My buggy started off life as a chassis, sat in Manxdavids yard, all forlorn, just waiting for a new owner.............

Andy R had a battery box like mine made by the same guy. In the end he didnt use it, so i bought it from him and have fitted it. Going to get a lid on it. Will provide some secure storage in the buggy!

Meant to get some more just done this weekend but is snowed on and off all afternoon and was so raw and cold i packed up. Wanted to do some today but im not feeling great.

Made a start on the final bits today.

Main job was tidy the dash wiring. I wanted to be able to undo just a few plugs and then be able to remove the bonnetOrder some weather proof connectors and set about hacking apart my loom. Took far longer than expected (what buggy job doesnt....) but ive got two of them in. The hazard switch wiring and the lighting circuit are now complete and do work. Wipers, fuel gauge/warning light pod and then a multiplug for all the earths which id also forgotten about..............hey ho.

Have two more to do but need to order a few more of the bits that go into the plugs as id forgotten about wire sizes id already used that would have to go into one side of the plug..........bugger.

Also got the handbrake cables measured up (again) an are ready to be sent.

Well,

About time I updated this. Its still not quite finished. Pretty much every weekend since Christmas that I haven't been working, I've tried to get the buggy out, only for it to be raining or snowing..... ::)

Anyhow, this weekend just gone the weather was much better, which is more than I can say for me. Despite feeling like utter sh..e, I got the buggy out. All the main dash wiring plugs are now spliced in. This means I've got perhaps 5 plugs to undo and the whole bonnet will come off. Its also tidied up the wiring a load. All I need to do now is route the stuff properly behind the dash and build a small loom for the instrument lighting and that's finished. Was going to send off the handbrake cable todsag but I've been in bed all D's day I'll.

Its taken me a couple of days  >:( but thus dash wiring is finally finally complete.

There were just too many wires behind there to make taking the bonnet of anything other than a Krypton factor challenge. The T3 clocks, light and hazard switches, power socket etc. It was just a pita.

Still, tidy now and at last got the ring that goes round the hazard switch machined out to fit (who knew the screw rings were different diameters between the hazard and light switches... ::) )

Anyhow, pleased with that. Forgot completely about the earths....fixed that today. I need one more all weather connector plug to finish of something extra I threw in which should be here tomorrow and we are done. That's a two minute job.

Got all week off so trying to get pretty much finished this week. Only thing that's gonna run over will be the airbox and heater tubes on the exhaust. The wife's Fiesta of Doom is back in the garage for a cam belt tomorrow so I won't get much done as ill drop the car off and go to my mums. Need to ring Flatlands too and buy some body supports for the front.

Today, the cavalry got called in.

A weekend of trying and failing last weekend Sapped all my enthusiasm. A call to the Cavalry (and Dan) ensued.

Queue Shaggy turning up at my gaff today and helping me loads has helped progress the project.

I now have a fully functioning handbrake. The hub nuts are now done up to the proper torque and the split pins put in. The fuel lines (soft hoses) All got replaced with proper J30 R9 ethanol Resistant stuff. Clutch got adjusted.

Identified a few other jobs that need doing but overall a damn good day. Far closer than I've ever been to an MOT

I'm just waiting for some body supports from Flatlands and once fitted, the fuel tank can go back in and I can fit the screen to the bonnet. Just need to then fit the bonnet and the wing beading, wait for my air box and we are done.

It was the shot in the arm I needed. Shaggy is a brilliant guy anyway, we had a right laugh today though he was ever wary of my wife beating him (a long, Facebook story...!!!), we got loads done.

I'm hoping an update next weekend will say I'm finished and just got to sort an MOT date!

Well, got some more done this weekend.

Went to Mikes on Saturday morning for him to do a couple of welding jobs. What a top guy Mike is by the way  ;-)up

First up was heater tubes onto the exhaust. Should help get rid of this carb icing problem.

Next job was a little idea I've had lined up for a bit. I picked up a really, really nice 5 & 3/4" Carello spotlight from VZi for £4 delivered about 6-8 months ago. There was only one picture of it but I figured at £4, it was well worth it. Well, it turned up and apart from needing a new bulb, it was in awesome condition.

So I set about finding another to match. Turned out to be easier saipd than done. Seems they are pretty rare. Looks like they came off some exotic 70's Italian metal (Lambo, maserati etc) or maybe a Porsche 911 of the same era from what I've found. Anyhow, aside from a set on US eBay @ £590 or a pair on the samba @ $120, I've not been able to find another pair or even a single. Until last week, when these came up on eBay...

£30, buy it now. Seller stressed to me that one was shot chrome wise but was rather surprised when I said it was no bother as I had a spare  ;D At this point, I had decided I was going to run them so I took my bumper to Mikes with an idea.

Mike welded on two tabs to my bumper to mount them. Given they are a very slim unit, they fit onto the bumper very nicely and don't foul the bonnet.

Really, really happy with that. Next job was consider the wiring. Now I didn't want it on show and I think stuff looks rubbish cable tied on, so I though about how I could hide it.

Internally was the answer. I set about drilling out the mounting bolt. Started with a 2.5mm pilot and opened it out to 4mm to fit the cable...

You can see that I've counter sunk it with a 6mm bit. I'll explain that in a minute... There was a cracking opportunity to run the wires internally through the bumper, so a hole drilled, wire fed through and grommit inserted.

Then I had another thought. The edges of the holes on the mounting bolt would be sharp too..... The grommits need a 6mm mounting hole, hence my 6mm counter sink. A trim of a grommit to this..

So, all the wiring will be pretty much hidden from view, I've got a lovely pair of spots (well, will have when these eBay ones get delivered today!!)

Got a few other jobs done Sunday with Muz. Exhaust back on. Fuel tank cleaned up and painted again. Was going to refit it but the fibre washer on the outlet is knackered. Sorted out a trailing arm in the front beam that wasn't far enough on for the grub screw to sit in the dimples on the leaves. Also painted my handbrake and gear shift linkage cover plate.

Also did some work on adapting my stainless wiper arms to fit the vw spindles. Had to order some nuts and bolts so pics once done.

Bought a load of wire and a relay to power the spots. Having spoken with Chad and confirmed what I though, I'm running a feed from the battery through to the fuse box. From there it goes into a relay and then out the other side to the spots. A feed from one of the main beam wires to the head lights will act as the switching wire for the relay so the spots only come on with the main beam.

Placed an order with Limebug as well for a few shiney bits. Another wing mirror and screen clamp for the other side, as well as a set of valve caps and some number plate bolts. They should be here today too.

Well, got quite a lot done today.

Was out with work last night. Had a right hangover this morning which was annoying considering I didn't drink much and was in bed by midnight.......must be getting old.....

Anyway, lounged about until about 12 then got the buggy out. First job was to figure out what was wrong with the indicators. I had a good idea it was the multi plug connector to the hazard switch as I'd been having a few issues with this and had noticed that the black/grn/white wire pin was suspect too and this is the one connection common with indicators and the hazards. I'd ordered a new plug so rewired it with fresh wires (and to be honest, the joints were much better on this one as I'd learnt how do to them) and then spliced it into the loom. Hooray, indicators again. That was a right result.

