You should have bid Dave, there is a seized 1300tp with water in the oil, gearbox they said failed but gear lever will not nove from 1st or 3rd, pans are rotten, seats for bin or recover as had suffered water ingress and everything is rusty and seized but the battery still had 12.3 volts in so that is fine and on charge.

...and for the connoisseur it is already resplendent yellow.

Oojamaflip -was it the official MOT certified "exhaust noisy" that particularly attracted you ?

5years outside with no cover and a pancake oil filter have ruined a rebuilt 1300 it has all been done up with new b&p oil cooler heads were spotless and the case has been resealed so a good bottom end if not water damaged.
Sump drain was 4.8 litres of clear water and 100 ml of emulsified oil.
New barrels rusted beyond use , heads may clean up but good spares are here.
Carb was also full to level with water.

The moral of the story is outside storage keep it covered.

Oh this is wicked or rather elementally lazy. It would have taken 20 minutes to bung up apertures and cover the whole engine so most if not all components came through ready to ease back into working action.

Engine strip is a couple of hours max this took 7 hours and some serious levering and whoever assembled it just went for stupid tight or loose as the tightening options.

I can understand literally litres of water getting into the engine but hadn't realised the oil would effectively 'swap out.'

I thought you'd still have a few litres of oil with water on top.

No idea on the oil Hugh the water was not high enough to make it over flow out unless whoever took the motor out drained it as the flywheel was going to be replaced.
Unbolted the bonnet  a well rusted nut either side under the front wings came off easily then it lifted off better hinged with a catch on the kango as there is masses of storage under therr.
Studs fibreglassed on do a good job for bonnet fixings never considered it before.

Case and crank are salvageable and now after a nice buggy trip out in October they are up at Kingfishers for line bore check, thrust cut and crank polish. Whilst in polish mode a quick 5 minutte test on the body with T cut and Mer it comes up quite nice

Thanks Oojamaflip - I've got your measure.

This has 'come up' well and DC could have string competition for future show & shine trophy's.

As for mastering faded yellow, you may well mock but it's a dying art and being able to sensitively apply over spray is yet another of my talents.

Still awaiting the V5 to arrive but with winter coming thought time to see what I have then decide the way forwards.
Drivers seat is seized solid on the slides with limited access so body off time then a lump hammer between the raised body and pan got it off in about 5 mins hitting it side at a time.
Pans are toast but original 1971 VW ones bottom of naps hat on the kerb side has gone but the rest is good.
As a bonus it had new brakes all around not long before the drive failure so only surface rust even the callipers function under the cobwebs. Front beam is solid which is surprising on a seaside buggy just everything else on the steering and suspension is corroded.

'What you have' Snoopy is what appears to be a rather attractive yellow buggy in your car port that in fact is a facade.

You can possibly get a stand in engine and replacement seats but the chassis welding plus new pans sounds a bit of a challenge.

Nice one Snoopy, I too saw this on ebay and thought that however bad it was under the body it would still be a good buy due to the V5 description and what looked like a body in reasonably good condition. Another buggy you are saving from that black hole where buggies go to die
Have fun. Be lucky

And good that the previous buggy owner sensibly had an excellent condition braking system.
