Title: IBW 2015 - Dilsen Stokkem, Belgium - 22nd to 25th May 2015
Post by: snoopy on December 02, 2014, 06:18:17 PM
The International Buggy Weekend (IBW) is being held this year in Dilsen Stokkem, Belgium

Not only a fantastic weekend of several hundred Buggies from around Europe, but for us lot from the UK, a truly epic Road Trip !
Newbies are most definately welcome here, and for a quick taste of what you can expect, take a look here at last years expedition:

http://www.beachbuggy.info/index.php/topic,5100.0.html

Most of us will be traveling in Convoy from various routes around the country (details to follow) with the aim of catching the overnight Ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, and then driving down to Belgium. Because its a Bank Holiday weekend, its very important to book the Ferry at your earliest opportunity, as its going to get very busy. Overnight Cabin is mandatory, and also gives us a nice rest.

Once you have booked your Ferry, you need to book your tickets for the event by sending Sabrina an email. There is also a "meal deal" option that covers breakfast and tea each day we are there - meaning you don`t have to worry about packing the Buggy with food (more space for Beer)

Come and join us for the trip of a lifetime !!

It depends how people want to travel from down your way but an overnight stay up here the day before would break the journey, I have not looked at direct  travel times to Harwich for you Southern crew but it is about 4 hours from here as you know.

Harwich from here is a pig and a bit due to that big ugly blob they call London in the way.

A few of us (Me, Ollie and Dai so far) are looking at the train on Thursday afternoon from Folkestone to Calais then drive for a bit the other side before overnighting in an F1 or Ibis.

That would leave a couple of hours the other side on Saturday to arrive nice and early. (Yea right!)

If any other Southerners want to tag along you're welcome.

Granted Flags, its a much better route for the Southerners, but it does have one major drawback . . . .

Just checked the return ferry for the monday hook of holland- harwich  night sailing has limited availability already but going out thursday night is ok.
May need a change of plan for the return as a convoy unless we get organised am  guessing the other means of crossing the channel will be busy being a bank holiday weekend.

if the crossing is a problem you can ask to stay for another day/ arrive a day early. very common to do so.
(and if needs be you can also stay at a campsite somewhere
for the ones traveling true hoek van Holland. id be delighted to help find a spot.)

Just had a chat with the captain (Dave DND) about doing something similar to the last IBW where we all meet on "the other side" and cruise together to the event.
So here are the details of the crossing that we from the north will be taking;

Route:   Hull to Zeebrugge
Departing:   Thu 21 May 2015 at 18:30
Arriving:   Fri 22 May 2015 at 08:45

It cost me about £183 with ferry direct for two people in one buggy. If you are interested i'd be happy to try and find a nice and scenic route to take rather than just go through the Brussels ring road wich is like the M25 on steroids.

Also, this may come as a bit of a surprise to most but we've booked one way tickets for next year's IBW as we'll be driving on to Sweden after the event. We've had a few family related events (I'll health mainly) that have tipped the balance and made us decide to relocate back to Sweden in 2015

So, we won't be driving back to Zebrugge with you after the IBW I'm afraid.. Having said that, we are really looking forward to catching up with everyone and repeating the success of the 2014 IBW trip. We also intend to keep with future IBWs and will just have a little further to drive 😉

Buggers -

Just been speaking with Chad, who has a bit of a workload on at the moment, and hasn`t had much time to negotiate sailings, so I have said that I would do this instead. I am just waiting back from the guys at Stena to see what deals can be done, and will let you know shortly.

There appear to be three groups moving about, and if anyone reading this fancies jumping in and joining us, you are more than welcome, in fact, you are positively encouraged to do so.

There is a group from the North, headed up by Aorange (Jon) who are catching the Hull to Zebrugge Ferry and then drive to Belgium

There is a group from the Midlands heading across the country for Harwich to arrive in the Hook of Holland and then drive to Belgium

And there is possibly a group (TBC) of Southerners who are crossing the channel at Dover and then driving to Belgium

If anyone down in the South West is interested in joining up with me in a convoy, I`m going to take the Harwich option, driving up to to the Midlands and then across the country, as it was such a good blast last  time - long journey though!

Hmm that's odd, I am sure there was a Harwich to Zeebrugge crossing but it doesn't seem to be available anymore.. or maybe I am imagining stuff.

I feel a bit of google mapping coming up to find a suitable meeting point for everyone  ::)

I bet the ferries still sail though, you would imagine they would have a near 24/7 back up staff.

