This may be a daft question, but I`m still learning.

I`m getting me head around MIG welding quite nicely now, and about to get myself a roll of stainless wire for having a play - that bit I understand.

I am also looking into TIG welding and picking up a machine to have a play with and self learn. Now I have seen people who are welding use a "Filler Rod" to fill up the holes, yep I understand that bit - but my question is,

Is the roll of Stainless MIG wire I have suitable to use as a filler rod for TIG or do I need to be using something else?

You could get away with it, but it'd be a nightmare feed it fast enough, especially if you're learning. TIG filler rods are generally a lot thicker and stiffer - you'd usually use say 1.6mm for most.

I have used mig wire for TIGing before - but it was only on really thin material (0.6mm)
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him think.
Experience only counts if you have the knowledge to use it.

How thick is the stainless wire on the roll? As already said you may need to feed in the wire at a fast rate. It depends on what amps you are welding with.

You can also weld stainless with mig just ensure you use pure argon. You will also need argon for tig

If it's like 0.8 I get like 2m of it and twist it like lock wire drill works,, I do the same on er70 for car body work as I get it so cheap,, I have used 0.8 lock wire as it is 302 stainless the same way before,,
Do not be offended by my spelling mistakes! Why asking tech? questions" As so far I have not asked Any,, Everyone fort it was in possible apart from the One who invented it..
