Meanwhile....

Just as a side question, with these later columns are they classed as collapsable with regards to SVA/IVA, should it even be tested? I have the much earlier one which doesn't have the lattice section so clearly is not. (I just wondered if I was to swap to a later one would that be covered?)

Hi Jazzy. re. your PM yes the ignition switch could easily be removed if necessary. I've seen the remaining hole filled with a single large 'start' button in the past.

Jan. would be fine if you wanted it.

Perfect. Thank you.
I will have a think about ignition button being in that position when I get the column. Its not a bad idea.  8) 8)

Jazzy,

Twas me that put the ignition starter button in the hole.....

The cowlings are made of aluminium. Rub the black stuff off them (its a pain in the arse of a job...) Then polish them up. Look lovely. The switch is from the Savage range. Needed to fabricate a sleeve to sit inside the cowl and hold the switch.

Ive not actually installed yet. Plan was to hook it in with a transponder immobiliser system which would onmly allow the engine to start if I'm sat in or very near the buggy

That is very lovely. I have not seen metal cowlings before, I have only seen the plastic ones.
Where did you get that one from originally.?? Unless you want to part with that one of course........  ;D ;D ;D

All the 'cowlings' are metal, they're just painted black to look a bit plasticky.

Jazzy, as Dave said and as did I in my post, it's a std beetle cowling. Rub it back with some sandpaper and it's aluminium underneath. The black is hard as nails and a paim to remove but it's worth it. Get the cowling on a polished and it ends up like this!!

I sold that one I'm afraid as I upgraded to a double stalk set up. The stalks are the same and can be polished and look like this...

That one is now on my buggy!!

Not wanting to cause an argument here and I will always bow to more experience, but I can say 100% that the one fitted to my current column is plastic, only because a bit snapped off...  ;-)up ;-)up

Having said that, as I am planning to purchase the one from you, I will have the benefit of a proper VW one instead, so in the end all good.
I will get me dremel on it and polish the bugger out of it (hopefully......)   :o :o

I've never seen a beetle with a plastic cowl unless it's of a very late model or some other vehicle..... Any chance of a pic, just to settle my curiosity of course.  ;-)(-;

as it has VW / Audi label, I guess that will make it fairly late, not sure when they stamped both badges on parts.

Looks to me like its from a model with twin storks. Back then the Audi emblem was printed on... As yours is embossed and clearly plastic in origin I'd say it was from late model 1303 1980s.....that is a guess mind you though.  :-)Geek

Thank you for posting up the pics to prove us old uns have still got a thing or two to lern  :D :D

My column is indeed twin stalk, but I am looking to make it a single, hence buying the one that Manxdavid has for sale.
As the chassis is '67 I would have thought it would have a single stalk at that point in time. Unsure if this is right, but hey ho.
I would well imagine that the previous owners have probably used a different column in exactly the reverse way to me, so wanted twin stalks, if you get my drift...  ;D

Its all good and I look forward to having the opportunity to polish a metal casing and make it bling.....  ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up
As I said before (because my was plastic) I did not know they had metal shrouds, but it all makes sense now in a strange kind of way.

:) :) :)

Yes 67 is a single stalk so David's will do what you need. Don't forget you will need a wiper switch if you haven't already sourced one. Try volksmagic  in oldbury Birmingham

I have not heard of them, but will give them a try.
I have got some switches etc in my collection of bits and bobs which might do the job, but will investigate Volksmagic. Always good to have another source.   ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up

Sorry, I don't like static shows like Volksworld, they leave me cold. I'd only be going to catch up with B&W bit it's a long way so not bothering.

I'll try to find if someone can take it down there for me though.