Next job was to put in all the wiring and circuitry for the spots. A main power from the rear into the last spare point on the fuse box. From there into the correct point on a SPNO relay. Out of the relay with two wires down to the front beam. Add the earth, then sort the switching feed by spurring off one of the main beam wires. Job done. This needed doing as once the bonnet is on, Ive no intention of taking it off  ;D

Next job was the wiper arms. I've got a set of stainless mini wiper arms. Some mods later and they fit the spindles. Next was to shorten them to make them the right length and also sit where I wanted. I don't like wipers that sit in the middle of the screen And no-one makes arms so was a case of make my own (thanks to some advice from someone!!) Selection of M2 and M3 bolts and some dome M3 nuts and normal M2 nuts, a few metal drill bits and off we go. Drill out the rivets, figure out arm length and position , redrill some more holes and remake spring fixing ends, cur to length, bend where required and you get this....

So, very very nearly there now. Took the opportunity to see what the front end would look like with the bumper and spots fitted....

Haven't got a pic of that uploaded to photo bucket and its in my phone which is on charge upstairs.....I'll post it in a bit!!

I also mocked up some brackets for the front bumper. Seems a shame to have weld on steel brackets for a lovely stainless bumper. Still tweaking the design and then I'll get my old man to CAD it up and get it off to the people who can laser cut my design and see where we go from there.

Pics just uploading. The wind wings were made by a company called B&K engineering in California. Bill, the 'b' part of B&K, died late 2011 and the company closed as far as I'm aware. I managed to get the ex display set from Berrien Buggy and they were the last ones they had. I've seen one set in eBay in the last two years and I think they went for getting on for $300..... :o

They fit to the screen using the standard Manx screen clamps. You can get these from Lime bug and such like for about £12 I think. The real stuff you pay for in the B&K kit is the hinge mechanism. Its a lovely piece of machining.

You could probably make your own, it wouldn't be too hard though matching the engineering on the hinges would be a real toughie...

Yep, exactly that Paul. The hinge is one solid piece of Ali, machined and then polished.

My dad is gonna try and CAD them up because if he can, I'm gonna see if I can get a few made. That's a while off though.

I wouldnt mind a tinted set of glass or even acrylic like my fly screen is at the moment, but with a slight blueish tint to match the buggy.

Steve, I'll bear that in mind. You can have whatever glass you would want I'd think. Auto glass can cut pretty much any size/shape you'd want and if they don't have the colour you want, you could get some tint film and stick it on.

Last bits should be finished tomorrow. All that's left is check and correct the spot light wiring, attach screen to bonnet and bonnet to body. Bolt the heater pipe flanges to the flanges on the exhaust and I'm done. Completely. MOT time baby

Well,

Had another good crack this afternoon.

Spot light wiring corrected. Not entirely sure what was wrong, looks like the flying lead from the main beam to switch the relay was the issue. I remade the lead then tested continuity from the battery through the fuse box, basically all the connections. All seemed good so back on with the bonnet, reconnect the wiring and test. First test didn't go to plan. Spots no worky......untill I realised the wiring running through the bumper wasn't connect to the bulbs...... ::) Anyhow, a couple of tests later and an earth to the bumper (H1 bulbs suck) and all was good. Result.

The above took a while. Needed to be sure it was all good as once the bonnet is on, its not coming off.

Next was mount the screen. Wife assisted with the pushing down and whilst its not too bad, I'm not massively happy with it but it will do for now. Bolts done up and job done. Didn't have any double sided tape at this point to do the wing beading so packed up at this point, just as the curry arrived. I also got the inside hoovered and the floorpan wiped down, along with the inside of the body. Got to be clean for the MOT man!

All that is left to do tomorrow is fit the bonnet properly with the wing beading and its ready.

Well, a week in and what a hoot!!!!

Done 150 miles so far. Driven to work and back twice this week but the weather wasnt good enough for anymore.

Couple more jobs done. Went over to see Farmer Rob yesterday and we had a play with the carb main jets. Was fitted with a 125 main which appears to be right for a 1300. Tested out a 122.5 and a 120 but settled on the 122.5. Buggy flies now.

Went over to see Steve (Lovebug) this morning. Absolutely top guy with an awesome buggy which was one of my inspirations to pick up a rear seat.

Needs retrimming to match my front seats but its great and fits like a glove. Was made by Steve himself too. Daughter insisted on modelling it..... ::)

 ;-)up Coolio  ;-)up they're making a carpet for my transmission tunnel, I was going for a full carpet set but got hold of some heavy duty rubber mat foc from a mate so covered the floor pans in that just needed to smarten up the tunnel may even go for a full carpet set at a later date

Not updated this for a while, been too busy enjoying it! Covered nearly 700 miles now. Engine due an oil change and i need to get another piece of glass cut for the wind wings. Rear seat yet to be trimmed and ive got a couple of other bits and mods planned. Still need to get some shiney wheel nuts!  ::) First mod is tyres. Rears need to be a little taller and the fronts a little narrower and lesser in the sidewall profile.

Anyways, a few pics from the weekend. I think it looks really nice. Im so happy with the colour.

Got fed up of bare floor pans and they have become a bit scratched and scraped where my feet have been, stones, etc.

Got some heavy duty rubber matting, the sort they put down in kids play areas etc. Trimmed to fit and it's made a heck of a difference....

Latest little project, a 5 panel wink mirror. Picked up very cheaply. Only problem was it came in a nasty cream colour. An hour of careful masking and trimming and it was ready for primer.

And then promptly had a debate with East Coast Rob and Manx David about the pros and cons of 594's over 488's.....both Rob and David thinking they look like nipples....

I shall find a pair of clear 488 lenses and see if I like the difference. I still need to get something done with that rear view mirror too. Busy trying to find another 1200 rear light base so I can have the pair chromed. Whilst very nice, I'm not paying the £170 a certain retailer wants for a pair....

The biggest set back is that ist was going in for a full roof to be made the day after Stoneleigh. This has now been put back a month due to the trimmer being inundated with contract work....frustrated but I know the best things come to those who wait. Now booked in for the second week in June sometime unless he can fit me in earlier.

Next stage of the buggy puzzle purchased!!

Been thinking about a solution to some of the wind buffeting you can experience in a buggy. I personally find it quite a tiring thing, and, given its a long drive to Holland, I've been considering some ways of reducing it.

A few years ago, I owned a very, very nice BMW 328 cabriolet. The wind deflector which I had in it was brilliant.......which got me thinking.....

I considered making one my self. Bonus being you could make it the exact size and shape you wanted.......downside being, you try and find the very fine mesh material that is used in the construction of them. I was only able to find a repair panel from somewhere in Germany.

So, I started looking at what is available out there.....many hours trawling eBay, looking, asking questions on dimensions etc. I eventually found one that would be the right dimensions for what I need. Its not perfect but its bloody close. The gaps appear to be there as its only loosely in position

The fixings pins on the sides are spring loaded....they slide back just far enough to clear the sides of the buggy. Another result..

