Title: Timing setting
Post by: Mikeohope on April 06, 2013, 08:57:19 PM
Hi, does anyone know the correct timing setting for an AR series engine. Can't find it listed in any of the manuals I have.

Cheers

It's definitely AR.I've found AR series engines referred to on the web but can't find the timing settings. It's apparently a 1300 dual port

If its an all original AR 1300 twinport with stock 31pict3 carb and distributor (model number escapes me at the moment) its timed to 7.5 BTDC.
Easiest done with a test light with the engine off.

All VW engine pulleys have a TDC mark, beetle ones are on the outside of the pulley, its a big wide dimple, then just the timing notches on the inside.

All my 1600 and 1300 twinport engines AR, AS, AB, AD have just had one notch at 7.5BTDC but it may vary in different countries, as we never had double vacuum distributors on beetles here so there's no 5atdc marks.

Hope Laughing I can help you guys out. I;m a VW mechancic of 28yrs and now retired in Baja MX. Over the yrs have seen all engines from the early 25HP on up to the 1600cc. Did my share of drag racing a NHRA VW dragster and also into Turbos.
VW did have all kinds of dists that were over the yrs interchanged etc thus confusing many as to the correct timing. True timing is determined by the dist and NOT the engine number.
A single non/vac dist or a single vac dist should have the timing at a total of 30 degrees set on a timing light with the tdc showing at aprox 850-950 RPM.
A dual vac dist needs to have the front/rear thicker vac hose disconnected so the dist will function as a single unit and the above timing used also.
