Title: Disc brakes for a beetle
Post by: crowncorvair on August 22, 2014, 01:37:20 PM
Hi The brakes on my Thomas crown Replica are vented discs - The original car had drums.
The Disc  brakes have done about 10 miles -
Does anyone want to swop a set of Front Drums with Chevy pat studs for a set of Front vented discs/(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e26/crowncorvair/IMAG0448_zps01913603.jpg) (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/crowncorvair/media/IMAG0448_zps01913603.jpg.html)

If anyone is interested can send more pics

Hi PCD is jag Chevy - which I believe is 4.75 inched  pcd

All I need is a set of drums and studs to swop

I've got to ask why?

Drums with a corvair engine will be a serious backwards step.

The original car probably had a single circuit master too but you wouldn't want to go there

With Flags here... OK you want it authentic but going by the photos you have done a truly amazing job. But for a part thats not seen and is crucial with such a corvair engine, I would stick with the discs. After all you are going to be driving it an awful lot more than just on the beach for a few mins chasing the seagulls with Faye Dunnaway.  ;-)up

I will have to do an imperial measurement.
I am sure my Pcd is Chevy, as mentioned above...

If it's just about the look then how about fitting back plates and having a fibreglass mould made of the front face of a drum, stick those behind the wheel and you would be hard pushed to see the discs.

Like these but in reverse.

Any car tuner worth his beans will tell you to go fast the first thing you have to upgrade is the brakes.

TBH you'll struggle to find any stud patterns other than the stock 'wide 5' when it comes to king & linkpin type front drums.

I've never seen any different stud patterns available 'off the shelf' and the standard design stops them from being re-drilled, hence the almost universal use of cast ally wheel adapters 'back in the day' in the US.

Sorry if this peees on your chips... :-\

my wide 5 drums have adapters on them to fit my wolf race wheels, which I am sure (not positive) are chevy pattern.

You are welcome to give them a spin (excuse the Pun) if you want to....!!

Is your front end not a ball joint one? It should be if it's  67.

To be honest Martin, I have to agree.

Unless you are going for an absolute concourse class replica, leave them be and spend some money on the rears. I've found several times that I've had the extra weight (and hence inertia) pushing me on when trying to stop. I've got discs up front but the low tyre pressure and distinct lack of weight over the front (despite the driver, before one of you f...ers gets in there!) finds me locking up quite easily and the extra weight just pushing.....

When I can afford some blank type 3 hubs ($300!!!) I'll be converting to type 3 on the rear......if your discs would fit my wheels, I'd have had them. Unfortunately, I'm a 5" pcd Chevy fit, not 4.75 and I could do without the hastle of drilling and studding again....

Hi the Suspension is link pins - It is the one part that is not correct  - but I will change it to IRS this winter - If anyone knows what rear arm assemblies I should look out for that would be great - also if anyone on the south coast can do it for me that would also be good

Took it out again this week end - it is a bit of an animal!!
