Evenin folks, i have never been completly happy with the way the rear licence plate light sat, now that could just be that somewhere along the lines someone measured once and drilled 6 times and ended up with a bit of overhang over the rear plate, light looks similar to this

now ive seen some yank plates that have led suround lights instead of the normal way of things mainly show or truck plates + their plates are smaler than ours, and i like this idea of not having an actual fitting seperate from the plate,, ive come across this on flea bay looks prety much like what im trying to do,, chrome plate surround with built in light nice and tight,

So what i'm wondering is is this leagal as the stand alone lighting for the rear plate??
my other option would be the led bolt lights but not sure if they would illuminate enough as they seem to be aimed at bikes and are they legal either??
thoughts/suggestions/ideas feedback from anythin to everythin welcome

I have 4 led light bolts on a square plate, no complaints yet

Got 2 led bolt lights on our square plate, the rules say it illuminates the plate and does not show white light to the rear nothing about reading the plate from a distance with them. The led frame would be ok and use a small wire to power it off the rear lights.

Just be careful about the angle that the illuminated surround ends up to the body, otherwise you may inadvertently show the white lights to the rear, and that would not be allowed.

LEDs are still a grey area for this, but so long as they do their job and you cannot see them directly - they seem to be widely acceptable.

I have the standard long plate on the back, if the rear plate was square then either way i dont think id have a problem with using either an american style surround or the bolts, just took a pick of the angle the plate will sit at, tried to use the garage door as a vertical eye lvl, now as i said the original light overhung the plate and so light from it was pitched at a more outward angle than the plate and it still managed to pass x amount of mots like it did, but with the leds being a lot brighter than standard hmm??

By the letter of the law a number plate has to be vertical although up to 15 degrees slope is allowed. Having an led bolt at the ends shining across will not show white light to the rear but as Dave says the led frame will probably show white light to the rear which will be an excuse for mr plod to stop you.
