Post by: sparky_lewy on July 12, 2015, 02:53:19 PM
I know ive posted here before about this but still after some sidepods for the buggy! Its currently being rubbed down after fibre glass repairs ready for paint and need to get some pods sorted so can all be sprayed at the same time! Im after the style of pod as the pic below!

I got my side pods from flatlands but I had to alter them a bit

Flatlands don't do any fibreglass moulding, they would have been moulded by East Coast Buggies.

Hey Buddy,

Is that a Predator Buggy?....  If so then i have a brand new unmarked pair of side pods still wrapped up in bubblewrap since they were made. They have been in storage whilst im working on my project.

if you know a good reliable fibreglasser who can use mine to make female moulds and produce a set from there then i'd be willing to help, as long as my sidepods don't get marked because i will be using them eventually.

Hey dude,

That would be awesome! I had speculation about what my buggy actually is so offering a pair up would help immensley and would be forever grateful! My next door neighbour is a fibre glasser so he is going to do them for me. Where abouts you based?

Hi, just to throw a spanner in the works, if your buggy is a Manx I don't think the Predator sidepods will fit. (The Manx & Predator do look similar)

I have a Predator and I am also after sidepods, couldn't find anyone making Predator specific pods so asked Mel Hubbard if Manx or Sidewinder pods would fit.  He said Manx pods would not fit a Predator, so in reverse, I would guess that Predator pods would not fit a Manx.

Manx side pods are available though, from East Coast Buggies

For my Predator I have ordered a pair of Sidewinder pods from Peter at Fibrecraft in Cambridge, hoping to pick them up within the next 10 days. As far as I can determine Sidewinder pods are virtually the same as Predator but wont be 100% sure until I offer them up.

Hey Sparky_Lewy,

Mercury is right, if your's is a Manx then the Predator or Sidewinder sidepods will need modifying to fit.

Im based in West London near Heathrow, drop me a PM.

Sparky's car is an early GP clone, Manx pods should be a near-enough fit.

So managed to get some side pods from rob at east coast (nice chap!) and manx are the ones!

Next job is to fit them... Anyone got any tricks or tips or secrets on what to do when it comes to fitting them?? Im thinking there needs to be a rubber strip of some sort along the top edge of the pods to stop it vibrating against the inside of the wings and side part of the tub??

John at Jas buggies glues them on with grip fill which I used along the top edge but I bolted the bottom to my strengthening box section around the pan edge.

I find gripfill a little bit too permanent, I've just fitted sidepods to my buggy. To prevent any creaking noises, on the back of the front and rear vertical edges where it will touch the tub I glued some strips of bicycle inner tube and on the front edge I used 2 bolts securing them through the tub. Underneath the outer edge of the chassis I put a thin strip of self adhesive foam, I replaced 3 of bolts that secure the body to chassis with longer ones so they could go through bottom edge of the side pods and made some stainless washer plates to spread the load on the underside of the pods. Along the top edge I masked off above and below, wedged open the gap with small pieces of wood then filled the gap with clear silicon sealant, removed the wedges and soothed right back so none of the sealant could be seen, removed the masking tape and then the next day I tecut off any residue that was left behind.  Don't know how others do it, I just basically made it up as I went along, but it worked, there're fitted, look neat and don't creak.

I would love to find a set of manta ray side pods , ... Am I ever likely to come across a set for sale?  Don't know how long ago they stopped making manta rays. Any info appreciated. Thanks

Manta Ray moulds were last in the hands of KMR in Birmingham but he was trying to sell them when I spoke to him last year as he was hoping to emigrate. May be worth a phone call.

Hi, have you spoken to Jim at Absolute VW, ? 07711004232, really helpful and has the mounds for several different buggies. He is in the process of making a pair of pods for my manta ray. Looking forward to getting them on and painted. Anyone fitted a pair of same ? Are they bonded or screwed on , ? , ;-)up

Strange, he told me he didn't have any buggy moulds. :-\

Jim at absolute Vw made some pods for my manta ray for 250 quid. Need a fair bit of Ferlinghetti to make fit so not sure if they are manta ray specific or buggy generic , I have nt used them yet , may consider selling them if I  decide not to fit.