So here are my own thoughts -

Last year we graciously got a discount amounting to around £10 off each way - not sure what we will get this year (if any) but I`m sure they may do something for us. A potential £20 saving is not to be sniffed at, however, I am mindful that the day after we are looking to return, the ferries are already indicating that they are near capacity, and we have a 2 week wait before we can make a deal.

So, do you guys want to wait 2 weeks and save £20, or shall I pick a ferry and some dates and start booking now whilst there are spaces?

Over to you ?

I thought the over night worked well, no rush there or back time to have a look around the dutch coast on the way back.
just looked at Harwich the sailing times are approx  the same as this years May 21st 11pm out and 25th 10pm return £294 with inner double cabin. I thought we paid around £220 this year but may be wrong.

I agree with Dave, I think we should start booking - it would be a real shame if we could not all get on together for the risk of saving £20

To make sure we are all on the same boat then, this is what I propose, and its pretty much as Snoopy has pointed out, as a re-run of last year

Sailing from Harwich to the Hook of Holland on the (on the Hollandica)
Departing Thursday 21st May 2015 at 23:00 Hours  and arriving  at 08:00 Hours on Friday 22nd May 2015

Cost £109 (Economy) + 2 Berth Inside Cabin £43

with a return journey of

Sailing from the Hook of Holland to Harwich on the (on the Britannica)
Departing Monday 25th May 2015 at 22:00 Hours  and arriving  at 06:30 Hours on Tuesday 26th May 2015

Cost £99 (Economy) + 2 Berth Inside Cabin £43

Total of £294.00 and can be booked here

http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry-to-holland

I have now booked   ;-)up

You'd be mistaken to think that :) Dav is suffering from the Stockholm syndrome (see what I did there?) and is practicing his hurdy gurdy already..

Truth is Dav is driving one of my buggies to the IBW and has kindly volunteered to help with the onward drive to Sweden. He'll then be flying back from Stockholm to Manchester.

Hi everyone, we obtained information last week that there were 300 spaces left on the ferry to the Hook of Holland but phoned up today on the intention of booking and spoke to a nicer lady who told me that there are 500 spaces going out and 800 coming back so I'm going to wait a bit longer and try for the discount because last year we paid £208 for 1 buggy and 2 adults, with cabin there and back. I'm going to send Paul at Stenna an e-mail to see what we can get this year but if it comes to no avail we will just book anyway. As Dave DND said it won't be until the 5th January until we know, but will keep checking on spaces in the meantime  ;-)up Can't wait!!!!!  ;D

Now whoever is going in their own in a buggy has to have a cabin. But I cant find anything where you can be
2 drivers in 2 motors and share a 2 berth.
Any ideas?

Dave,
Easiest way to do that one is not to book online, but to ring them up and speak with them - I did that last year when adding myself and a cabin to Chads booking

Seriously though, to all the usual people who go to IBW, spaces are indeed becoming tight, so book up as soon as you can, and let me know so I can add you to the list of those going.

For the Newbies out there, this is one hell of a trip and well worth coming along to - Its a fair old distance, granted, but its done at a real leisurely pace with great fun to be had along the way - so newbies, if you fancy tagging along, please do so, but don`t wait much longer else you may lose the space on the ferry

The MBC met up at Corley services just before 1pm we tagged on at the A46/M6 junction about 1pm then we had a stop on the A14 then stopped at another garage somewhere then onto Colchester Pizza hut before the final blast to the ferry.
As for the other side of the north sea I guess the first original meeting point will now be the wrong side of the river as we are heading south and need the A4 in what I think may be the benelux tunnel at 795M long :D :D :D :D ear plugs are advisory

Well after a lot of deliberating and juggling, it looks very much like I won't be joining you all this year in the end.  :( :'( :'(

Its just proving a little too difficult to sort out with Alex's school times and the inability to commit to booking the ferry in the next month or two.

But don't feel too bad as I am off skiing to Park City in Utah in early April instead for 10 days (which is eating up cash and my holiday allowance at work).  ;-)

Although never say never  (note: - must start playing the lotto  ;D ;D)...........

Have a great time all and I will be there in spirit (and I have not given up all hope of being there in the flesh yet either)......

