same even though one has solid lifters and one has hydraulic lifters. You can fit solid lifters to the hydraulic cases but not hydraulic lifters to solid lifter cases. You can use either set of rockers with standard cams but with upgraded cams you need the solid spacers type and not the spring spacer type.

Used lifters and camshafts should really be kept matched up in their respective positions but the great thing with type 4 engines is that the lifters can be taken out with only removing the rockers, push rods and push rod tubes ;-)up

With the car being in bits for most of this summer, I really wanted to get at least one trip out before the weather turned, especially as I had a new paint job that I was desperate to show off. I was determined to get the car ready for the Southern leg of the tour, especially as it was passing through my home town of Paignton. With everything back together and running, I headed off to Swanage in the August sunshine.

I still had the Weber carbs on there, that had not been set up yet, so I knew that it was to be a fairly rough journey. The hydraulic tappets had eliminated the "rattle" I had, but it did highlight another older issue, that knock from the engine. A few years back when driving back from N.E.W.S. in the floods, I took on a lot of water that resulted in a loss of oil pressure on the motorway and some internal oil galleries that had emulsified as a result. The engine obviously suffered some damage from this, and has always had a slight knock from the bottom end. I have done around 1000 miles like this, and it was often difficult to hear the severity of the knock over the noise of the rattling valve train. By the time I reached Weymouth, the bottom end was knocking quite nicely, and by the time I reached home it felt as though something was about to come through the side of the block.

Bugger.  :'(

I have since managed to pick up another bottom end from Farmer Rob (Thanks Mate  ;-)up ) and will set about a major engine rebuild in due course, but for the time being, the Buggy is now sitting in the garage, in shame, as the summer is now over.

Tough one Dave and you need to keep an eye on that dog heading for your rear tyre !

But you can still trailer your buggy to events to show it off.....

I needed the AA on Thursday evening here in Herefordshire and it took an hour and three quarters - I now realise they were busy around Dave C in Brum.

Another way of tidying cable is too use spiral wrap and P clamps, lets you cheat if one is too long you can lose the loop

Also means you can add a few wires without having to replace a few thousand cable ties too   ::)

No, I have just added some LED lighting to mine and now wish I had bought some shares in cable tie production   :'(
