Title: N.E.W.S. 2016 July 8th/9th/10th (a chilled buggy weekend in the middle)
Post by: Hazel on September 14, 2015, 09:24:27 PM
The event where the North, East, West and South get together in the Middle.
N.E.W.S. is a chilled out beach buggy oriented weekend to bring like-minded people from around the UK to camp, cruise and undoubtedly get a little silly.

Date: 8/9/10th July 2016
Location: The Gate Hangs High, Banbury

Well behaved pets are most welcome.

The Venue
The Gate Hangs High is a homely pub with a campsite situated in Hook Norton near Banbury and Chipping Norton. The cruise hopes to include sites though Chipping Norton, Banbury and beyond.
Prices are cheap, at only £10 tent and £15 electric hook up for both the Friday and Saturday night together.
All the hooks ups are already provisionally accounted for - TBC.

Commemorative Stickers
Currently, I'm unsure whether to arrange for any commemorative stickers to remember the weekend by this year as interest in them seemed to be lower than previous years- so maybe we can find another way to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society? If you could like a sticker, please say and if you have any suggestions of other ways to raise some money for the charity, again, please say...

The Cruise - Saturday
I think we'll aim to set of at 11am from the pub on the Saturday to do our cruise around Banbury and the surrounding area. It won't be as long as last year... If you want to come along on the cruise you are more than welcome but please let me know so I know roughly how many buggies to count for. There will of course be a photo stop or two to line up all the buggies. It was suggested, last year that we got a shot outside of the Brewery, but that would need to be on the Friday really.

Breakfasts, meals & Curry/BBQ night - Saturday night
The pub are happy to cook up breakfasts each morning, and it is useful if you could let the guys at the pub know a number the night before. It is beneficial to book a table. If you would like another (cheaper alternative to the main menu) curry night, that can be arranged. A BBQ is another possibility but it's really up to you guys.

Hook Norton Brewery Tour - Friday
Last year we had our own exclusive tour around the Hook Norton Brewer which we can do again if popular enough. On Friday the tour times are 11.00am and 2.00pm, but everyone has their commitments and may not be able to get there that early - so if we have a group of 10 or more people, we can have a later tour to ourselves. Also if you arrive early enough you'll see the Shire horses delivering Hooky beer to the pub for us!

Open Tap Take Over - Thursday night
On the second Thursday of the month, at the Hook Norton Brewery they have an Open Tap Takeover which is a free event, to go along and have a chat with the brewers, try new beer from Crafty Ales and remind yourself of the traditional Hooky favourites - so if anyone did want to take advantage of this and stay and extra night it would be an additional £5 for camping.

Other activities on the Thursday

If you did want to get their a day early and pitch up to take advantage of the open tap take over - I guess we'll need to organise some fun and games to keep ourselves amused on the Thursday - suggestions?

No problem there, assuming I haven't written it off by then (of which sadly the chances are very very high!) then it will be there for sure! Even if I have to use that unmentionable hairdressers car.... I'm there!  ;D

Also (I've asked on the Facebook page already) is there anyone here that would still like a NEWS2016 commemorative sticker?

Yes of course, the whole site including inside the pub is pet friendly as long as they don't cause trouble with other pets that are around...

Apart from those who have let me know already, does anyone else actually want a commemorative sticker for this year? As with every NEWS, the proceeds will go to the charity 'Alzheimer's Society'.

This year is set to be yellow (as you may have seen in the banner) and I'm now thinking of going with the new buggy design I used for the GB patches (with a few extra finishing touches, like the windscreen colour and shading)  - along with the usual NEWS 2016 across the front.
Ultimately, it's up to you. It's your event! So tell me what you want!

OOh! Thats a tough one Hazel.

Whilst I like the continuity of the old style, and they all look good stuck together with different years and colours, I also really like your new design too

Sorry, I`m going to have to sit on the fence for this one    :-\

Hoping to make it this year for camping but just cant commit at this time due to Ruth's ongoing monitoring etc and not knowing dates that far ahead.

As for the list! am I right in thinking the following are camping at NEWS2016?
Lawson & Jayson
Jazzy & Snowy
Snoopy & Vicky
Dan
Fran
Andy R
Karl W
Dave Dream
Shaggy & family
Dave DND
Douglas
Merscury
DoonL001
Hudge
Muzzy
Farmer Rob & family

However those in italics are yet to make a payment? Forgive me if I'm wrong, let me know if you have and I'll go back and check.