Hook ferry port to IBW is 130 miles and 2H 15M on the directions sites mostly motorway driving, with the ferry docking at 8am we can have a very leisurely drive and perhaps a detour or two sight seeing and still arrive mid afternoon or to please Mr Dream we could do a few tunnel drives in both directions to kill time and annoy the locals.

hi Chad I hope you can come in someway or other. Chatting to Paul at Stena he was not that bothered about my passenger details at this point in time as I don't know who will be coming with me. Maybe you could call shotgun and go with someone. As it's a bank holiday it's only three days you need to take off. There's historically a lot of stomach bugs going around at he end of May!

Guys, don't get me wrong, I will if I can but looking unlikely at the moment.

Basically it comes down to me wanting the family to come, the difficulty in getting enough time to make it worthwhile (at the moment we couldn't arrive until Saturday afternoon at the earliest), having someone to look after our very old and frail dog, especially after using all our dog sitting credits up for USA in April, and importantly the cost. With Ruth still establishing her new business, we have to be a little more careful with cash at the moment that we used to(especially with the USA ski trip the month before ;))

But I'm sure you are all old and ugly enough to look after yourselves (but just look after Dave Dream for me  ;-)up) and I am sure you will have a great great time. (Gutted in truth but its really come down to a choice between 10 days skiing in Utah at Easter or 5 days buggying in Belgium at the moment)

colchester to harwich is just under an hour going steady, I reckon it was about 6pm and we left about 8 so ferry terminal around 9 but it is 7 months ago.

we also had a stop at the garage somewhere over towards colchester but I have no idea where, follow my leader mode! we just arrived.

harwich was 189 miles in 4 hours from here + 2 fuels stops and the food

Dai and Donna.
Ollie on his Jack but bunking with Crazy Dave.

We are all doing Harwich so Me and Ollie will be doing the southern loop of the M25 but Dai is coming from south Wales so anyone that could meet up with him on route would be welcomed (he don't travel well outside the Valleys)

Cruise route with stops nearly planned and will be posted shortly - I presume you can all manage 100 miles on a tank of fuel ?

If not, let me know, and I can modify route accordingly.

@Flags - Is Dai on here? As I`m going to be driving straight up the M5 and not that far from South Wales, he could join up with me before we meet the MBC crew and travel across the country together.  Also, if you can let me have your route, I can post it up in case some of the Southern crew want to join.

And at anyone else reading, this really is the trip of a lifetime (well 2015 anyway) taking in three (possibly 4) different countries on an epic cruise of Buggies and mates. Everybody is welcome, and don`t worry if you are new on here, we still want you to come along - but get that ferry booked quickly !!

Believe it or not, that route is not actually that much longer for me, as I`m on good roads all the way - its a few extra miles granted, but the time taken to travel is around the same, and on far nicer roads !!  Spent the last 20 years driving around the M25 and I`m pretty bored of sitting in traffic jams - would rather go a bit further and enjoy driving the Buggy, after all - thats what its for

Thats a kind offer Snoops - will certainly think on that one.

Just a quick update -

I`m chatting with our good mate Ruben from Holland at the moment to see if we can meet up when we dock and travel in together. If anyone has any suggestions, routes or thoughts, then please let me know - but at the moment, we are looking to travel mainly on the Dutch roads as Ruben is also towing a vehicle (which is not permitted in Belgium).

very little of the drive is in Belgium from what I can see on Via Michelin.

Hook on A20
Right A4 under the river
left A15
Right A16/E19
Left A58/E312
Right E312
Right A2/ E25
Right N273
into Belgium
N78 and we are there.

meeting with Ruben would not be a problem as there are quite a few service stations on route.

The Southern route of A16/A2 looks best to me. We can meet up with Jon & Co at The Shell Portland services between Junc 19 & 19A on the A15 after we cross the Nieuwe Maas.

@Snoopy

That route is pretty much the one I was looking at, looks good to me, and Ruben has also suggested Barendrecht as a meeting point for him which is around the A15/A29 area.

@Flags
You are aware that Johns Ferry is docking at Zebrugge this year aren`t you and not Holland ?

I guess that a meeting point could be arranged around the E34/E25 south of Eindhoven area, but may be a bit out of the way for him as it certainly doesn`t look the most direct route?

Would certainly be good if we could meet up with them as well though

@AOrange / Davydoff
Have you guys planned anything as yet route wise ?

A north south cruise meet on the way there means a major detour for either party. Will be easier on there home trip as I guess that Jon and party will head North.

In the words of the great Homer - Wise to resolve, and patient to perform.

Oh, wrong Homer, I meant - Trying is the first step towards failure, or just plain D'oh!

