Title: Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital and VWNW 6th and 7th August 2016
Post by: Krug on March 25, 2016, 11:44:15 AM
Just got the link through to book the club stand for VWNW  so I though we should start this thread

6th August Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital (RMCH)

If you have not been before its just a great way of making some poorly children happy.  We drive to the hospital in the morning around 11 ish and let the poorly kids have rides in our buggies around the grounds of the hospital.  We have a short cruise into Manchester at lunch and then back to the hospital until about 4.   Great way of making the kids happy and we raise money for charity at the same time.   As many as can make it welcome.  All very informal and just a nice day out.

VWNW Tatton Park

In my opinion the best VW Show in the North - we have a club stand which I have booked that is for a max of 10 buggies (RMCH also come on our stand).  These are allocated on a first come first serve basis by me - so put your names on here and the first 10 get the places.     You can also enter the show if you want your buggy to be judged but the booking for this is not open yet.   Watch here for more details http://www.vwnw.co.uk/

So we love a list and to kick it off and so I can allocate the club stand places

Evening, I'll be more than happy to join you on the hospital run again this year. As this was the very first buggy event I attended and had a brilliant day seeing all the other buggys and meeting some wonderful people. Let's hope that the rain hold off this year.  ;-)up

Tony, is there a B & B local to you where we can stay on the Saturday night?

I have been looking ...... the problem is parking and local up here as you know can be a bit of a run.   There is a Premier Inn just one the big round a bout at the end of the motorway
http://www.premierinn.com/gb/en/hotels/england/greater-manchester/manchester/manchester-hyde.html

Personally I wouldnt stay there not because of the hotel .... its the area and the car park is not safe for buggies.

There is one in Denton - its not the best location being next to a car show room but its off the main road and the car park should be much better
http://www.premierinn.com/gb/en/search.html?searchModel.searchTerm=Denton&cid=KNC_Gen%7C_G_UK_UK_Eng_Enc_LO_Manchester_EX&mckv=sMcNKYYHT_dc%7Cpcrid%7C66122095609%7Ckword%7Cdenton%20hotels%7Cmatch%7Ce%7Cplid%7C&gclid=CIiompqsvM0CFZEy0wodNOAHmQ

If you want something more quaint and traditional
http://www.queens-arms-hotel-old-glossop.co.uk/

Old Glossop is 10 to 15 mins from me .... if you get there on the Friday its a nice town to walk around .... quite small but a few nice places and lots of pubs / places to eat

Someone also told me about AirB&B and this place https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/1735467?checkin=05-08-2016&checkout=07-08-2016&guests=2&s=vgl3Xhu0   This is 5 mins from me but dont know if they have car parking .... I can try and drive round at the weekend

And I notice this one https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/9026323?checkin=05-08-2016&checkout=07-08-2016&guests=2&s=9i8LEfUq

And this one https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/12977010?checkin=05-08-2016&checkout=07-08-2016&guests=2&s=84HGZtSc

Seems AirB&B could come up with some more .... for example put in Knutsford ( which is the closes town to VWNW Tatton) https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/12100195?checkin=05-08-2016&checkout=07-08-2016&guests=2&s=9KOuSTIu

I am also hoping to see someone this weekend who has a holiday cottage in the village (or at least get a number for it).  I have no idea of cost but I know everyone who stays there loves it (and you could always park at my house).

So a few to be going on with and I will keep looking

I should have added...... I am also trying to work out if my kids are staying that weekend - if they dont I will have space .... but trying to get an answer from them is like getting blood out of a stone...  I think 2 of them plan to stay ......the 3rd and unknown is Amy ..... so in the hands of a woman and her decision making!!! Well not long now and for anyone thinking of joining.....

Background

0n the 6th August we take our buggies to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital to make as many poorly children smile as we can.   This happens in a few ways:

1. If the kids are well enough we give them short rides around the grounds
2. If the kids are really poorly they can just look at the buggies and have pictures taken with them
3. If the kids are too sick to come outside (typically the burns unit falls into this category) the can look from the windows and see the buggies and of course hear (and feel) the noise we make.