Took it for a test drive tonight and it does make a difference. There is still some air movement into the passenger area from the sides but it is quite reduced....

Get to Robs with Muxpz and get cracking.  Removed the engine cage, cracked off the hub nuts with my 3/4" breaker bar and 6ft scaffold pole (was dreading this bit as shaggy did them up!!!!) but came off very easily.

Fit the new box back into the buggy. Muz has to go home at this point. I hook up the gear shift rod and test. Two gears. Sh!te. Try again. Same two gears. Scratched my head for a fair while, decided something wasn't right and pulled the box back out and onto the bench again. I could pull the hockey stick in and out to get two gears but it wouldn't rotate to select between first/second, third/fourth or reverse. Eventually I decided to poull the nose cone. Immediately it was apparent the hockey stick was bent. Due to the bend, it wouldn't change between the selector shafts. Fitted with the fact Rob commented about a burr on the end of it, its clearly been dropped, not by me. Twenty mins of gentle bending and testing and eventually icpve got a selector that works. Clean off the old gasket, refit the new, refit the nosecone and figure out how to fit a fully built up gearbox and heavy ass Porsche starter in your own. By now it was hot and I was in a tin roofed shed. I swore as much as I sweated....,,eventually, I got the gearbox back in. It only just fits, only just. The Porsche starter is a fair bit longer than the VW one and I didn't think think it was going to clear the battery box. It does, literally by a millimetre or two....

So I've still some spannering to do. Shocks need refitting, drums and hub nuts, handbrake cables, fuel pump and filter king and I need to sort the wiring change from dynamo and voltage regulator to internally regulated alternator....then we can fit the engine. There will be a little work to do on the throttle linkage then......

Did a bit more today, though had a hangover and the wife was moaning about me being out again so didn't do much.

Got there and Rob was moving the engine!!

Once we got that on the dolly in the barn, I carried on. Handbrake all connected back up. Those clips that hold the cables are one of the worst pieces of design, ever. Brake lines back in and drums and hubnuts back on.

Removed the voltage regulator and wiring for the dynamo, wont be needing those any more....replaced the gearbox earth strap and then Rob and I offered the engine up to check for clearance etc. It suddenly looks a lot bigger, a LOT bigger.....should be OK on clearance but the air cleaner units are gonna be close.....

Didn't do any more as we were trying to get to the bottom of my clutch slip issues. It looks for all the world now as though the issue is the clutch cable conduit out of the back of the chassis being too long. The Bowden tube has too much bend and is restricting the movement of the cable. We took the Bowden tube off and measured it, its right. So I'm just trying to find out how much should stick out of the back of the chassis. Looks like we are gonna have to remove the stainless storage box and go in with the hacksaw....any clutch issues are just going to be amplified by this new engine....

Never goes to plan does it.....

Indeed it is Keith. A moment I've been waiting for for a while....

So for the 5th day running, I was over at Robs again tonight. First job was fit the CB heavy duty rear mounts. Duely done after a little wrestling, jacking and 'persuading'....

Next job was tighten the hub nuts. Braced the drums and managed to get them pretty tight indeed considering no wheels were fitted to the rear. I then filled up the gearbox with almost 3 ltrs of EP 80/90......hasn't leaked yet!

With the gearbox all sorted, the storage stainless box went back in. A little more fettling on the wiring and that's now complete as it can be for now.

I then attempted to fit the engine properly. It wouldn't go the last inch or so and I couldn't figure out why. A good look round revealed the tinwear on the nearside rear of the engine was fouling on the gearbox mount....some work with the dremmel and it fitted.......

So I finally have a Corvair engined buggy. Not powered (that's tomorrow night) but its in........

Anyways, back tonight for hopefully the last part....

I have to fit the fuel pump, although I'm not sure where to do it. Its a pusher pump apparently but mounting it under the fuel tank is going to be an arse. Very tempted to mount it at the back and let the gravity feed from the tank do the pushing...then I've got the Filterking to mount and then hook up the fuel supply to the engine and wire in the pump.

Wiring at the reader to connect up, brakes to bleed, wheels to fit, hub nuts to torque up, split pins to fit and switch on the ignition and hope it doesn't go bang...,,,,

So, tonight......

Battery box had to come out so I could remove the starter. School boy error meant I'd forgotten to put in the half moon bolt in before bolting up the starter. Wouldn't go in, and with the Porsche starter being tight up against the battery box, it was either removed the engine/gearbox or the battery box......there aint no way the box and engine is coming out again, so battery box it was. Only took 15 mins in the end....

Then bolted up the engine properly and got it locked into place. Its big..........!

Once that was done, I had to run a cable from the battery to the B+ on the alternator and then connect the coil, alternator light wire, oil pressure wire and hook all the cables I needed up to the +ve of the battery.  The clock clicked back into life and no magic smoke escaped. All good so far....

So we turned the ignition key. Bit of a non event really. Oil and Genny lights came on, again, no magic smoke....another turn of the key and the porsche starter does its thing and kicks over the engine. Oil pressure light goes out, all good!!!! Rather bloody pleased considering all the wiring changes!

At this point, I decide to see if the engine cage fits. Almost fell over when it slipped back on with no issue.....

At this point, I was pretty tired and, despite me wanting to get done, I called it a day. I don't have to do the school run tomorrow so I'll head over to robs straight after work and attempt to get finished......

In tonight's espisode of Ben tries to fit a Corvair engine to his buggy........

Well, tonight was eventful....got to Robs early as no school run today and cracked on. Pulled the engine as I was sure the flywheel was catching something in the gearbox. It wasn't.....next job, fit the fuel pump. It had to go up front but I was adamant I wasn't pulling the screen/bonnet......eventually after a LOT of faffing about, I got the pump mounted and the fuel.piping plumbed in. I then put the engine back in, or at least tried but she was being a pain in the arse and wouldn't go. Got it in eventually...

Filled up with fuel, primed the system, checked for no leaks once under pressure, then hit the switch.....a few revolutions and a prod of the throttle and she barked into life......oil pressure light out very very quickly (while still cranking) and genny light out too. All good. Checked all the gears and my backwards gearbox has been built to perfection!!!

Ran out of time at this point to do any more. Tomorrow's jobs are bleed the brakes, fit the wheels, and test drive!!

I owe an enormous amount of gratitude to Farmer Rob. Without his help, knowledge, expertise and general support, I wouldn't be where I am today. Couldn't have done it without him, so he is as much to thank for me getting this far as anyone. Thanks so much for the help Rob, it is massively appreciated.

Anyway, update.....

Got over to Robs this morning nice and early, just in time for it to start raining. Properly raining. Joy.

