I have a 90mph speedo with built in fuel guage, like the the one in the photo.
On my last ride out the odometer stopped working. The speedo still works fine.
I guess it's the gears which have had it. Can they be replaced? (How) Can new ones be obtained? (Where from)

Or has anyone got one of these speedoss knocking about that they:d like to sell??

Possibly just needs a clean, grease can set hard particularly on the cogs for the high numbers that don't move much.

You can strip it down, bend the chrome bezel tags out and undo the screws on the back it will come apart to see the oddometer if you remove the gear mounting pin you can zero it. A Dave says may just need a clean and light oil applying.

Odometer drive gears......  These three gears transfer drive from the main gear to the odometer spindle.   These three in the image date from 1972. In all the sppeedo`s I have refurbished these gears have been identical but always check.

Explanation.....  speedo cable connects to the main drive gear. This spins the "spin wheel" which being magnetic moves the speedo needle without touching it.
The odometer can be adjusted or zeroed, whichever you choose, with ease..

Now then to remove the outer face simply with care unfold the folded over section of the "cover ring". You just need a small length of the perimeter levered outwards to free the whole ring from the speedo body. Do this as carefully as you can. The more patience the less distortion you will have to deal with. Then - in order to re-secure the outer ring neatly use a small electricians screw driver to tap the folds back in place The result will look surprisingly neat.

I do not have any spare gears. They appear to be nylon. Sometimes whitish in colour, sometimes black. I have never seen any stripped of their teeth but that is not to say this cannot occur. Whilst apart drop it little light machine oil, (3 in 1 etc), very sparingly, onto the centre spindle of the magnetic ring and rotate ring until free movement occurs. Ie no serious drag. Before refitting the odometer drive gears spin the wheel with a drill bit or a section of a small allen key in a drill at the cable end of the drive. Slowly at first and increase drill speed as you go. Bit of oil in there as well. Next lightly grease the main gear and use something like vaseline on the nylon gears.

does anyone know of a supplier in the uk  of the chrome  or black  crimped  speedo trim rings ,  or know if the later  one fit  from the mexican beetles  fit  as these are not crimped   so can easily removed and replaced    without any damage   

Are you meaning this when you say "trim ring" which is a separate item from the speedo "bezel. ?

no paul the trim ring on rear of speedo   you have to   lever of to  get access to inside of speedo

i know you can buy them from germany     as already bought them for the vw   52mm guages and porsche       just hoping someone in the uk sells them    to save duty

Not seen the speedo bezel sold anywhere in the UK. If anyone finds an outlet please let me know 

maybe the mexican beetle one will fit  paul  loads better idea  where it can be removed and replaced    easily

VW were notorious for changing things on the Beetle. There used to be a magazine called "Safer Motoring" which my best mate bought religiously each month for many years. (He was responsible for my Beetle addiction). Each year the magazine held a competition with regard to interior-exterior changes. You won if you were able to recognise a change. Cannot remember if there was a prize. Have to say it was notoriously difficult because the changes were often so subtle you needed a magnifying glass with a bug in front of you to find the change/s.            I have never had the pleasure of meeting a Mexican Bug.   
My buggy build was based on a Beetle imported from South Africa. It soon became apparent that the vin number or date of manufacture was totally useless for referencing against replacement parts.