Making poorly kids smile is our number 1 priority and kids can make amazing progress with their challenges when stimulated and happy.  I know from personal experience having spent several months in the hospital with my daughter who broke her neck (and wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for this hospital) that kids get so bored and just lack stimulation when in hospital (especially long term)

The plan is to arrive around 10:30 - 11:00.   We then stay until 12:30 is and break off for a cruise.  This allows the hospital to feed the kids.    It also allows us to have a bit of fun as we go straight into the centre of Manchester on a Saturday at Lunchtime (peak shopping time).  The cruise is an event as getting through all the traffic lights and Saturday traffic can be an epic event.   But its not really about the cruise.  Its about getting noticed and raising awareness for RMCH.   We normally have flags that we can fasten to the buggies and if the weather is good the RMCH Mascot will also ride with us (if the weather is good  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D  Its Manchester!!! ).  In the past this has got us on the local TV News, the local radio and the local press.

We get back to the hospital in 45 mins to 1 hour.  Then we stay and let the kids enjoy until you are ready to depart (very low key and no fixed times).  We tend to leave on mass about 4:30 if we are still there and if the weather hasn't been too bad to us.

The hospital has a large canopy area that we can park under - which helps if it rains a lot.

Please be aware if you attend when you park we must put card board under the buggies just in case of oil leaks.   This is simply because the hospital would be charged if we make stains on the floor and we obviously dont want poorly kids slipping in oil.  I will bring cardboard for all the buggies.

I have convinced a mate who is a hobby photographer to come along again (well didnt take much convincing as he really enjoyed it last time) so we have a good record of the event.

We can still accommodate more at the hospital if you want to come (even if its in your daily).... but VWNW the following day is fully booked now.

Quick update from the Organisers / Police

"Due to congestion at Mereheath Lane gate the Police have asked us to ensure that all club cars display their passes prominently and to remind you that no entry will be allowed at Mereheath Lane without a pass.   Please try to have the correct payment ready to ease congestion.  £7.50 per adult.  Accompanied children free"

So I will be handing out the passes at RMCH.   If you cant make it send me your address and I will post it. Passes this year are the type that hook over your rear view mirror...... if you havent got a rear view mirror you will have to come up with a clever way of displaying  :D ;D :D ;D :D ;D

I think everyone is scattered all over the place Hazel.   Shaggy at Davyds, Allan and Vanessa near Knutsford,  Dave at my house ..... let me double check with my kids again to see who is staying at my house (they never confirm until the last min) ..... worst case you can always camp iin the garden

Yep, think we get there about 11.
Turn up say hello, drink tea, talk crap, have a laugh
Take some poorly kids out, make them happy, least for the day.
Generally quite a humbling day, well I find it like that. But it's a good one.

Tony will be along soon I would imagine to give much better / more useful info.

. Yep just turn up. We meet at eleven....go for a cruise at twelve thirty and back around 1.30.   You can stay as long as you want. We tend to leave no later than 4.30.  On the day will give you more info as there are h and s rules as we are on hospital property.  We only take the kids on rides in the hospital ground and its ten mph speed limit.....but we still have fun...... Hope you can make it

Massive thank you to all that came.  Hard to put in words just what this means.  This year I think we had some very poorly children (more than in the past) and to see their faces smiling was just amazing.   You are all super stars!

What happens now ..... the hospital will give me feedback in a few days as they get time to talk to the children.  They will add up all the money raised (Angela indicated we have done really well (an a massive thanks to Shaggy and thanks to Dave who sold parts and donated the money to charity)) and I will post on here exactly how much.

I set the date now for next year ......its easy as VWNW is always the first weekend in August and we do it the day before ..... so it will be Sat 5th August 2017 at the hospital and Sunday 6th August 2017 at VWNW.  If you think you want to come next year just make a note of the dates.

I need to get my planning head on early.... I think the idea of trying to get somewhere we all can stay is back on the cards given what people have said so I will start some investigations in the next couple of weeks.

And I now need to find some time to fix a couple of niggles on the buggy as next weekend its "PIER PRESSURE" for me  :D ;-)up :D ;-)up :D ;-)up as I will be joining Chad and George on Saturday along with Dave!

Sorry I couldn't stay longer or be around Sunday as that looked like a great lineup in a nice spot.

Next year I'll be up for th eweekedn for sure.

Keep up the good work.