Rob was already busy sorting the brakes which were pretty much done by the time I got there. Next job was to remove the Filterking pressure regulator as the engine really didn't seem happy with it. I suspect its not set properly and appeared to be leaning out the engine. Removed it and replumbed the fuel lines. Wheels back on and it was off the axle stands for the first time in over a week. Hub nuts torqued up and split pins fitted. A fair few other little jobs including sorting an earth for the rear lights, refitting the engine cage, checking all bolts for tightness and generally having a tidy up. Whilst I was tidying, rob fitted the muffler inserts with a pair of set screws.

Once that was done, we were finished. Stood back, had a look, looked at the rain still pouring down so drove it around the barn.its going to be a very quick buggy I think once its running properly....

The extra engine weight has sat the back end down nicely now. Just need to swap tyres to 275/60/15 and we will be away....the best part is though the engine has transformed the back end. It, in my opinion, makes it look a whole heap better and just sort of fills it out....

And yes, all the chromosexuals out there, I know the engine and shiney bits are filthy. Its been in a barn for a week, plus the track out of the barn and the road out of robs were bloody awful after the amount of rain we've had here in the last 2 days!!!!!!

I think I've solved the issues with the wiring. I'm going to run it all internally through the engine cage and then pop it out where I need to. All the connection are on the edge of the engine anyway, so will work well I think and keep the wiring completely hidden.

I've left Rob this afternoon playing with the carbs. Putting much bigger jets in and seeing what that does.

I'm very much trying to get it to the MBC meet on thursday, it just depends if Rob and I can get this fuelling issue resolved.

Lastly, for the the support and encouragement I've had from you guys over the last year or so, thank you. You've kept me going at times when I felt like chucking in the towel.....messgaed me, called me, posted here etc.......all very much appreciated.

So,

The update you've all (well, maybe not all) have been waiting for.

Got the text from Rob this afternoon saying he'd sorted the issue with the fuelling and with the carb that appeared to have the blocked idle circuit. We were out for dinner and god did that make it drag!!

Anyhow, after yet another biblical downpour, the wife took me over to Robs to pick up the buggy at about 4pm. There wasn't much fuel in the buggy so I took a 5 litre can of super unleaded with me. Rob had also told me she was filthy, properly filthy. Given the track from the barn to the road was a mud track and then the road round by Robs farm not a great deal of cop, I knew it wasn't going to be pretty given the amount of rain that fell yesterday morning and today... ::)

So I got there and Rob explained what he'd done and stuff and I saw just how filthy it was. Big Clem and Krug, you won't want to look at the pics....that aside, we were ready for the journey home...I trundled down the track, round the side round and got to the main road...

The first 500 yards I was showered with all the mud coming off the tyres...that was mildly amusing....after that it was much better and I could start to think about the driving experience...

The first thing you notice is that cruising on part throttle is a fair bit quieter than my old engine. The Corvair is running a similar cannon type affair with a set of muffler inserts. My old cannons had silencers built in. The other thing you notice its its willingness to head for the horizon with the merest hint of throttle. The torque on this thing is amazing...the last thing is the sound. Oh my goodness. Its the most amazing sounding engine I've ever heard......

So I got it home and then spent the next two hours cleaning off all the mud....its mostly gone!!!!

Once clean I took it out for a decent run along some of the dual carriageways locally where I could stretch its legs a little more. A judicious prod of the throttle appeared to induce some kind of warp drive.... :D The thing grips, barks, and goes for the horizon very, very quickly. Tonight I've been faster in my buggy than I've ever been before and got there in half the time. The speedo sweeps round so fast its not worth watching!!

I have two problems. One is a noisy nsr wheel bearing. Frustrating as its new but I suspect its picked up some crap. Easy fixed though.

The other is not so easily fixed. Project gearbox has just been spawned. First gear is over in less than a couple of seconds, literally. Forth runs out of revs far too quickly. I need another gearbox!!!

All said and done, I'm absolutely over the moon though. A fabulous upgrade. Will be at the MBC meet with it Thursday all being well

Somehow I imagined the engine hanging out the end more, but am pleasantly surprised the proportions of it. And yes can only imagine the power of that thing.

Congratulations Ben, I've been watching your thread for quite a while, the engine looks the nuts and really suits the buggy. I'm looking forward to seeing a video or two! Before you go changing gearboxes it may be worth looking into larger diameter rear tyres, effectively adjusting your final gear ratio.

When I saw the first photo taken at Robs I did think that it needed something between the engine and the space in the body above. But the more I see it the more I like it , I do wonder what it would look like with a chrome standard air cleaner on it like the one on the Thomas Crown buggy? But what ever you decide to do is ok with me because I just love it  ;-)up

Firstly, yes, I am hugely pleased with it. It looks just right and once I tidy the wiring, it will look even better.

As for the gap, yes, there is a plan....! I do like the look of the air cleaner on the Thomas Crown buggy, and although that one is specific to the 140hp engine they used, there is a very similar one for the 110. However, its a 3 piece set up, I can only find 2 of the parts chromed, they are $110 for the pair plus whatever shipping etc. Bear in mind I paid $150 for the fdan plate, valve covers and air cleaners. I'm not sure how good it would look on a sidewinder either. It fills the gap on a Manx perfectly, just not sure on mine....

So, the air cleaner units I got are 61-63 units. There is a cross pipe with an intake horn on it which I can get in chrome. I really like the look of it...

Been out and got a few more miles under the belt today. Gave it a full tank of juice as I'm gonna go to work in it tomorrow and then have a prom run and the MBC meet Thursday....

Well, over 200 miles done now. It desperately needs longer legs. Drinks like a bloody fish too, suspect that's down to the gearing though.....having said all of that, it's ace. Smooth and lots and lots of torque......and then there is the sound.... :D

I definitely need another gearbox. Changing up the tyres will make some difference but not enough so I need a longer box....the motorway wasn't the nicest place to be last night. Caught between those horrible places of 'I'm running it in' and 'I want to go faster...'

So how is it going ? Having to much fun to post an up date and is it run in yet 8)

Short story is, it isn't.....Am on holiday in France at the moment but last Thursday I got it out to nip to the shops and have a blast before going away and the oil pressure light won't go off at idle. Off as soon as you rev it a bit but not at idle. Really pee'd off to be honest. I'd been out in it on the Tuesday night, all was fine. Then this.

Not sure what the problem is yet, we are hoping it's a dodgy pressure switch. A few Corvair owners in the states have had the same issue and it turned out to be the switch. Rob doesn't think it's anything serious at the mo. It's not knocking or burning oil or doing anything odd so we will see what a new switch does. It's got between 200 & 300 miles on it now and it's been running fine. I think the jets in it are a little on the large side as it's drinking fuel (15mpg....!) but I'd much rather run it rich whilst we are running it in.

It most certainly is a hoot. Very quick, sounds great etc.....

I hope it's just the switch it sounds like it is enjoy your holiday ;-)up

Tentatively, I'm back in the game......

Found a UK stockists of a 1/8 npt oil pressure switch. Switches at 5 psi instead of 4 but better that way round. Big thanks to Manxdavid for the link to CBS who had one....