Once Jon has worked out his route and projected timings we may be able to meet at a Supermarket type thingy close to the campsite for supplies then drive in together?

well hello there 8) i sensed someone mentioned my name... ???

well the route suggested by dave dnd is the most sane.
its prudent to leave the Rotterdam area early on for traffic reasons.
morning rush hour is city inbound and usually mild on Friday, especially on a day like that.
but be fearful of Eidhoven and the A2 by mid day it will have some heavy traffic if we get past there 11 ish id think we'l be fine.
will monitor the radio for traffic, (unless anyone else wants to? ;) ) and adjust accordingly. its wise to leave the last leg open for changes.

for meeting the zebrugge crew there is the possibility to do breda turnhout geel and then the belgium a13, wont be way longer.
N roads are usually ~ 40 /50 mph witch is what most will be doing anyway, the roads in Belgium are not very good tho
low cars will detect Belgium roads in a scraping fashion...

unless i decide to drive the buggy to ibw i'l be on the first option. or get a volunteer to drive the van in belgium? :D

Unfortunately guys, on doctors orders, I'm going to have to pull out.

Long story short but have been seeing docs for a heart issue for a couple of years. Went back after Christmas as there had been a resurgence in its occurance. Tuesday night saw it step up several levbels and me carted off to hospital in the back of an ambulance...... :-[ :-[

I've now a number of tests to have. Ecocardiogram, thyroid function, treadmill test, more blood tests and at present I'm carrying a portable ECG recorder.....short story is they want me in this country until they've figured it out, or for if something untoward happens....

Its unlikely I'll get any travel insurance whilst its undiagnosed either...........whilst its fuc£ed me off immensely, its probably the lesser of two evils and I've my wife and little girl to think about.....

Sorry guys......

Thanks guys.

Well, hopefully have the ecocardiogram in the next week or two. Have an appointment with the doctor again Friday and can sort the referral to the cardiologist asap as I've got private healthcare with work and can get that sorted as soon as she refers me.....as for the rest of it, not sure. Have a portable ECG machine I've got to carry with me for a week to see if we can catch it....

Keith, yes, massively gutted too. Problem is if I keel over with it, I'm going to be struggling. There's no suggestion at the minute that I might, its just precautionary......

With just over a month to go before our epic road trip . . . .

For any newbies reading, you are all most welcome to join us in what is undeniably the largest gathering of Beach Buggies in Europe for 2015.

However, I`m not sure what space will be left  (if any) on the Harwich / Holland Ferry, and the most sensible option at this late date would be to use the Channel Tunnel or the Dover / Calais sailings.

And on that note, if anyone has already planned to go across that route, or is already nearby on the other side in Europe, please get in touch with us asap so that we can put another group of you together for a convoy

Cannot wait   :D

Dunno if there is any space left on the ferry. Or if booked places are transferable.

But if anyone is after a single inside cabin, maybe we can sort something out...

So either paypal khjvet@fsmail.net as a friend, gift whatever to save me paying the costs or cash at the kit car show where I will dish out as many possible. Can post if required but that will cost extra or catch up on route to belgium for the few that may be left.

Euro Buggers

Has anyone done a breakdown of the Euro side of the journey as yet, with fuel stops etc etc

If so, please remember that we need to meet up with Ruben who has suggested just before Barendrecht on the A15 is a services "shell station poortland" which is  30 min / 30 km from dock's. So we could do with working out a time to meet.

If no one else has done this yet, I`m more than happy to study a map for a route solution

Let me know?

Please Hold My Girlfriends Hand     :D

In all seriousness, most of you at Stoneleigh recently were aware of Lisa`s little predicament of double vision, general dizziness and total loss of balance, (which was the root cause of her two broken arms last year). Whilst we are awaiting an imminent date for brain surgery, we are determined that it is not going to stop us getting out and about, and Stoneleigh was a great test for IBW and proved that she can cope with the Buggy, camping and most of you lot. Her bouncing vision means she is very unsteady on her feet especially when walking about. If she gets a dizzy spell, (which is very frequently), she can regain her composure in a matter of seconds just by grabbing hold of something and standing still.

I`m of course keeping a very close eye on her at all times, but if you do see her struggling - Please just grab hold of her hand

Thanks   ;-)up

I can`t promise however, where her hands have been and they are usually sticky - wet wipes will be available  ;D ;D

I am thinking I may need a decent stick/post to help me stand up in the morning as I have to use the bedroom door some mornings, if I take one she can have that during the day I just may need it for the mornings as the tents do not have decent poles to grab these days.

