anyone got a diagram for the alternator with 3 pin external regulator? batterys not charging so think i may have it alllll wrong haha.  If anyone has any pointers i would be grateful. Could take pics of alternator and regulator when i get home form work.

it only has the 3 pins on the inside. and that is it.

depends on your regulator mine only has the 61 charge warning light wire plus the three to the alternator it is a standard pre 1974 vw unit off a 1700 van.

alternator connections to regulator
D+ (1mm wire red) to D+ (0.5mm wire blue to dash lamp)
DF (1mm wire green) to DF
D- (1mm wire brown) to D-
B+ (6mm wire red/white) to 30 on starter motor same post as + (RED) wire from battery

Thanks for all the info guys. Not had chance to view untill now. Been a mad few days. Timing belt snapped on my daily haha. Will try get into the garage this weekend and make some amends to the wiring.

I have my Alternator wired up as this is..

From the 3 pins DF D+ D- no power output from Alternator   B+ to battery 20 volts.. Is my rectifier knackered ??

If you have 20 volts when running the regulator is not functioning was it ok and just started over charging. You will ruin the battery and coil that high if it runsfor a while.

its a new regulator. I have not been running the engine for long a minute or so max for now just to set things up. I will get another ordered.

I seem to remember a fauly batch a while ago but may be wrong. As you have a new regulator a wiring check would be in order just to ensure you have not got a problem. Does the ignition warning light work correctly?

Am I right in re-calling that unlike a dynamo an alternator has to be "excited" before it will generate a charge hence the continuity provided by the warning lamp connection..

Dreamed  this up somewhere in the past 

Took the Reg off the beetle which i checked worked fine before i removed it. Tried it on the Buggy.. Same Light stays on. I put the lights on too and still the light stayed on.

I wired the speedo as the wiring diagram on the post about wiring.

Is there something i can do to the back of Alternator to check? As said B+ to earth gives 20+ volts !! Whilst D+ or DF or D- give me no output.

Your ignition warning light wire should T into the DF wire to the regulator. The regulators have 4 terminals of which 3 are used and an earth for the casing. It would appear that yours is not sensing the battery voltage so is unregulated to 20 V
