So, as the prvious mechanic dismantled the porsche style fan due to the alternator needing to be replaced (which he didnt do) it also appears hes stripped one of the threads of the bolt holes that secures the strap that holds the fan housing. It will need retapping, but to do that i think ill have to split the motor and i font have a the facilities to do that. Anyone any suggestions to the contrary?

Post a photo of the problem. It's hard to tell where the stripped thread is by your description as Porsche type fans were not that common.

To get to that hole, think ill need to remove the shroud, the oil filler dipstick arrangement.

If i remember right, thats a blind hole. At least i hope it is as i need to drill and tap an M8 and dont really want bits in my engine, or at this stage have to split the engine.

If it's a stripped thread in a blind hole could it be tapped out to take a Helicoil? I'm not too familiar with Type 4 cases.

You could try tapping it to 1/4 AF as that is a fraction bigger than 6mm so it may grip on a bolt or fit a stud and use thread lock to secure it.

Fitting a helicoil will result in a larger hole than if i drill for an M8. I thought about that too, but im not sure i like that approach. Good idea about using a stud instead, but then here in Germany, not so much imperial measurement stuff anymore. Im pretty convinced that just sizing up to M8 will work. Thanks for the input though!!

You can buy m8 to m6 screw thread adapters.  I use them on the FF roof mounts as the mounts are aluminium and the insert are steel, so harder wearing.

You could use the oil drain repair studs they are 8mm to the 6mm drain plate.

I ended up going to M8s. Will look at improving the support bar behind the fan itself too.
