Hi
I tried to fit a cigarette lighter today and it burnt out all the leads ! Please can any one advice where to take my feed and what units others have used
Thank you
You ideally need a battery live that has a fuse in the line to the lighter of around 2amps. No idea how yours is wired but look on the fuse box or light switch for the large red wires.
Ignition switched or aux live fed ones are ok but to charge stuff you then need the ignition key in.
A multi meter or test light will be invaluable as folks use any colour wire for anything and so earths are not always brown or black as not all lives will be red.
Prefect thank you . i was looking to go from battery and use a switch to control on and off ! guess that would be to much power? thanks
A lot of people fit a kill switch that removes power to everything. Dont really see the need for a switch on socket, if something is plugged into it then its on, nothing plugged in then its off. If you intend to run something from it permanently then wire that in through a switch instead.
as Snoops says, fuses are essential
All the best
dave
There is a bad batch of cig lighter sockets out there that have been put together wrong.
Make sure that the 1 you have is not just causing a short circuit.

I`ll second that - we`ve seen a few down here in cars for diagnosis - turned out to be faulty sockets