And wanting stickers, I have the following down
Lawson
Andy R
Jazzy x3
Fran x4
Chad
Snoopy
DoonL1001
Muzzy
Supergrimmer

Only a month to go folks! I need to get a cruise sorted and it's helpful to know how many will be on the convoy/how many stickers to have made up....
Also, will anyone be having a passenger seat going spare?

If you haven't seen already on Facebook, The Gate Hangs High are now running a "Classic car, bike, scooter, vehicle meet" on the second Sunday of the month starting in July (through to October, weather permitting) 10am till 1pm. So, yeah this'll coincide with our weekend but the classic cars will be coming to us for once

I know the pub has a restaurant but do people take food as well.  Is there anything else I desperately need to take ???

There are no plans for Friday as people generally can't get there too early but if you're at the pub before noon you'll see the Hooky beer delivered by the shire horses. If you'd like to take a tour around the brewery they do one at 2pm.
https://www.hooky.co.uk/visit-us/visitor-centre-and-tours.ashx

I'm tempted to take a trip down to Chipping Norton, a 10 min drive from Hook Norton, to explore a lil and maybe get dinner there instead of at the pub.

If anyone is thinking of getting breakfast at the pub, it's good to give the guys a heads up. I'm not going to take a list here, just be sure to let them now the day before to ensure they have the supplies. As for dinner, they're usually ok with that but if you want to make sure you get in, book - same goes for the Sunday if there is going to be a bit of a classic car meet in the car park they might be a bit busy.

Does anyone have a table booked for Saturday pm in the pub/should we all stop off somewhere else for food Saturday after cruise?

Cool!  ;-)up  Well I think we're going to try and set off about 11am, get petrol at the start of the cruise. Stop off for lunch (about half way round) then the photo stop shortly after and a stop on the way back as well.

I picked up the stickers this morning and I couldn't be happier with the way they've turned out. Remember all proceeds go to Alzheimer's Society  ;-)up

I still also have a few other bits and pieces from previous years. Patches are £5 each and as you can see are very limited! The MBC stickers come in white or black £3 each or 2 for £5. Everything else £2.

^^ what he said. And we'll get petrol a couple of miles into the cruise at GL56 9RE for anyone who is running late  8)  I'm only letting the late comers know in case we have any stragglers like last year, I don't think the petrol station was too keen on us parking up for that length of time.

If it helps and let's just say that I do make (even at this stage I'm making no assumptions lol ) I will have "find my friends" switched on my iPhone. So if you have an iPhone you can stalk and track us live. Have used it a few times on meets and can be quite useful track us down if we get lost etc.  Pm me if you want to add me.

Have sadly had something come up at last minute! :-[

These things always seem to happen.

Can't make it this time, there's always next year!

I've only worked one weekend in two years and now I'm doing this one and next weekend. :( so no NEWS for us this year.
Hope you all have a great time.
At least Dave will have a chance if there is a hill climb on the cruise ;D ;D

Just got home safe and sound

Brilliant weekend as always, great to meet some new faces and some old ones -

Cruise was superb - Hazel found some great scenery to take us through, and some really good stopping points - didn`t even know that there were such places as Lavender Farms, and judging by Millers Hayfever, I guessing he wished they were elsewhere. Saturday night quiz was pretty cool (bring torch next year) and some interesting cars started to turn up for the little car show as we were leaving.

Big thanks to Gary for allowing me to be a passenger, and mega thanks to Dave Doon for looking after Liz.

I only have one complaint, and I think many will share this one with me, in that it was all over too soon.

Thanks Hazel - that was a good one, and only 364 days until N.E.W.S. 2017   ;)

Once again we were on a trailer but taken to snoopys añd he has got us on the road again so a big thank you, and to Vicky for feeding us your both stars.I would like to thank the person who left a coil wraped in christmas paper on the buggy so now I have had two gifts from a mystery person, I WILL find out who you are    , Dave as seen on TV on the back of a trailer 3 times now in the magazine and at the NEC

A cracking weekend and relitavily buggy trouble free, the cruise went without a hitch.
Well done to Hazel and Miller for the organisation and quiz. Saturday nights challenges of pass the clap could have been a worry as we only had alcahol and no antibiotics but it reduced people to laughter as did Lizzie's pass the elephant and rhinoceros challenge.

Will get some pic onto the pc and upload them soon.

Unfortunately we were only there for the Saturday, had a great day and met some new friends, Thanks to Hazel and Miller. The engine is run-in now so I haven't got to just potter around anymore!

