As a starter, back to basics. Is the air filter/s clean. May be getting choked :-\

It would be useful to know a bit more about your setup

Single or twin carb ?  Inlet rubber Air leaks?  Rotor arm and cap ok ?  Exhaust leaks?

Are you running a regulator between your mechanical fuel pump and the carbs?  The mechanical can push out too much pressure and flood them.

Remove your distributor, give mating surfaces a good clean, remove any paint. Refit and test.
I had a very similar problem, the car would start no problem, but once warming would start popping and hissing. Found electronic ignition needs a max' resistance <0.1 ohms. You can measure this between the battery earth terminal and advance plate of the distributor. I found paint was preventing the electronics working properly. Once clean all is good. Incidentally, you can fit points and a condenser. This set up isn't bothered about a decent earth.
Give it a go  :-\

So have I got this right? does it play up under light load, by this I mean at a constant speed in each gear? Or when you take your foot off the throttle?

If it starts OK and accelerates OK, the problem is blocked idle jets!! Has it been left standing for a while? this causes the carbs to dry out leaving scaly deposits which blocks the idle jets and small passageways.

When you say  Weber 35's, are these single choke carb's; unlike the twin choke Weber IDF's or Dellorto DRLA's?  Sometimes just cleaning the idle jets works but most of the time, you have to clean the whole carburettor, blowing out all the passageways! ;-)up
