Hi all,

I picked up a 2nd hand CB Performance 1.5 quart deep sump. Some questions about fitting if I may, please - I spanner on the street and need everything ready before I start draining oil!

Is it typical to swap the case studs for longer versions or do deep sumps normally bolt straight on? The sump has ~3.5mm thickness where it goes over the studs. Not sure what the standard cover/strainer thickness would be?

What size is the standard oil pick up pipe? I have a slotted extension pipe, but I'm thinking about using flexible hose instead to cut down on possible suction leaks? (believe I read that suggestion on the forum).

Do people still run an oil strainer with a deep sump...if so, how? the drain plate I have is considerably larger than standard. (CB-P do offer a filter kit on their website, but I haven't found a supplier here).

From memory as I fitted mine years ago, a grown up will be along later to correct if I'm wrong.

Bolts. I seem to remember removing the studs and using socket head bolts which a touch of loctite. Whether they were necessary or simply made fitting possible I don't remember as I reckon it would be pretty tricky to get the nuts and washers back on compared to using a long Allen key. Obviously you need a new gasket between the sumps.

Extension pipe. I too didn't like the look of the slotted one and when I tried it the angle was crazy. I cut off the belled slotted piece and used oil and heat proof hose.

Sump strainer. Still needed and almost impossible to fit unless you can straighten out the extension pipe, a bit of flexibility in the hose sorts that

 Andy note the one stud has a nut inside the case to hold the oil strainer down.

I know its an old post but why not!! If it is a CB one with its own size sump plate they have longer studs easy to make or buy ..... An old oil vent pipe off the oil fill up stand is the same size ..So a cut and weld job ... Or make a slip on one all ways use steel and have the right gap .. I seen a lot of engines where people take out the strainer and that nut ends up in the oil pump All ways use it.. Now do you need a deep sump probably not!!. Oil filter is more important..

I can say this with experience  once fitted .make mental note of height of the black stuff to underside of sump---easily forgotten are high kerbs in car parks where the sump stops you =  been there done that in France

I guess you would need to watch some of those centralised speed bumps too - Nightmare around here and one of the reasons my Buggy rides higher than most

the Studs are M6 x 33mm long

and depending on the engine there are 3 different oil pick tube extentions
