the lights were £45 delivered off ebay...... they are h4 type units, scratch proof plastic (yeah right !) come with wires, rubber boots .... no main bulbs.
I fitted ultrabright 55/60 blue tint bulbs £6 delivered
wired up the drl-led's to the side light circuit, as I'm using them as sides.
Be carefull using higher power bulbs on plastic lenses - I had 55/60 in mine, and they fogged up the inside of the pastic lens and discoloured them quite badly over a seasons useage.
:(
love the lights mate and u have cleaned it up well ,next u need to order a white flake hard top off pete ,they look amazing ,billa 4 x4 has just had pete make one in silver flake for the purple sidewinder i sold him,was my original plan and dave did it..looks awesome ,would look fab against the black..trust me ...top job buddy, think it may need a top ball joint doing if i can remember ....cheers chris ;-)up
Lights come from www.kitspares.co.uk. ?
cheers for the heads up Dave I will keep an eye on them .... although the lenses seller claim the lamps can handle 90/100 ..... so I'm hoping to be ok with the 55/60's
cheers Chris, the buggy is a beauty - just want to personalise it to make it my own now

cheers chris, you did a mint job underneath mate ... still looks spotless - the waxoil looks fresh still !! ... got some alternative seats in the pipeline, just got to work out the mount frames first :)
bought some new shocks today ... as it's very hard at the min ... my knackered old back can't take it .. lol
so today has been very eventful ... I popped over to the garage to have the shocks swapped over :) ..... simples !
(http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa410/tooshman9/20140215_101915_zps1946d89b.jpg)(http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa410/tooshman9/20140215_101923_zpsdfed172f.jpg)
also changed the oil out at the same time .....
(http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa410/tooshman9/20140215_102501_zps40014fb6.jpg)(http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa410/tooshman9/20140215_102510_zpsda1780c0.jpg)
then mentioned the pinch bolt as the next job on the list .................................. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( .............. disaster then struck.
the bolt was not tight, so we tightened it - great ! ...... no not great >:(
the thread was stripped !
ok - change bolt
so we changed the bolt. :)
next bolt (high tensile) ...... still stripped off the threads >:(
lets see why ;-)up
turns out after much checking & turning the wheel that the u-clamp is not gripping enough to stop the spline spinning in the upper steering column...............
had to strip half the front end off to get the column out .... >:( >:( >:( >:(
(http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa410/tooshman9/20140215_163802_zps36c5f725.jpg)
then the garage had to close for the day ........ great
took the parts home and have tried my best to make things not slip & spin under force.
cut some grooves into the shaft........ this is part way through operation - get into the groove !!!
it was totally smooth & offering no grip whatsoever.
cleaned out all the splines..... feels much rougher to the fingers now.
roughed up the pinch clamp inside.
just ordered some high tensile bolts, washers & nyloc nuts ..... so hopefully the combination of every thing will be good to go ;-)up
got to try to drop the bits back to the garage on Monday & let them see if it all works.
this is how it is now .... when I try to spin it by hand it does NOT move any more anywhere ...... & this is without the pinch bolt fitted.
do you guys think this will fix the problem ?? :-\ ??
The Pinch bolt on the U clamp is a nut and bolt, and not just a bolt as there is no captive thread on the U clamp (if that makes sense?)
A high tensile nut and bolt should certainly tighten the U clamp up enough to grip the splines..

the bolt we removed was in seriously bad shape ... all the threads were chewed beyond use ..obviously had been tightened beyond its limits with the nut.... I was only referring to the bolt so much, as this was the bit that also kept on chewing when we tried alternatives.
but the cause seems to be that the is no grip between the two sections of the steering column that the clamp is holding.
so I've been a little bit busy when I got the chance to make use of the nice weather..... decided to swap out the seats

It's the accelerator that's piquing my interest. I'm having a roller in mine but the two 'real rollers' I have are a bit crap. Years ago I had a roller skate wheel on a beetle and it was great. I'll probably do the same.
What have you done with yours - it's hard to tell from the picture?

the wheel system was already fitted when I bought the buggy, it used to have a blue wheel fitted to it. all I have done is replace with a red wheel & made it more secure & less wobbly by packing with washers........ works a treat now ;-)up
if you get a chance, can you take some photos of the fixing points for the harnesses on the back, I want to see what the release bracket looks like on the harness ;-)up

Roller skate wheel should go straight onto the accelerator spindle if got the right bearings then just a circlip on the end ;-)up

thats all i did, its worked a treat for the last 3 yrs :)
theres no hurry, Im just interested to see how they work,
mine uses bolt down anchor points, but looks like yours uses bolt and eye mounts, and I was just interested to see if the brackets on your harness just clip on so to speak.
Steve from what I remember when Chris had the buggy the harnesses at the top clip onto loops welded on the roll bar and I assume eye bolts on the floor, the harnesses themselves have the sprung clip mechanisms the same as mine and I guess your Luke ones ;-)up
Looks like I need to get a roller skate wheel then. Ta for the replies.

arh, so the clips are a bit like a carabiners ?
mine are bolt mounts on the top and the bottom, hence the reason I can only use caterham ones with bolt mounts which only Luke do.
A metal sleeve sits in the holes, the bolts then go through the sleeves and through the mounts on the cage, the sleeves allow the harness to move freely.
bugger..you just got me thinking, I could have just bought the eye bolts which would have gone through my mounting holes, and then I could have bought any make of harness with the spring clips ;D after the rubbish customer service I have had from LUKE.

