I have a question some of the more informed on here may be able to answer, so assuming said Beach Buggy has passed an IVA and has received an age related plate, a bit further down the line will it be possible to put an private plate on it. The private plate being newer than the age related plate but on the V5C states date of first registration 2025 ?  :-\

Great news on IVA pass and I guess as a 2025 registration and paying road tax a newer private plate should be fine.

Technically speaking, the only thing I think that you cannot do is to put an age related plate on that is newer than the car

IE: you cannot put an age related 2010 plate on a 2001 vehicle or make it look newer than it is - but you can put a 2001 on a 2010 if that makes sense

As far as the rest goes, I think that it is possible to put a private plate on just about anything (even if DVLA put restrictions on) and I have even heard numerous cases now where Q plates have been changed too - not sure how that works for tax / mot implications though - do your own research on that one.

Yes wife's buggy passed first time in February, strangely no model listed on V5C, I was told by KAR that there was no code for our model of vehicle so it's left blank

Unless DVLA do it themselves of course, like my '59 registered buggy on an A plate following a number plate swap in the '70s and my old '67 Notchback which was on a Y plate following it's import from Belgium.

Here are my thoughts based on a few years now of delving into dvsa talking to the day to day operatives, supervisors and above this level. Forgive my rambling as I try to bring into this thread a number of factors so they are in one place.
Firstly however big congrats on IVA success. It`s pleasing to know I am not alone in going thro` the latest version of this inspection which is way above things of it`s infancy.
Now down to the nitty gritty. Anyone as old, or near to old as I am, will know that dvla and subsequently dvsa has been a complete messed up operation from the moment responsibility was taken away from the local offices. How you could have two dept` of transport sections, (Vosa & Dvla), so closely affiliated but not sharing each other database/s is beyond comprehension but that has how it has been for decades. (There is now some common interface hence the police force ability to check your details from a registration number almost instantly as do insurance brokers). They want to fix things as they are aware of the shortcomings but the ever involving plans never come to fruition due to lack of funding and hence manpower. I no longer believe the planned one off additional check during an annual mot for non legal motors of all variation with the V5C being cancelled instantly by those qualified to carry out mot inspection will ever become reality.

Q plates..... One of the areas dept of tr` accept is totally messed up as over the decades interpretation etc was whatever the individual dealing with the case dreamed up. The Q plate intent changed over and over again.  As things stand.... In theory once a Q plate is issued it is there for life and "cannot be changed" Has this been stuck to diligently?  no of course not. One fact is stated..... "should a registration be pulled the only way to get back on the road is via "re-registration". For this read 1st registration". i.e. following iva process. Has this been stuck to diligently ?   That I cannot answer.

That`¬s enough of that then....  To the point of speedy`s query......
(The model field that appears on the V5C...... Mine is not blank. Despite VOSA accepting the "model" as being a Beach Buggy in my case and this appearing on all IVA documentation including on the issued certificate of compliance you received, (the IAC certificate), and this certificate being sent to dvla for 1st registration purpose the model field on my v5c states "sports convertible". This is the inconsistency that has always existed and still does despite the formation of the K & R section. There are V5C`s out there with "beach buggy" in this very field so it can be done. Why it isn`t across the board is exactly what the problem is. "The left hand does not know what the right hand "does".

Is this all relevant to speedy`s query you may ask. Well I say yes....... The facts are that no matter what rule exists the compliance by dvla operatives is "here, there and every where". I will make this statement....... Go ahead and approach the K & R dept again. You will already know you can speak to a case operative via a direct phone call. There must be as much chance of being able to go to a private plate as there is of not being able to.  They have proved that there is no consistency of appliance more times than you and I have had hot dinners  ;D

Morning snoopy. Just back from the school run and getting togged up for another cold day. Wind is biting but we have had a bit of sunshine lately amid the rain  ;-)up  ;-)up  What really baffles me is that when you submit a first registration application Is that the two fields exist. There have been Beach Buggy insertions alongside Volkswagen, Beetle and so on and the V5C in everyday use so we know any variation of the alphabet can be inserted into their records so why can you not get "beach buggy" every time it appears on the submitted request on new registration or existing V5C change applications. It doesn`t make sense does it ?

Its because the phrase "BEACH BUGGY" is still regarded as a Generic term and not officially Manufacturer endorsed

You will probably only see it appear when it has been asked for by an appropriate person following a relevant inspection

We need the days of local licensing offices back where you walked in and talked to a human being and the car could be in the car park if they wanted a look out of the window, life was much simpler then and you got an answer on the spot.

Yes, and yours has probably been inspected - hence the official request for the name change

The wifes buggy is not even down as VW just invade but that was at a local tax office on paperwork not a computer so no inspection the very most would have been the pilice to check the numbers were not from stolen vehicles.

But thats my point - that request came from an Official body, ok it may not have been IVA inspected, but the request was made through an approved person at a local tax office

Basically - its not something that Joe Public should try to do themselves simply by amending the V5 and sending it off
