That unfortunatly is not unusual a good ammount of waxoyl up the spine after refurb helps slow it down in the future.
Been to East coast manx today and ONE metalflake marygold Manx 2 is on its way with hard top roof and sidepods. Also when to Flatlands and bought some stainless hardwear, just need to push on with the chassis now. ;-)(-;
Reproduction frame heads are not the best, this took some fitting to get everything lined up properly but got their In the end, shortening next then floor pans. Haven't done anything like this for a while, really enjoying it.

That looks a nice neat job, it is worrying that a new headstock is lighter than a well rotted original but they work fine.
Yes I agree the aftermarket parts are a lot lighter, my background is Tarmac rallying and the steel work in rally cars is much lighter and you would be surprised how high a car of twice the weight of a buggy can land from and not even wince. :)

Thanks for kind comments. ;-)up Don't know if anyone else has come across this but I ordered red heavy duty pans from vw heritage, the pressing was of high quality but the gauge of the sheet was not 1 mm more like 0.8 at a push.
Sent them back and ordered the Wolfsburg grey pans these are far better and are nearly 1.2mm thick well worth the extra money.
really like seeing you pics on the chassis shortening, it looks well done and will help alot of people to do it themselves in the future.

Back is now back in order so was aloud back in garage which isn't difficult when your building buggy for your wife. Decided to weld the back of the pan on inside edge and flash it off a little bit then plan to create a nice smooth radius with some kind of panel sealant not really sure yet,

Managed a few hours in the garage tonight, decided to reinforce the pans with 30x30x3 box, so the body will pull onto the pan and not the other way round . Proper stiff how it should be :D

Struggling to get time on wife's buggy at the moment, anyway borrowed a mates mag drill and banged the holes in to box section to get a socket in for bolting pan to body.

You have to remember here this is the wife's buggy so all the carpets and curtains are chosen by her not me, and I can tell you there's going to be no black at all and some chrome, I might get to sneak in a few rally inspired parts ;-)up

Wife has chosen colour chips for the chassis, hard top roof and the seats they are sort of caramel browny type colours, gonna have standard wide steels with chrome hubcaps and she informs me she wants lots of chrome in the engine department. Only trouble is at the moment it's on the back burner as we are doing the garden and every other weekend is spent with our 8 year old son racing his kart.
Been looking over this again and I have to say that it's one of the best pan jobs I've seen. Looks amazing. Did you pie cut the 30x30 to get the bend?

Sorry dude still not done any more work on the buggy, been out 25 weekends this year with my boys kart racing, really need to push on with it now though try and finish it for late spring. :)

Sorry still no more updates , the world of kids karting has now taken over our lives, however we finish end of November for seven weeks , so I've been gathering a number of parts over the year ready to smash into it, so updates will be coming thick and fast come December ;-)up

Matt the MBC cruises came through Kidderminster quite a few times last year, pm your address and we could drop in to help with motivation and take Mrs Speedy for a buggy ride or just the threat of a mass visit will spur you on for a quick finish to avoid us annoying your neighbours ;D

As long as there's no more than about 15 buggys we should get you all on the drive, don't care about the rolling thunder as we live next to a railway line. :D
We have driven past a few times on the road into Kiddy it is an easy detour to your place.
So since I started my wife's buggy back in 2013 it all went well until our son started Karting at 8 yrs old. A lot of slick tyres have been worn out since then
Our son is now 14 and moved into rally cars this is much more fun for two reasons one there is lots of sideways action two we only go out about 10 times a year instead of the 27 weekends a year Karting. All this means I'm now back on the buggy with a lot more time on my hands and money 💰 junior rallying is cheaper than Karting believe it or not :D .
Anyway enough rambling a question to all you folks out there does any one no why you can't get these wheels any more I've been told tooling has been destroyed ?

I bet the son is really enjoying the junior rallying as it is a big step away from karting on a small track.
wide banded wheels are available one piece rims no idea but if you find some you could get VW centres fitted or drums/discs drilled to suit the wheels.
Have you asked Just Kampers directly? They were the ones importing them.
I emailed Limebug and was told manufacturers had destroyed tooling will try just Kampers but both websites say not available.
I have e mailed weller to see if they can make there classic wheel but without the holes stamped in as they do 10x15 and 7x15 4x130 pcd otherwise as Snoopy said will change centres in some other rims can mess about wth offsets then

you may need to remove the seat wedges and just fit lower packing pieces or make the wedges so the rear is at pan height.