Of course we will look out for her that goes without saying the same goes for any one on the trip

Appreciate the thought Snoopy, but a stick is something else for her to concentrate on, and as a result, very ineffective. She can still move about relatively well unaided, its just that every now and then she needs a hand to hold

Take a black umbrella as it will go well with the bowler and suit tee shirt  ;D

I have higher priorities, need to get the thing running again first.
Not going to give up yet and have appealed to my local club for help this weekend as at the moment cant get it to run so I can dive from holding the accelerator pedal to the back to even check the timing.

Been meaning to fit a remote starter switch at the back along with a small tacho, really wish I had now

Dave,

I know you have been focusing on the Dizzy of late -

I have a spare 009 with electronics inside and a spare coil if it would aid diagnosis, and can send down if needed ?   :-\

Apologies if this is teaching Grandmother to suck eggs, but a neighbour of mine was intrigued to see me do this and hadn`t realised how much he could have saved from buying those rip off continental beam deflectors from the likes of Halfords - so I thought I would mention it.

The picture on the left shows a headlight that has the various shapes of patterns on the front of the lens, and I have highlighted the shape and area that we are interested in - this is the bit that blinds the foriegners, and much as it pains me to do this, we have to comply with their law. For those with crystal headlights or clear lenses, the shape and position is the same, you will just have to use your imagination.

A few bits of black insulation tape cut to shape, and jobs a good un.   :D

Halfords £7.99 and my price, about eight inches of insulation tape   (http://www.dndservices.co.uk/smiley/bow.gif)

Absolutely right Gary
I took mine for MOT just after getting back from Holland and he pointed out it is an MOT failure (and illegal) to have headlights obscured

So only place to legally do this is on teh boat or the ramp to the boat after passport control  ;D

Not a problem in the UK Gary all they do is blank off the top wedge light that does the signs. Gives you USA style flat headlamp beams.

Not aware of any illegalities - headlights are not obscured, and is only the "kick up" bit thats covered  ;)

The tester can fail it if you have continental lights with a kick up to the right but flat USA type beams pass like many aftermarket motorbike lights.
We did not drive in the dark out there anyway so lights may only be needed in tunnels.

I`m presuming Welsh Dai is coming again - if so, has he been made aware of the MBC meeting times and routes so he doesn`t have to travel alone?

If so, does he have contact numbers etc ?

Dave on the headlamps you can cut the tape straight across the center of the lamp you just need the angled wedge below the line that way you get maximum light pattern.

I just tweeked the gps degrees, mis, seconds for hook port but it is listed on sat navs being a point of interest.

Also have a spare sat nav if needed with the continental stops as favourites after last years problems at the docks, maps are out of date but main routes will be ok it will get you there.

1st target achieved pizza hunt Chelmesford. Davedoon1 is now with us. For some reason the Jas clutch decided to make a noise and increase the free play so gears would not select al at a busy roundabout so vicky out snoopy in the driving seat and start engine in gear to get to pizza hut. Cable adjusted and seems fine so maybe the chassis tube weld has gone.
Spare cable in the stores of another buggy so continuing onwards.

Belgium dull  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ ever been to Bruges or Ghent, amazing beers, beautiful countryside where we were and a cruise with police holding the traffic that just went on and on with people out to see us all the way - fantastic - just forgive them for the Smurfs and its a great little country.

That would make it quite an easy route for me ---- Hull to Rotterdam and the straight across to Dusseldorf ---- Dates booked in my diary and will plan to get my buggy running much earlier next year so I dont hit the crap I had this year .... would really like to go and with it being Germany ... taking the buggy back to its place of birth and all that :)

Sounds like I need to plan better this time :)

14/15 is Pentecost, it's always that weekend as it's a Euro bank holiday.

HI All,

Back from the depth of Wales where dial up internet connection speeds would be an improvement. My smart phone was not at all smart the last few days.

Really great catching up with all the pictures - looking forward to the stories too next week at club night.

Like the pictures with the windmill and on the beach too. Great finds.

I have everything crossed that Ruth will be all but mended by next year and really really really want to come. Last time in Germany it was only Me, George, Paddy, Johnathan and Stefan that represented the Anglo-Swede brigade. Would be great to take a full invasion force next time  :D

It's getting earlier every year ;) makes sense though to be on their bank holiday every year to allow for travel. But we're in Europe, we should get a pentecost too!  ;-)up
