No buggy yet, but seriously looking into getting one and ended up here looking for info (be warned, stoopid questions will follow soon)
Would love to do a fresh build, but here in the Netherlands it's no longer possible to get a (newly) shortened beetle pan licenced
So I'll probably end up with something to rebuild

He bought it new at a VW dealer in '73 of '74 (I was 4 - you do the math  )



IIRC he said it was a "Sandman" but not sure about that, maybe someone here recognises it?

Hello and welcome.

The original US Sandman buggies were copies of the Safari design.

One was indeed brought over to the Netherlands from the US in 1968, moulds were taken from it and it sold quite well in various guises. The Hot Rod Doesburg buggy which was still being sold until fairly recently has it's roots in the Safari/Sandman design.

Welcome, can you import a swb from the UK if it is correctly registered here then modify/rebuild to what you want as a buggy.

That buggy looks like it has excessive head room for driver and passenger.

Sadly for some that was one of the freedoms lost in the Brexit vote. A friend's nice little business exporting Caterhams and MGBs to France closed down virtually overnight when we left the EU, the extra paperwork imposed from both ends made continuing almost impossible thanks to Borris, Farage et al.

You have a buggy for the nice weather

Seller had very little info on the car, but it looked like a solid build, so I went with it
I'll dig through it some more tomorrow and post what I know / find in a "my buggy" thread
It was recently imported form Norway, paperwork says 1969, but it has swingaxles (early 1969?)
Engine is supposed to be a 1300, but it has dual port heads and a "hotter" cam
Runs plenty strong, no leaks (yet) and didn't skip a beat on the 100 mile home journey
Quite a few things I'd like to change, some short term, others can wait till winter

Yeah, got quite the sunburn today 

I had a 1975 1200 beetle with swing axle in rhd here in the UK that was in 1985 so only 10 years old.
1300 did come with TP heads but it could be anything a 1641 upgrade only needs barrels, pistons and 1600 heads or 1300 ones machined, the only way to find out 100% is a head off but if it runs fine it is best left alone the trouble free 100 miles drive home is a good sign.