Ordered it yesterday, was here today. Got home this afternoon and have just fitted it. No more oil light at idle.....let it get properly warm etc, still all good. Test drive tomorrow but hoping it was a duff switch......

bet you cant wait for bedtime to come round....just like you used to be when you were a kid  ;-)up

Yeah, fuse was down to a short in one of the bulb holders in the rear lights. Swapped that out and all is good. Fuel leak is odd. It smells of fuel but there isn't any sign of a leak.......bit odd really.

Gearbox is a bargain. Came from that Derek guy in Shepshed. Muz picked it up for me last night.

Clearly the fuel gauge has been out or messed with before. The needle is a little bent and I'm not sure it should sit where it does....

I need to figure out what the three lights on this gauge are. Suspect one is oil, one is generator or alternator and the other a lights on telltale...

Think the lamps were...(top to bottom).....main beam oil and generator. Been a very long time since I saw them in a motor.

judging by the colour, top indicator, center oil and bottom charging.
you will have to test the fuel to see if the needle has dropped back or gone over full once free off the shell the buggy sender should be fine to do it

Well, tach restored and tested, works fine, very pleased with that.

Light at the bottom of the tach is the main beam indicator. Working on the fuel/temp gauge now... That appears to have a single red light (gonna either be oil or generator) a green one (head lights on I think) and a yellow one......that's gonna get swapped out for a red one to make up the other one I need.

So, into restoring g the combined fuel / oil temp gauge. Hopefully sorting out a piece of glass at the weekend, using the Speedo glass as a template as they are the same size.

Got onto the thoughts about warning/info lights. The Type 3 pod is very good, has lights for everything I need. The Porsche stuff us a little different. The tach has the indicator tell tales and the main beam light. The fuel/oil temp pod has a green headlights on light, a red one (oil pressure I think...) and a yellow one I've no idea what it's for!!!

So lights are simply holes with a bit of coloured plastic taped over the back. Decided I wanted proper modern battery and oil symbols. Looked at the Speedo in the wife's mini and realised it has small round perfectly sized symbols....queue me booting up eBay and looking for a cheap mini Speedo to butcher!!

Most were £20-£40.....I found one for 99p buy it now, with free postage.....

The plan is to replace the red and yellow film with the bits from the mini Speedo, giving me proper battery and oil lights.....

So the uber cheap mini Speedo arrived!!! Only to be butchered!!

After a bit of cutting out, one cut thumb, and a session with the Mrs's emery board, I finally got the oil light symbol grafted in.....needs just a tiny amount of filling work but pretty pleased with that.....

Whilst the gauges had coloured sections which I'm sure meant something, I don't think you can beat good symbols. Worth the effort to get them in I think.....

Have pretty much figured them all out now. Should make  Chads life rewiring it a bit easier after Christmas!!

Dave, definitely doesn't have a sidelights symbol, not in the main Speedo fascia anyway.....

The main beam is a small blue light at the bottom of the tach.  I kinda like it and for all the use it will get, I'm not to fussed about changing it!

Could you not use a battery symbol in there? for the genny light? or a standard double arrow symbol for the indicators flashing? Loving the work so far.

Well, not really done too much more. I'm having issues with the speedo and the combined oil temp/fuel gauge pod. Both need either parts or repair, neither of which are cheap......and that's if I could find any spares...

Since pulling her out of the garage yesterday, I've been thinking about what else to do with my buggy. To be honest, it's taken a bit of a back seat to the 306 of late, although the weather's not exactly been Buggy weather.

I need to get the AS gearbox finished and installed. I also need to get my old tyres off and over to Wrinkly Ninja and buy some 275/60/15's. That should take care of the gearing and make it a nicer, less revvy drive. I need to strip and repaint the driver's side spring plate as it's still all wrinkly from where the tekaloid reacted with the lacquer I put on it. Did the passenger side last year.

Want a pair of the Flatlands stainless end caps for the rear beam. Also still have the Porsche gauges to put in but I'll need a new fuel tank, sender, sump for the Corvair engine, oil temp sender for the gauge etc....that's gonna take a while. Have some material to make a roof as well so hopefully get underway with that soon....

After that, and between being a hooligan and driving it, I don't know.....

Still tucked up in the garage. Still not mot'd nor insured. Couple of big bills of late that have sucked up any spare cash. Still, the best things come to those who wait.....

Still have the gearbox to rebuild and fit. That will be a weekend job for some point later this year before the weather turns..

So, decided I need to do something with the torsion bar end caps. The cheap Chinese chrome ones I've got are just pants and I've not got the money to go spending at Flatlands.

I got a pair of Porsche 944 caps from Hazel. In std guise, they won't fit.....Well, they might but have a big chunk you don't need...

The bit going back towards the shock tower is staying. Been talking with a knowledgeable guy over on VZi. Apparently they can be joined to the shock tower to give a little more rigidity. Will look into that later, probably when I fit the new gear box. In the mean time, Ive a little more fine detail filing to do and then need to polish them up......

Cutting work all done. Some shaping work started. Next step is to get them bolted together back to back (I'll need a spare at the arms are angled back slightly then take them to the engineers near my mates tyre unit and have them mill the cut surface so they are identical and the same.

Then they need rubbing back with some fine wet and dry to remove the the casting finish and a few casting marks and then sweet talk Muzzy into either polishing them up or letting me borrow his polishing thing so I can do it....

I still haven't done any more to this.......having said that, my mojo that went awol for a fair while is mostly back now so I really need to stop playing with old Peugeots and get this sorted.

I still have this AS code gearbox in the garage to fit. I need to finish getting the parts cleaned up and get it all back together. The more I look at the case, the more I think green was perhaps the wrong colour for it. I shall have a look at painting it a different colour now. I need to fire up the electrolysis cleaning tank (read dustbin full of water....) and get the rusty bits derusted and painted. New seals and bearings and we should be good to go, I hope!

Still want new rear tyres, still want type 3 brakes and still want a set of polished slot mags. Need to be wide at the rear and skinny up front. Did know a guy with a pair of 4.5" beetle pattern rims but he sold them on the beetle. He is trying to get in touch with who he sold it to. New wheels will mean new brakes though as the blank discs and drums i had drilled and studded will go with the Centerlines if i decide to sell them. Looks like i might have to import the Slotmags to find the wide and the skinny im after....

Need a new fuel tank so I can fit a type 3 sender so I can really see just how quickly this vair drinks fuel (although I know that already....)

Then I need to get the hood made. Have the material and metal strip,just need someone with annindustrial sewing machine. So many things I want to do, so little cash right now. Need a new bathroom in the house, got a new job which probably means I'll need to change the Mondeo daily for a diesel (looking at an M-Sport 530d)

Are you set on the slot mags? As there is a pair of very nice 8.5 centerlines on vzi at the moment for sensible money. They always look cracking on a buggy IMO

Been a long, long time since I updated this properly. Been a long time, for a number of reasons, since I've had the enthusiasm to really think about it. But, I'm back.

