When he said you may have to get it looked at did he tell you were you had to take it to be inspected ?
If not how will he know you did anything about it.   ;)

In which case, Dave (Billy) get it sorted! You don't want to be rocking the boat by having to go the vosa to have it checked! (I assume with all the DVLA closures the minor roadside pulling, send you to the location police station?)

I have the same issue with my front plate on the sidewinder and will now this has happened certainly will make a couple of 45degree brackets to tilt it forward. Always best not to give them reason to stop you.

He gave me an on the spot vehicle defect form and had vehicle details checked to be fair he seemed a decent guy and had a good look round and loved the colour but as you say andy I wont be rocking anyones boat just looking for ways how to do it and if thats the only thing I got a defect for best know now and get it sorted , told him I'm on a constant learning curve  :D

I agree its better to be safe than sorry I have a cage fitted so don't have that problem I hope.

I have a Honda hornet motorcycle that has a high muffler that would burn the leg of a rear pillion.
Honda fitted a polished stainless steel cover and it remains cool when the exhaust is hot so you could do the same.
You could also have it engraved or cut out a pattern to make it look good.
You could wrap it in Exhaust Wrap for a temp solution or some heat shied cloth.

i do wonder some times weather the nice police man realy needed to do that, yes if you cant see number plate should give you a verbal, but as to exhuasts etc most of use could be removed from the highway for one thing or enother, burning your leg or eny other part on an exhuast is abit like ,hay stick your hand in a blender see if it hurts, common sense or is it just me against the nanny state ;)

Maybe you should touch the exhaust of the Police bike and then ask him what he is going to do about his?

Cheers hunter maybe it was just the local motor factors  I asked didnt do them , about motorbike exhausts it was mention think he was pointing out that it sticks out the rear rather than close to the side on a bike

Motor factors won't do they cause for post 73 cars they are illegal but for use pre 73 we are fine. Might be an idea to mount the rear plate higher up as they may get you on the rear plate being obscured by exhaust too. I stress might! Many have never been stopped. I only point it out since the police are keen on ensuring all plates are clear so the ANPR cameras pick them up.

As for the heat, I wonder if it's just a case of "and while you are at if, you ought to sort out the heat" friendly word. Don't they would stop you directly.

There may be a good market for perforated silencer heat sheilds if this stopping stuff catches on with the authorities but like Andrew says if you plate was ok you may not have been stopped.

The front of a sidewinder is notoriously bad for a plate.

If you fit it in the recessed position, I bet it lies at a 45 degree angle and you wouldn't be able to see it properly, if at all, from the front.

This bothered me, so I created some stand off type brackets (lengths of strip steel bent into a v shape) to make the plate stand more upright.

Ive had no issues yet.....

I bent up a piece of aluminium into a V so that the front plate on my sidewinder sits vertical.

no not really as i've never really thought about. if you want to go down this route then have a little think and then give me a holla.
i would need the dimensions of your can to build something though.

I like the idea of an exhaust cover, save trying to polish all that spaghetti  ;D ;D
Shame to hide it though, although I do worry when driving in town and soppy mums walk behind  the car with a toddler in a push chair.
Mesh might work and would show the exhaust still but be a bugger to keep clean, a plate with laser cut words or something might look cool.  Can you get plate laser cut Mike?
Maybe on mine bracketed on the bottom of the rear cage

i can do both, although laser cutting costs alot more, i can plasma cut here but it takes alot longer to clean up the edges and make it look nice.

This is how my number plate is. It was held with a couple of brackets bolted to the number plate recess and standing it of the body verticalizing it to near verticalage  ;-)up

(http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee483/David_Wainman/SN851084.jpg) (http://s1230.photobucket.com/user/David_Wainman/media/SN851084.jpg.html)

But as said already, are we becoming a nanny state? Plenty of motorcycles have hot areas, brake discs, hot engines and exhausts.
We are not a special bunch with unfriendly publicly offensive vehicles. We fall in to a class of many with exposed hot vehicle parts. If some dippy trout or husband of dippy trout lets there youngster go up and grab said hot part, more fool them. It's common sense not to go rummaging around a vehicle that could have hot parts without not knowing it's still hot touch. Shouldn't be messing around near them in the first place! But at the same time, a copper can't go round without knowing what he's talking about.

What about this guy. Perfectly legal and IVA or the other tested

(http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee483/David_Wainman/WP_001073_zps3e54d139.jpg) (http://s1230.photobucket.com/user/David_Wainman/media/WP_001073_zps3e54d139.jpg.html)

Nuff said. I think being told on one hand it needs to be looked at and then having so many different vehicles legally rolling around with the said problems existing makes a mockery of the system.

Have a nice day  ;-)up

..........anyway, they shouldn't be touching my vehicle in the first place, so call it punishment too!

it all comes down to the age of the vehicle, pre 58' you can  get away with pretty much anything but after that construction and use regs come into play , the other major problem is people buy stuff in from the states which is not legal to use here.

Illegal number plates are an easy pull and any plod will know it with ANPR requirements, the rest of the law bending stuff they generally ignore.
so in my book legal plates will stop the initial pull and thus the looking for anything else unless they are just nosey petrol heads who want a look anyway.

Have you guys put your hands on your exhausts? If I am driving around town or just taking my time, I can put my hand on my exhaust without getting burnt!. I wondered what my MOT chap would say about my exhaust but he was fine with it and having been in an accident with it, the police did not comment on it either.

Perhaps you just have to be brave if you get stopped and if the police are not happy with your exhaust, put your hand on it and say with the design and materials it's made of, it does not get too hot  ;D ;D ;D

Some of you will remember Mark Haynes.  He had a bobtail exhaust and when he parked up he'd put a wooden dowl/plug into the end with a 'flag' on it which read Caution Hot, or words to that effect.   It worked really well until he forgot to remove it, and when he started up it shot out and over an eight foot fence. No more plug n flag!  ;D
