No, for some reason there is no public record of IVA tests but if you're thinking of buying a used buggy that wouldn't be relevant as there are only two swb buggies registered that I know for certain have been tested.

As for a used buggy the important checks are is it correctly registered on the V5C; it could have one of many any varied descriptions such as Beach Buggy, Convertible, 4x4 light utility and others. 'Beetle' on the logbook is pretty much a no-no though.

Also check that the chassis number on the chassis' tunnel at the rear, in front of the oval shaped inspection panel matches the paperwork.

It could have Historic taxation class if registered 40+ years ago which would mean that road tax is free which is a bonus, but pretty much all buggies need to be MOTd following changes to regulations last month so don't let the seller fob you off...

Just to add to that list David - my log book says Volkswagen Beetle Sports

Its a LWB and was checked by VOSA to confirm identity (no IVA or whatever it is / was required).  I asked for MK4 Volksrod (cause that's what it is) but they said no it was a Sports

Important information about the campsite

Just wanted to clear up a couple of points about the campsite T&C's

• Due to over head power cables you are not allowed flag poles on your camping setup - afraid it's a case of leaving those at home
• The T&C's say no group bookings - I spoke to the campsite owners before I posted - they are fully aware we are coming - don't worry about it
• The T&C's of the campsite also say no tow vehicles or trailers - again I have spoken to them and it won't be an issue if you tow your buggy up.  Just let them know when you make the booking

Usual buggy weekend format - pitch up Friday, buggy cruise on Saturday taking in the awesome Dukes Pass (make sure your arm muscles are in tip top shape) and then a chilled out Saturday night

Strangely, no, not part of the test for class 4.
If it was a quad, then there is a section on mudguards...

Cars doesn't have that section in the test, so it will pass the MOT even though it fails C&U.... so can pass MOT, drive 100m and get stopped by a copper who could then prohibit it from being driven

it'll be getting mudguards anyway but the fabricator who is doing the work is right on the road in the next village, so this is much much easier than leaving it on a trailer all day outside his unit on the road, or bending tubes, taking away checking, returning etc

As above mudguards are C&U not MOT.  They are designed to stop spray and debris getting thrown up - the gray area is if its dry then there is no spray, therefore they are not required.   

Have heard some fenderless hot-rodders carry cycle fenders that can be quickly bolted on - "sorry officer - I was at a show and took them off - I'll bolt them on now...."


However - I heard a story (not sure how much truth is in it) where a rodder got stopped, used the line above, bolted his cycle fenders on then the police booked him as they were far too small / completely useless...

Directions to the site

I need to pick up supplies on route (travelling from the south):

Come off the M74 at Junction 18 (sign posted Lockerbie / Dumfries).  At end of road turn right, follow road to roundabout and take 3rd exit into Lockerbie.  Follow the road about 1/2 a mile and there is a petrol station on the left.  Continue further down this road to the traffic lights (police station on the right - behave yourselves...  ).  Turn right and follow road into Tesco's carpark (open till 10 PM).  When you leave Tesco go straight through the traffic lights and take the 2nd road on right (sign posted Beattock, Annan, Motorway).  At end of road turn right- keep following this road for about 7 miles.  Johnstonebridge is on the left.



Brought some supplies with me / will get them later after I pitch my tent:

Come off the M74 at Junction 16 (sign posted Johnstonebridge / Services).  At roundabout take first exit.  At top of the hill turn left.  Johnstonebridge is on the right.


Navigating the 3 streets of Johnstonebridge

Turn into Johnstonebridge (large sandstone block with village name and a gold phone box) - follow the road round to the left, take the first left.  Folllow the road through the top half of the village.  The community centre is on the right, just after the school.  Find a space in the carpark and we are camped behind the building 


Petrol

As above there is a petrol station in Lockerbie (about 7 miles away from the site).  There is the petrol at the motorway service station, but it costs a fortune.  The cruise out on Saturday goes through Moffat and we can stop for fuel then, but there is about 10 miles from leaving the site to Moffat


Food / Beer

There are supermarkets in Lockerbie and Moffat.  If you don't want to cook your own:

McDonalds at the service station (1 mile)
Lockerbie Truck Stop (3 miles) - does sit in / takeaway meals.  It is a truck stop so food isn't fancy, but it is better than service station food 
Take-aways - Lockerbie (7 miles)
Various Pubs - Lockerbie or Moffat (7 / 10 miles)

or - catch a haggis in the local hills 



Arrival time

I won't be on-site until 14:30ish on the Friday (Brodie at school so we are picking him up at lunchtime then heading down).  If you arrive before me and there is no one at the centre you can contact my dad.  Walk 200 yards back into the village (past the school and the big white house on the left).  My dads house is the next house on the left - number 8.  I'll ask him to put his number up on the centre door with his number - save you the walk