Today's plans were to pull her out and sort her out....then saw a Facebook post on a group from someone offering free appliance collection....got a dead Freezer and tumble drier in the garage so it turned into an impromptu garage tidying session. Buggy had a flat battery anyhow so stuck it on charge and cracked on with the garage. You know when you wish you'd never started something? Still, I got all the 306 parts that had been living in the buggy put away properly.

Anyhow, by about 4pm, I'm just about done and the heavens opened. Arse in hands I went inside. Came back out later tonight and the battery was charged. Turned over and over, wouldn't start. Had popped the fuse on the coil circuit and realised I'd drained the tank down when I put it away last time. D'oh. Fuse and fuel, off she went. Lifters went quiet pretty quickly and idled OK. Good.

Checked all the electrics. I know I've some work to do for the drivers side rear light and number plate light so no surprise they didn't work. Indicators and hazards all fine. Front sides and dipped OK. No driver's side main or spots. Bugger. Swapped bulbs side to side, problem remained. A wiring issue then. Pulled all the fuses for the lights to check. One wasn't great. Bit of emery paper on all the contacts and back in, hey presto. All the front lights work. Put her away feeling pleased with myself...

So, to do.....

Fixing the rear light wiring
Fit new stud and sort new nut for the front passenger side wheel
Fit the Porsche arms
Sort the steering wheel and horn out (need a new grant boss kit I think)
Get MOT'd, taxed and insured
Order some new carb jets, oil filter and spare fan belt from the states
Find some unions and a jucntion block and replace the soft fuel lines with hard lines I've bent up
Get the fuelling sorted on the rolling road in Northampton
New rear tyres 275/60/15
Get the AS code gearbox built and fitted.
Sort the wind wing glass out and sort out a little idea I have for them
Think about weather gear
Drive the bloody thing!

I'm sure there will be more to do but I'm definitely planning on getting out and about plenty in it this year. Have asked Chad if he has any space to do a proper wiring job on it at the end of this year. Never been properly happy with some of the wiring and then the change to alternator when the Vair engine went in added some more which needs sorting properly.

Time is pushed at the mo. Working out near Worcester now and have been working weekends for the last 3 weeks and the next one at least as I've two abroad stag dos in two consectutive weekends in May to pay for.....

It definitely needs the engine servicing and setting up before I do anything. Needs the oil and filter and dropping and then the fuelling sorting. 12mpg isn't fun. Ever. So I need to sort a rolling road session with someone old enough to remember carbs.....

Yeah, not good. So, it got cleaned from top to bottom. Washed, rinsed, dried, glass cleaned, chrome/stainless polished then got busy stripping down the carbs. Last time it ran it was rough as a badgers arse on idle one one bank. This will be why.....Float bowl contents. .

Not a clue what it is as i run two filters between tank and carbs but got a good clean out and found a blocked idle jet on the driver's side bank. Cleaned out, took the opportunity to polish the fan shroud whilst the cards were off...

Whilst it was off, i could see the extra work done to the carbs by the guy who built them, even down to knife edging the bits that sit in the airflow...

The carb bodies have been what looks to be smoothed and flowed to aid air flow too....

It's been 2 years since this saw the road. Variety of reasons, some of which a couple of you know about so I hope you'll understand. Life is much improved these days. Still not without challenge and not so good days but no meds and generally better feel about life and the future.

Which brings me nicely to my buggy. Other than my daughter, I think this will be the one thing in life I'll always be proud of, and no matter what, it will always be there. Two years she's waited patiently until I've been ready to enjoy it again. It's been a while, with a few false starts, but I'm ready.

So, on lighter note......I spent two very enjoyable hours twirling spanners Friday night, whilst the wife was out and the daughter was playing out with her friends where I could see her, putting the suspension, subframe and wheels back onto the Rallye and lifting it off the axle stands and getting it back onto 4 wheels. I even figured out how to reconnect the steering rack which turned out to be so simple I felt rather stupid for not figuring it out before. Far easier to steer a car with the steering wheel than trying to steer the wheels by hand as you are pushing it.

Sunday morning the sun was shining.....tidied the garden ready for friends round for a BBQ late afternoon and then wheeled the Rallye up the drive. Gave it a quick wash and parked it on the lawn. Wife wasn't best pleased. Oh well. Quick brew and then rolled the buggy out of the garage. Battery had been flat before but 24 hours on charge should have sorted that. Rolled the buggy back into the sun and reconnected the battery.

Today was all about recommissioning and benchmarking the state of it for MOT. With the battery connected, two turns of the ignition switch and the oil/battery light came on. Fuel pump whirred into life. Signs were good. A number of pumps of the throttle linkage to fill the float bowls and then a further turn of the key. Within less than a second, she sparked into life, chugging a couple of times until she grumbled away at idle as she always did. Brilliant.

Let it run for a bit and warm up. She's never entirely happy from cold as the choke linkages have been taken off (not really needed on a buggy) and without the vac tube connected from the dizzy, (long story involving me stripping carbs to clean them, then forgetting to reconnect the vac tube and burning it on the exhaust so it's now too short...) timing gets a bit off as you increase the revs as the vac advance isn't doing its thing...no biggy though. Lifters seem to have retained some pressure from when I started it in March as it didn't tap it fits off for 5 minutes after start up.

Turned it off and then moved onto checking all the lights and stuff. Connection on a spotlight needed cleaning was all the lights required. Needed some help to check the brake lights so asked the wife to jump in and press the brake pedal. 10s and nothing. 'Press the pedal' i said. 'I am' said the wife. 'Are you sure, I've got no brake lights' I queried. 'Yes' was the reply, followed by 'im pressing the pedal on the left'......... 'That being the clutch' I replied, drily.......'oh, I thought it was different in the buggy' came the response.......Lord, give me strength.

Once the correct pedal was pressed, the brake lights worked. Oh good. Indicators didn't want to play at first, was the plug to the stalk unit needed seating properly.

Only things that I know need doing are the horn wiring (had a new steering wheel last year), rear number plate light (a broken wire, 5 mins with the soldering iron will fix that) and the vac advance tube. Two or three hours at most.

Then I got busy cleaning. Had a wash not long ago so didn't wash again. Got the flex out, with a black pad and the S40. Polished and buffed off, then got a coat of OCD Nebula wax

A very quick road test to check the brake (end of the close and back) and all was good (bar the stuttering due to the vac tube). I'm off this week so hopefully MOTd, taxed and driving on the road by Saturday.

Going tonight a few shiny bits from Limebug/Flatlands to satisfy the chromosexual in me. Also need to get a service kit from the states and a pair of new carb jets from the guy who built my carbs. As much as I love that 6 pot lump, I just cannot life with 12mpg..... especially if I want to put some miles on it. Long story on that one but if you read my engine build thread, you'll see that we had an issue that had all the hallmarks of running lean, so drilled the jets out, only to later discover a it was a points plate issue throwing the timing out. Decided to leave the jets in whilst running it in as overfuelling and cooler running at that stage isn't a bad idea. She's run in now so when I get the new jets, it will then need taking somewhere for a rolling road set up as I think there is plenty more to come from this lump.