Looking good, nice colour, but you'll find that your screen is on back to front. The groove in it should go to the front, it's for attaching a soft or hard top to should you want one at a later date.

Roll hoop came from flatlands back in 2014 not sure if he is doing buggy stuff any more. It's only really cosmetic.
It's stainless exhaust tube 1.2 -1.5 mm wall there is an outfit A44 exhausts in Worcester sure it's something they can do depending where you are in the world

An interesting addition is it a swirl pot or a submerged pump position.
It's a swirl pot taking fuel from main tank into pot so all fuel in tank is useable and no fuel surge with suction and return pipes to engine adds another 1.8 ltrs to capacity ;-)up

So after finishing seat belt mounts I noticed some of the primer I put on 5 -6 years ago was cracking and lifting. One of my customers does shot blasting had to repair his Forklift so a trade was made got the chassis re shot blast and have started priming again hope to get some colour on soon 8)

Do your inertia reel units have the adjustment for angle, ie, setting them at a non vertical position? I assume they'll need to 'lean backwards' to align with the upper shoulder pulley mount.

Seat belt reels have come out of a smart car same as the seats they are inclined to correspond with the hoop, tried them inclined and they pull out okay and retract they also lock when snatched. Mounted them to bracket welded into the floor as I felt this would be stronger, apart from the roll hoop mounting they mount the same as in a smart car. I also intend to attach the upper roll hoop mount into the body shell back down to the shock mount externally so as it's hidden but still very strong

So got to the point where I'm bolting the body to chassis and I noticed a while ago that the body really doesn't touch the chassis except at the very front and the rear, there is a good 8-10mm gap, I think this is probably due to the fact that the body was made in 2014 and never got put on the chassis properly until this year. So I have power planed some nylon strip into shape then I can tighten body down nice and tight. Anyone else had this issue with a Manx.

Yes Manx particularly badly misshapen and out of symetric synch either side. It`s normal for all body castings to change shape dramatically. Try fitting a body say in summer. Take it off again in winter to do work and try putting it back in place. Nothing lines up. "Glass fibre" structures continue to cure for years. In essence they fit where they touch and they barely touch ;-)up ;-)up
No need for spacers, just use a couple of longer bolts with big washers either side to pull the body and floor together the fit proper bolts. Standard VW floorpan gasket will work best.
The body fitting anywhere near correctly is a bonus, blocks of wood and jacks are the usual tools to get bodies aligned so bolts can be fitted.
Getting it nice and warm helps too. Space heater etc.

Also taking your time. Don't crank it all the way down at once, but do more smaller tightening allowing the shell to adjust to it's new positioning over a week before tightening again

Body is now bolted down onto home made neoprene foam gasket ontop of nylon shaped strips sikaflexed to the pan. The reason for not wanting to pull the body down is the 30x30x3 box section welded into the channel underneath, absolutely no flex in the pans.

Buggy is coming on nicely now and have made a start on wiring with all LED lights, bonnet has been on and off a few times trial fitting for clearances and why is it so daunting drilling holes in sparkly fibreglass. :o

Decided to wire in conventional indicator and headlight stalks with intermittent wash wipe also stop start keyless ignition just a bit of modern in the mix.
Wiring is getting there just need to wrap the loom now easier dash connections too.

Did you use the original steering shaft and what size U Joint have you used.
I'm contemplating changing my setup from a straight steering column shaft.

Column tube is vw so is shaft with the crumple cut off then 2 bearings 22mm bore 31mm OD, machined up 2 spigots one top one bottom tig welded in to tube to house bearings. Splined shaft is 400mm long double ended cut in 2 and chrome UJ is same 9/16 spline as shaft, all from Kit car solutions. The joint onto the steering box is machined from square billet. The splined shaft is weldable its not heat treated. Oh and 22mm shaft collars

So although I've built many engines diesels mainly and quite few petrol I've never built an aircooled vw and as this is the wife's buggy I've been given free reign in the engine department, so I thought something with some grunt would be the order of the day.

The roll hoop is not really strong enough as the upper seat belt anchor so this is a mock up I have done which will be laser cut in 3mm 316 then tigged on, this will then be bolted to the shell then an outer bracket down to the upper shocker bolt.