Echoing the others - Great weekend! Well done Hazel for organising a fantastic NEWS2016 Miller did a great job with the quiz on Friday night, (Just such a shame that Dave "not seen in the dark" Coleman and Dougie threw it away when I missed them for the last round! ;D )

Cruise could not have been better - great stops. And just the right length - more importantly well done of keeping us all together not a mean feet for a complete days driving!
Its the first time, I done NEWS at THE GATE, but again thought it was a great location - although there was no 4G for me - Come on Hazel, you know we can do without the net - sort it out!  ;) ;D ;D ;D.

Sorry I had to escape on Saturday evening - but see you all there again next year!  ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up
(Its going to take me that long to sort out all this footage!)

Nice one Keith.  ;-)up

Mean while have started to edit the footage here but it's going to take a while there's a lot to do, hopefully by the end of the week.  But don't get too excited about it. :)

As everyone has already said, great weekend.
Good camping, great beer, cracking breakfasts in the pub and great company

Never done a pub quiz in the dark, well done quizmaster Miller and how Hazel managed to mark the answers written in pencil in the dark who knows - well done both.
Great cruise as well, sorry about the oil smoke. Never had lavender tea or lavender ice cream before - much nicer than it sounds

Even the weather was kind with a dry and fairly warm cruise, Shaggy's forehead is the proof we had some sun

Hope I can get there next year

Interesting drive home, only gone a few miles and someone pulling out of their drive watching Hudge driving away almost got me head on, still proved my brakes work.
Then on the M1 all three lanes busy and doing 64 in the inside lane (checked the GPS when it happened) and was undertaken by a Range Rover on the hard shoulder  :o

true... though to be fair I've added a little vignette so looks darker than it was. i should have really turned it more blue shouldn't I?

No, going out with the sky like that is what separates the beach buggyists from the people that just possess a beach buggy  ;-)(-;

Hello boys and girls! Sorry I've been quiet since getting back, I got hit with a stinking cold as soon as I got back on Sunday and to be honest I never know what to say to all of your messages of thanks - other than thank you!! I wouldn't do it without you.  ;D

Cheers for posting your pictures, either here or up on Facebook, it's great to see more than just the buggy that's in my rear view mirror. Andy's video should be a good one too!

I'm glad you enjoyed the quiz as that was a last minute idea of Miller's to keep you all entertained. As for passing the clap (sorry about that) and introducing elephants and rhinoceros' to the 'room' (a what!?) hopefully that wasn't too silly for you grownups.

Everyone that purchased a sticker or two, thank you, together we collected £50 for the Alzheimer's Society. To those who disappeared early, I still have some left *nudge nudge, wink wink* Every little helps.

What else is there to say? Roll on NEWS2017

Errrrmmmm..... No pressure there then!  ???  ;)

Getting close to the end of the edit now, but serious, don't get high hopes, I'm only messing around with this stuff.   ;-)up

Ok, I've done it!

Now firstly don't get too excited with it. Its 13mins long so if you are going to watch it, get your cuppa ready first. To be honest the first bit with the drone in very low light goes on too long. And its quite hard trying to put all that footage into a video without a planned storyboard beforehand - I've only an amateur playing remember (and on a learning curve)

Many thanks to Shaggy for the additional footage used - will get your memory card in the post if you can pm me your address.

Try to watch it in HD (ideally 1080 60fps) if possible to see the quality of the recording and sorry for the cheesy music - again always a bit tricky getting something with the right permissions on youtube and really goes with it. (Any criticisms and advice going forward always welcomed).

Oh and finally, for those that were there, yes the clips aren't necessarily in chronological order, but hey thats how the edits goes sometimes  ;)

Cheers folks  ;-)up

RE: Bird songs - well very close. Yes the original sound (recorded at 5.30am) was very very similar but because the wind buffeting noise was occasionally there too I had to swap it with some library sound effects I had.  ;)

Yes Andy a really lovely production and makes the buggys and their owners all seem an attractive bunch. The lone police car looks like a sheep dog out trying to round up the errant sheep !

Hey Andy, I love your music change for the mundane task of filling up with fuel  :D :D :D And your bird sounds were a lot better than the pidgins and crows we actually got early in the morning  ;D ;D

No need for that, I'll find a campsite that welcomes (living) horses! It wasn't the same without you!

Although I do like a lasagne and I think by the sounds of things, Pam, DoonL001 and Fran could all be in competition with having the best ones, perhaps a cook off is needed...

. . . I really wish we'd filmed "pass the clap" so people knew how innocent it really is!  ;D  I think some people on Facebook are concerned about what goes on as these buggy camping weekends!  ;D