I on the other hand have only got worse to the point I am not able to hold a knife and fork properly and anything with a spoon is out of the question.
I now have my tremor all over my body.
Just been to see the neurologist and theres nothing they can do now as far as drugs go so the only thing next would be surgery (which I wouldnt look forward to)
So holding a spanner is out of the question and might have to sell the buggy as is as as I also might have to give up driving.

New carb jets from the states arrived this morning so I'm just about to fit those and drain the fuel system. New fuel filters ordered and on their way from M7 too.

New jets are in but she's not happy. I need to drain the entire fuel system, replace the filters and refill.

Bit annoyed really. Never had an issue with water ingress before and I'm at a loss as to how it can have got it. The only thing I can think of is perhaps it's got past the fuel.filler when I've washed it..... I suspect it might need retiming now the right jets are in there and generally a good setting up.

Just need to find somewhere now...most places these days are remap specialists.....with no idea what a carburettor is!

There's a good place at Wimpole near Royston, but that might be a bit far for you

This is all very interesting, engines dont normally need a re-jet, least of all off the shelf and in the mail.

Has your Corvair always been running rich ? as this should have affected the general performance and make racket backfiring
I would have thought.

A rolling road would be the best place to go I spect and jets should be fitted that enable the engine to run as it was designed,
I know I have mentioned it elsewhere, but getting some heat into your air boxes would also be a huge benefit with this.

Long story. The guy who built my carbs did so with the other mods id done in mind (overbore on cylinders, hotter cam, exhausts etc) and fitted what should be standard size jets for a 110 Corvair engine (#53's).

Now, when we built the engine, we had issues with it running on anything other than idle. As soon as it came off idle, it gave all the symptoms of being lean, so Rob drilled out the jets a bit at a time in an effort to resolve. It eventually ran better, although not perfect. Rob then discovered a loose connection on the points plate, which was pretty much making (or letting?) it give full advance at just off idle, hence the appearance of being lean. Sorted than and it ran great although by now the jets had been enlarged somewhat. I sourced a new set of original size jets.

It's been rich as long as it's been running although we decided to leave it this way whilst we ran it in as it would run cooler. It did pop and bang on the overrun somewhat......

The Corvair engine doesn't suffer with carb icing at all so there is no need to run extra heat to them. The intake sits over the engine which warms it anyway.

It does now need fine tuning on a rolling road by someone who knows what they are doing. David Knight at Knight Engine Services who did some of the work on it for me have recommended somewhere reasonably close to me.

The other alternative is to buy and fit and EFi kit.......

There's usually a waiting list but yes see Peter Baldwin at wimpole near Royston. Highly highly recommended (the chap Gordon mentioned above)   Many of us been there and worked wonders.

Hiya Ben, good to hear you have got it on the road ;-)up ;-)up The water has no doubt come from condensation in your tank due to it not being used. The timing should not of moved! As it started, the points have not oxidised. They often need a clean after a car has been left standing. If it is not happy now, perhaps I got the jet sizes right ;D ;D ;D Where has Dave Knight suggested you take it? I would have recommended taking it to Northants motor sports but then you might end up with more power than mine :D :D :D

Not very pretty at all. Lots of bits of jelly which is what I keep finding in the idle jets. Two new fuel filters be here tomorrow. I'll drain the lot and refill. When it's not struggling with the jelly/water, it seems to run ok although I haven't tried it on the road with the new jets yet.

David has recommended Advanced Motorsport Engineering down near Silverstone.

Well they claim to know their stuff, I hope their prices are not too high! I saw Dave Night a couple of weeks ago, it was great for him to tell me his treatment seems to have gone well :) :)

The trouble with rolling roads is that they only test full throttle settings! they can do the emission tests at tick-over but if your vehicle has not got an engine management system; they can not set part throttle settings by the computers. They have to do this by trail and error on the open road and then this is of course down to the skill of the technician. Any way, let us know how you get on ;-)up

Right, bloody filters didn't arrive so haven't drained the fuel. Thought better of the quick drive up to M7, thinking they be delivered today....how wrong was i?

Anyway, dug.out the copper pipe reel I had and finished up the templates for the hard line I need to make. I want to replace as much of the soft hose as possible. The Corvair was hard lined as std but the std pipes are a completely different shape to what I need. I bought two more of the fittings and I'm just sourcing a 3 way brass junction block from the states which will then be all the hardware I need. Just need to get some proper pipe (either Kunifer or stainless) and have it shaped and flared and I'll be good to go with that.

Then decided to try and make a start on a roof. I've had a piece of steel in the garage for a while for this job. Approx 10mm wide, 3mm thick and 1.1m long. Using a blow torch to hear it and mole grips to bend to shape, I finally got it to fit into the recess in the screen.

So it looks like it will work. I need to measure it all out properly and the metal.rod will be stocked and glued into the front of the canvas. The canvas was also filthy so got a wash too. Looks much cleaner and I'm.just trying to get the creases to drop out...

You mentioned jelly in the fuel, that is probably a result of bacteria munching on the ethanol in modern fuel, that can be a major problem if fuel is left standing, particularly if the fuel level is low as the air above it has come in from outside and the more air the more chance of bacteria.

That is why places with emergency standby generators cannot use biofuel as it just sits there waiting for an emergency and when you need it there are globs of mush in it.

Ben after all this time you will need to strip the carbs and blast cleaner down every orifice and drilling preferably backwards if you can or fill them with cleaner on the bench let it soak then empty and blow it all out. This fuel will gel on the drillings and posrts.

Thanks Keith, I think I will do just that. The new filters have arrived so as long as I can get some decent meds for this bloody trapped nerve in my shoulder, I should be able to crack on with getting the carbs off, the filters changed and the tank drained.

Pepsi, the plan at the moment is to try and make a bikini type top. I don't have the skills or equipment to be making side panels. The plan is I'll get the canvas cut roughly to shape and the metal rod will hold it at the front and a pair of adjustable straps (like rucksack straps) will hold it at the rear and allow for tensioning.

Right, filters changed although there was no water/jelly in those at all. I'm wondering if I managed to let the carbs get wet in some of the rain and water got into the float bowls? Still, the wife has just picked up some carb cleaner for me while she was out so going to pull them off again, clean them out and go from there.

Finally got all the bits on route for the hard fuel lines conversion. These little buggers took a bit of tracking down this side of the pond....

And got a brass distribution block off the 140hp engine coming from the states and have just ordered a roll of 1/4" of Kunifer.

Two questions. Can Kunifer be chrome plated? How much in terms of length of pipe would it take to do a double inverted flare?

I believe "Kunifer" is a 90/10 copper nickel alloy- so yes it could be chromed plated- but why- just use stainless steel..

Because stainless is an absolute arse to try and bend! I cant imagine flaring it would be much fun either!

Drained down the system. Didn't find any water in the fuel out of the tank. Replaced the filters (I've got two, one front, one rear) and they were clear of water/jelly.

The only odd bit about them is that the main jet sits in the bottom of the float bowl and is a pain to change as you have to have the carb apart to do so....

