Hi there, I've decided to take a break from jap cars and just bought myself a vw buggy as a project toy. I think ideas quite lucky picking it up for £500 being mechanically sound other than the brakes and also needing exhaust, windscreen. Also alot of cosmetic work. I think it's currently got a 1600 twinport so what I'm wondering is what people think on keeping that in it or giving me other ideas of what engines are more or less a good fit?! I've heard a flat four Scooby or Porsche 914 are options. Thanks in advance! Cheers, Aaron 👍

welcome, 1600 tp motor is fine around 50 bhp in a buggy weighing 600 kgs twin carbs and a decent exhaust improve things, scooby conversion is pretty common and gives 120 bhp + or the 411.412 or 914 motors are an easier fit and give 80bhp + depending on spec.

A location would be good as there may be members near you for looking at stuff, info and hrlp.

1600TP is a good lump to have in a Buggy - Suggest to get it on the road first with that one and then think about any upgrades (if you need it)

Buggy weighs nothing, so you may be quite surprised how well the 1600 performs !

Welcome. I run a 1600TP that has been tweaked and has twin Weber IDF 40s. Getting a nice solid 80hp with 60 at the wheels. Plenty for me. I'd stick with it, as Dave says and see what you think. The fun is in the building and then it's all smiles per miles 

Thanks guys from the sounds of it I think I'll stick with what it has then. Is it best to stick with an air cooled engine then should I change it at some point? I live near shaftesbury which is north Dorset. I'm looking for a dash, windscreen and exhaust so if anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great Cheers 👍 when I figure out how to post pictures then I'll show you what it currently looks like.

Engine is mostly down to budget and choice of wanting to either simple cruise and enjoy the central buggy experience or have some extra bhp to be able to leave the car park sharpish !
