Me again..... This weeks thicko question...... :D
After snapping my clutch cable last weekend, I have a new cable and have read what the manuals have to say about renewing clutch cables... Now..... The manuals say that to change a cable the pedal set needs to be dismantled and removed from the car.... Is this strictly true or can it be done without ??
Anyone got any advice tips or tricks ?. :o
At the very least you need to slacken off all the pedals so you can get a finger or two into the hole on the left of the tunnel to hook the cable onto the pedal another person to move the pedal is a must. However you need small hands and fingers to do it, even with the pedal assembly fully released and partly pulled out it is not that easy.
I know a man with small hands that did one with pedals loosened on the jas during the NEWS cruise 2015 when ours snapped but it was still 1.5 hours of fiddeling in a hole working blind.
Something I do that helps a huge amount when 're-engaging' the hook
and the eye is to let the clutch pedal fall back onto the floor towards the seats,
and then lift it back up to engage the hook 'into' the cable eye, rather than trying to
fit the eye to the hook......
If you know what I mean! ???
When you hook the cable end onto the hook secure it on with a couple of thin cable zip ties to save it coming off as you jiggle it in place.
Dont be tempted to do what I've seen many times and cut a big access hole in the tunnel, you'll seriously weaken it that way. Not too bad on a full bodied Beetle but possibly disastrous on a buggy.

This is driving me crackers !! Pedal set is loose in the tunnel and all good so far but there's no way I can get my fingers into the hole in the tunnel to get at the cable or find the end of the tube...
How the hell do you take the pedal set out ?
I have disconnected everything and taken the circlip off of the accelerator end of the tube and according to Haynes the brake and clutch pedal parts should slide off???
The end of the tube looks to have 2 flats which dangerously suggests that it turns with a spanner?
Someone please put me out of my misery and save what's left of my knuckles.......
You need to remove the brake push rod and the 2 bolts by the pedal + the tunnel r/h side plate the pedals will pull roght and swing back allowing fingers into the left side.

It's amazing how 40 years of crap makes things stick together..... ;D
All it needed was a smack with a hammer and bolt and it flew out,
Also I have learned that if you have a short wheelbase buggy and therefore won't be using the threaded end, cut it back by 3/4 of an inch makes it a doddle to get in the tunnel and into the tube.. ;)
So... Pedal set out... New cable in (with patented beachbuggyinfo cable tie round the hook) ;-)up pedal rods and tubes cleaned and copper greased, reassembled and back in the tub.....
Too dark and too much in need of beer and medical attention to do anymore today so the next step will be Bowden tube etc at the arse end and hopefully just adjust everything up... ;-)(-;