Yes you could have Steve ::) Oh well hindsight's a wonderful thing ;D
I suppose you could still send back the badly coloured one and get a complete new matching pair possibly cheaper
they picked them yesterday, they are going to have a look, and more than likely, three weeks down the line I'll get a reply ;D

Soz, let's get back to your buggy
replacement rear tyres ordered today .... stepping up the rear end a tad ;-)up
What size and make did you go for??
Sounds good the proportions have to look right between tyre and wheel and front to back ;-)up
Buggy looks awesome mate! I've got the same shape and trying to get mine up to this standard! Just wondered if you were selling your old seats? Tried getting some buckets for mine but seems they are all to wide to sit in the pans! Many thanks!
255/50/17 ... FULDA ... managed to bag 2 brand new for £110 delivered !!! :D
they normally seem to go for around £80-84 ish each - so quite pleased with my find
hopefully they will arrive in the week - ready for swap over at the weekend
they should give me the chunkier look I need - finding 17's to fit onto 9.5j rims is a nightmare - loads of tyres are taller, but then I would foul on the spline tube that sticks out in front of the rear wheels >:(
I did loads of checking all different sidewall combinations until I found one that I think will do the job - then went on the quest to actually find some tyres that matched my calculations

Sorry just seen this, you can fit swing axle torsion bars and spring plates to get rid of them but the rear will be a little stiffer and the plates need shortening/new swing arm slots cutting in them.

made sure they were a decent fit, then popped them over to my trimmer.... I'd bought some nice vinyl & chose the Bentley diamond stitch style pattern.

I love this buggy, it has a really 'modern' kind of look to it, looks as if its just been bought from a dealership on a 14plate.. Neat , crisp and stylish. Are there any more plans for it buddy, or are you quitting whilst you are ahead ?

cheers matey .... next up is a get me home roof .... I don't want a permanent jobbie . or . a hard top ..... just a fold up roof that can keep most of the rain out of my eyes if I am driving around & get caught out in it, but can be folded up and stashed behind the seat

mahussive thanks to ... brigalo ... for his amazing artwork, this will be taking pride of place in the tooshville residence..... you have managed to capture all the quirky aspects of my buggy in great detail, absolutely amazing skill you have there matey
I can't thank you enough mate .... cheers ;-)up
It was a pleasure to do it pal.. I've been watching your thread over the months and i love the passion you have with your buggy, i see a bit of myself in you ( ooer missus ! ???) your attention to detail is second to non, if you're anything like me, your probably late for work the odd time because you just had to look at your buggy once more, or your missus is asking when you're coming in at night whilst you are standing in the dark looking at your buggy from different angles. For this reason i knew you would be chuffed to have your own artwork to put the cherry on the cake. ;-)up

absolutely bang on mate .... (not too sure about the bit of you in me LOL ;D ).... but deffo agree with the like minded ways..... I like to see if I can do something by myself, stuff that is rolling around in my head when I'm driving around at work - I don't always get it right & I'm not ashamed to say it either - but I have got to try stuff - got to play - got to push the old grey matter !
Very cool ;-)up
Looking nice mate! Had the very same thought about carpeting the floor yesterday and just seen it on your thread! Was the carpet pre made or was it just some thing you cut out?

had a mooch around the stalls at vw festival & happened upon an mdf fret panel .... vee-dub .... for the bargain price of a £5
i bought it with the intention of mounting it into the rear back board.
here it is
(http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa410/tooshman9/SAM_2771_zpsbf9b78da.jpg)
i removed the trim from the board and laid it out to mock up how i wanted it
(http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa410/tooshman9/SAM_2774_zps32201041.jpg)
had to work out where to cut the strips i'd already made before.
so i cut them to suit, then fixed them back into position...... ready for glue.
i always put the carpet underneath the board, so i get an outline of where i need to spray next.
flip it over.
then start working the carpet into the recesses.
then popped it back into the buggy.

afraid i can't tell you bud, i aint got a clue ...... found them on ebay brand new, got them re-trimmed to match the panels i made......... sorry i can't be of more help to ya
Hey!
I was the owner of this buggy from 1998 until 2005 and my brother and I shortened and rebuilt it in the streetfighter style during this time.
I am really glad to see it has been kept looking like we designed, in fact it's far smarter than when we finished with it!
I saw a few questions thought this post about some of the bits on the car:
The wheels were the most expensive part of the build (centerline mohave's imported from the states) at well over 1000 pounds.
The body was one of the first predators made by Mel Hubbard (and has it's own history) and the rollbar is 2.5 inch extruded stainless steel.
I bought this car in 1998 in Portsmouth while at university. At that time it was a long wheel base yellow GP MK1 with banded steel wheels. It was rebuilt as a short wheel base between 2000 and 2004 before being sold on.
There's some old pictures up here:

If anyone is interested.
I also have a spreadsheet of all the parts and what they cost during the build kicking about somewhere.
Cheers!
Rob
Hi Rob, welcome to the forum!
It's great to hear the history on this great buggy. You did a nice job on it. I saw it back when Chris Allen had it for a while. I believe it was the buggy that was the inspiration for when lee and Darren first built mine. ;-)up