So once apart, I blew through all the channels, jets etc. Then half filled the carb with cleaner and let it sit for a while. More so to make sure I got rid of all the jelly that had been blocking the idle jets. I still couldn't figure out where the water was coming from as once back in the engine, they are connected to an intake system which pretty much seals them up. However, on the Corvair carbs, the hard lines have a union which screws into a bigger union. Behind this sits another filter. So I decided to have these off and just check. Bingo.

Pretty sure this is where the water has been getting in. These got cleaned out, the filters scrubbed clean and put back together, making sure I did them up tight.

Then had a brew. Then spent half an hour refitting the carbs and linkage and nipped out to the petrol station to get a couple of gallons of petrol.

Filled the float bowls and she started up straight away. It definitely needs setting up properly now but I'm happier I've sorted the fuel system.

Anyways, that was the key to it all. Roll of Cunifer came yesterday and with a day off today, I got busy (once I'd sorted the wife's car, attended a father's day thing at my daughter's school and then picked her up from school an hour later.... ) Bent up the pipe, remembered to put the union's on, the right way, before double inverted flaring the pipe. End result after having to redesign the right hand side feed due to the air cleaner housing being in the way, was this....

The std Corvair engine had all solid fuel.lines from the factory but I couldn't use off the shelf ones as I don't run a Corvair fuel pump and my pipe routing is all different. End result is I've gone from about 2' of fuel hose to about 4". The rest is now solid lines. Much happier not having that much hose over the engine.

Fitted it all, tightened up all the union's and pipe clips and got the wife to turn on the ignition. Not a single leak which I'm well happy about given the flared ends aren't the easiest to do......started up and ran perfectly. Already for the weekend now!

End result fitted......looks far less exciting!

Thanks guys. Bending it up by hand was a bit difficult but very pleased with the end result. Some of the bends were a complete pain to do as they bent round corners and through vertical/horizontal angles either at the same time.or very close. Considering they were all.done by hand I'm pleased.

With the new jets in, she seems to be running cleaner. Certainly doesn't smell as rich. Some serious test driving this weekend will give me an idea of where I'm at with things.....

Sunburnt, windswept, hot and tired. Today, I remembered some of the reasons I built a buggy.

Cruising along the open country roads, nothing to worry about apart from which way to turn next, being able to properly switch off mentally, other than buggy related things. The reactions of people you meet. Looks of astonishment, smiles, waves, kids shouting hello and pointing at you whilst tugging at a parents limb, the people waiting by it to talk to you when you do a quick run to the local supermarket.

As well as the mental switch off, it's the reaction from others. if I can bring a smile to someone's face, spend 20 mins talking to an old boy who has a history of VWs but also an engineering background and talking about the engine that's 'clearly not a vw and has 6 cylinders but I don't know what it is'..... Not to mention the cars that pull up along side at junctions or on a dual carriageway which when you look across are either looking longingly, taking pics or shooting a video.

I'm not an attention whore in the slightest. The buggy however, most definitely is. I'm happy to be able to show her off.what a great day

End of an Era part 1, and perhaps the beginning of part 2.

Today, the Corvair engine and i parted company. A day with a lot of similarities to the day we made each others aquaintance properly.....in a barn, on the Leicestershire/Northamptonshire border, hot as hell......

The deal on the engine was done 8 days ago. Deposit left and buyer arranged to collect today. Worked well as i was working from home due to a potential buggy buyer coming to look at the buggy.

Took the buggy to Robs saturday morning. Potential buyer came to look at it this morning (left the engine in so i could take him for a test drive)...test drive done, buyer very impressed, time to remove the engine and gearbox. Rob waa a huge help. Engine came out very easily, box didnt put up too much of a fight either.

The box was sold with the engine. We all know my track record with diff flips. No chance i was doing another. By 3pm ish, my buggy looked like this:

Have an engine and gearbox ready to go in. Just need to source an exhaust. Potential buyer loved the buggy. Just need to get it MOTd and let him know.

I would send a photo of the Corvair engine to Ralph Nader over in the States. He would probably have sleepless nights knowing one still existed and it was in a buggy.   ;D ;D   (How a man could take such exception to a Corvair & then Beetles and then ending up with the status he now has is beyond me).

I think his issue was the fact (like many other americans) he was unfamiliar with the traits of a swing axle suspension set up.

It shouldnt really have come as any surpise that in a country with lots of long straight roads and big heavy cars with rear leaf springs that a change to swing axle suspension, added to barrelling into a corner and then suddenly lifting off was never, ever going to end particularly well.

An interesting point to note is that the Corvair, i think, is the only car ever to have been deemed legally 'safe' by the courts. Circa 64/65, Chevy changed the rear end suspension to IRS which much improved the handling. The Corvair was actually supposed to be a very good car. Unfortunately, Nader and his rent-a-gob had already done too much damage to the Corvair reputation and production ceased after only 9 years, in 1969. Shame really.

Time to close the door on this one.

With the Corvair engine gone, and gearbox with it, i sourced a new engine from Rob (a 1600 Single port) and, along with another AB code (diff untouched for the potential comedians, of which several frequent here...), we got it all installed and running well. A little later than scheduled but done. Buyer had sent me a sizeable deposit and arranged collection of the buggy. Tomorrow she goes for MOT and all being well (bloody should be after sourcing and correcting the mileage on a new speedo, fixing a tail light bulb and a couple of other bits), will be collected this weekend. One final clean this afternoon in readiness for MOT. She looked as good as she ever did. Teasing me i think.

As i have said though, she had become an expensive garage ornament. A buggy needs to be used, out in the sunshine, by the sea, which is exactly where this one is going. Not fair to keep her locked away and unused. If im honest with myself, i think the fun for me was in the building of it.

She came a long, long way from that chassis i picked up from Manxdavid, on a saturday morning sometime in 2011 think it was. Through running out of fuel, getting baptised, backwards diffs, engine swaps, silly fuel economy, id like to think i did something a little different and amused you all. I learned an awful lot and enjoyed it.

Ive certainly met some great people via the MBC and buggy scene as a wider concern. I wont name names, ill only miss someone. Ill still be around, if anyone need advice on a Corvair or a gearbox which probably has more place in an Italian tank than a buggy......

So, MOT was booked this morning. Drove there pretty much perfectly, although clutch slipping a little in 3rd and 4th.

Brake test had literally just finished when the tester said 'oh, that felt odd' referring to something he'd felt through the brake pedal. With the brakes off, the passenger side rear was showing 90kg of brake force... managed to back it off but suspect the cylinder to be the issue as the handbrake is still fine.

Home at the mo, just having a brew, then heading back over to robs.

Brake cylinder on that side was siezed. Must have moved enough to pass the brake test, then moved some more with the pedal pressure from the test and stayed stuck...

Pistons removed, cleaned up, replaced, bled. All good.

Clutch we think was down to a pressure plate gone weak. New clutch and pressure plate installed,  and she flies along. Done 70 odd miles in her today.
