Front and rear empty wide 5 setup.  2 psi residual pressure valve on the rear circuit.

Difference.

  • No brake fade under hard lane driving.
  • Never need adjusting
  • Locks up really easy

Can't really state the difference over drug all round, when I got my buggy had disks on the front, but the callipers had been chewed by the wide 5 adapters the previous owner had fitted.  One of the rear drums was full of oil too.

My real reason for fitting is that I like the convenience of disks.  No adjustment and always easy to take off for other repairs.

the main reason I went to front discs on the daily was so they worked after being in large puddles. Very little to choose on efficiency but discs will make your wheels dirty as drums keep dust in.

Is that a good or bad point?  Wheels can easily be cleansed.  Drums fill with dust.

Neither just an observation as my wheels get dirty these days as they used to stay clean :D

I fitted an empi kit to front and back.

I think the brakes are less noisey, stop slightly quicker and have no real issues with maintaining them. The stopping quicker may be subjective as it depends how often you re-adjust the drum brakes, how clean the drums were etc etc etc.

I have discs on the front and drums at rear, advised on here to fit larger front wheel cyllinders to rear to increase rear brake power as was lock8ng up the fronts . I have no fuel tank up front, spare wheel or metal bodywork so discs are probabably too much on my buggy that is light on the front. Much better now but still need to be very gentle on the brakes.

I've discs around, upgraded  :-\ from drums . You need to ensure the correct master cylinder is fitted. As previously said, no disenable brake improvement over well set up drums. Less maintenance, lack of fade and convenience threw it for me.

I built my current one with front discs standard rear drums. Previously had a buggy with drums all round.
As I neede brakes of some sort I went for discs up fromt for ease of set up and ease of ongoing maintenance.
I tried to use 2psi residual pressure valves but couldn't seem to get any with the correct thread to attach to the standard VW brake pipes. In the end I thought I'd try without and they are fine.
Only locking issue I have is on loose surfaces when vraking fairly hard.

We've got standard beetle discs on the front and Porsche 944 rear brakes on the Fugitive.

Bit of panic breaking on Sunday and it stopped very well, looked a few wheels but has big tyres and not much weight

Discs all around here, as someone else said, much more consistant, especially after going through water.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him think.
Experience only counts if you have the knowledge to use it.
