So, I had hadn't noticed but the GP Mot ran out a few days ago.

It's Historic on the V5 and doesn't strictly need one, but common sense says get it done I reckon.

Tried to book into my favourite Mot station and they can't recognise my number plate?

Booked it in for Saturday, against my name.

Obviously the buggy exists! But I don't want an issue caused by the tester manually entering potentially problematic details to 'get it on the system' on the morning of the test.

Any ideas please - is this common?

I think DVLA must be having a meltdown at the moment, they didn`t recognise my car on the database when calling the AA, they only knew it as VW - Unknown

Andy it will be fine the buggy was correctly re-registered in 1972 as a GP beach buggy when built. so you could go for mot exemption however with the data base and insurance companies using get out clauses an mot is a good idea.

Yup, I figured it would be alright - I know it was Mot'd no problemo last time and I can see it fine on the .gov site myself, it's just the garage said it came back vehicle unknown against the reg number on their booking system

DVLA & VOSA used to use two independant databases I was once told by dvla.

Dvla became DVSA after merging with SVA so maybe the individual softwares cannot talk to each other very well even now.

I am trying to be kind here and blame the tools and not the users 

 

They did ask me to repeat the number 3 times and then asked if it was a Northern Ireland registration!

I thought DVLC became DVLA, SVA became BIVA and VOSA became DVSA?

It's correct about DVLA and DVSA both having different data bases.

You might be right here Dave. I have had so many "conversations" over the years with dvla that I may well have mixed up memories. Pity I have no video recordings of the conversations. It is really difficult getting non north east folk to understand the geordie accent. 

(I recently tried to see if my first beetle , YLF 23, still existed. It doesn`t appear to but what a job convincing the person on the "other end of the line" that a three letter plus 3 number registration existed.    )

My buggy is down on the log book as a beach buggy but how do you find out when that was changed from a beetle.

I always get an MOT but I would like to know when the buggy was first built.
looking on the samba site my chassis and engine were made in March 1969 so does that mean it was registered Feb 71 as a Buggy or was that when it was first registered as a beetle .

As the words "Beach Buggy" did not officially appear within the DVLA printed vocabulary until fairly recently, it is unlikely that the car would be MOT exempt (if that was your thinking) as you would not have enough "Buggy Years" under your belt.

The Mk2 GP Superbuggy wasn't introduced until 1976 so unless it was built as a buggy in 1971 and subsequently rebodied then who knows? DVLC/DVLA weren't around then, logbooks were issued and/or changed by local councils so it could well have been registered as a Beach Buggy since then. Mine has been down as Make: VW Beach Buggy on logbooks and subsequent V5 and V5C documents since 1976.

Easiest is to accept what the V5 says and just mot it. I sent Dave the details of an old Ford that omn the DVSA mot data base had 2 pages of failures in Feb 19 but somw were examiners lack of knowledge. However this car was at a meet last week and the DVLA tax site shows taxed, no mot and mot not due till May 2020.

So what the ANPR susyem show is a guess but I would think it is liable for a pull.
