Title: Ace cafe Run - Sat 17th August
Post by: AndyRobinson on February 25, 2013, 10:43:22 AM
The usual great day out organised by SDBC - But everyone is welcome!!!!!

Details to be confirmed but typically, meet mid morning over in the east end (Beckton retail park) and cruise through the Limehouse link tunnel, along the Embankment, Parliament Square, Buck House, Park lane and then onto the Ace cafe for a meet and a spot of food and drink in the afternoon.

The fun we have driving through the West end with all the tourists is second to none!!

What? why not? :(

If not Chris, no worries we will sort another day in addition to wander round the streets of London town, like Ralph McTell would.

I dont think the buggy will be ready - the british weather is making it slow progress.
But Owen and myself will be there - even if it is just at the Ace to meet everyone and steal ideas from all the other buggies. :D ;-)up

When we leave home (close too A3/M25 J10) we call into Cobham servs, then onto Clackett lane servs, then through the tunnel and meetup with the Essex boys at Thurock servs and on to Beckton.

The times will pop up soon so if you guys wanna meetup at any of those servs that could be the way to plan  ;)

Latest 8)

Starting from Cobham Servs M25, meet there 08.00 and gonna leave there 8.15 anti-clockwise M25,
then Clacketts Servs 09.00 and leave there 09.15 anti-clockwise for Thurrock servs 10.00,
leaving there for Beckton 10.15 to arrive at the Beckton meetup 11.00ish, fuel up and ready to roll 11.45 latest.

The time slot for "Ace " is 2pm-4.30. So once we get there, chill out, giggle at the drive, have a bit of lunch and a drink and head off about 4.30 after a few piccys.

Route and notes to follow soon.  ;)

So, who's coming and do you have a CB fitted and are willing to get involved and help out in the convoy?  ;-)up

Cheers H

Any Questions  ???

Owen and I are coming - our buggy is no where near finished but we will meet at thurrock.
Lots of names to put faces to - have a chat and share the madness.
As this is my first beetle based toy - i find myself pondering how the box of parts is supposed to bolt back on the chassis. I might just get some clues  ;-)up

Title: Re: Ace cafe Run - Sat 17th August
Post by: AndyRobinson on August 06, 2013, 07:01:13 PM
Postcodes could be tricky, not a bad idea at all... might have a go.. But could take a while and still be dependent on different sat nave. But will load the maps on here in a few mins

Probably meet you guys at the cafe pm,as its only 20 clicks up the rd from hemel, pointless for me to fight my way through the london traffic to meet at beckton, then to come back again, depending on weather of course.

Graham, no worries, many do just meet us at the cafe and its a great social atmosphere there. ;-)up

But the real fun of the day is the cruise and the reaction from the many folks in London. If you can do the cruise I would recommend it. But if you can't or makes sense to just come to The Ace, that would be great too!  ;-)up

because i had to check .......there is no congestion charge at the weekends and the ace cafe is running a kit car day 1100 - 1630 so there should be stuff to see before the Buggy slot from 1400 -1600 . cant justify the run round to thurrrock from down here so will try to meet along the route in mid london and then come back out with you to the ace cafe . if anyone wants to drive up from southampton leaving here bout 11 then let me know as that should put us in london for 1230 .

For those meeting at the Bulls Head, best to leave at 10:00, and no need to go down the a10, easy route through Waltham Abbey towards Chingford, to meet the North Circular

Here's a bit more detail on the route.....any queries or errors give me a shout.

Ace cafe route - 17th August 2013

Approx. 33 miles Maps says 1hr 25min but with stops/traffic its nearer 2hr 30mins

Initial pre-cruise meeting at Thurrock services by petrol station (for essex/north M25 crew)

10.00 Depart Thurrock and follow A13 to B&Q at Beckton.

10.15 - 11.00 meet at B&Q Beckton This is situated just off the roundabout of the A406/A13 next to KFC and McDonald's there is also a Sainsbury petrol station their for those running low on juice.

11.00am We then depart Beckton and follow A13 towards Canary Wharf and London

We will then branch off the A13 and follow signs for Canary Wharf and proceed through the Lower Lee underpass. Once out the other side we go over the flyover taking in views of canary wharf tower and other skyscrapers in London banking centre. We soon enter Limehouse link tunnel where the buggies echo and sound phenomenal. Be warned 3 speed cameras in the tunnel and it is a 30mph limit.
Upon exiting the tunnel we continue down The Highway towards central London. This road will run straight into London and after a few miles Tower of London and tower bridge will appear on your left.

Continuing along the route we bypass the City of London opting for Lower Thames Street where we have Cannon Bridge to pass under and Backfriars underpass we continue out of the city and towards the west end of London along the Embankment (lots of traffic lights - there might be the chance for traffic light grid starts - lots of tourists but also lots of police) where we will be greeted by Big Ben where we turn right towards parliament square. We take the 3rd exit off of Parliament Square heading towards Buckingham Palace we will enter St James Park and follow it straight towards Victoria but turning right upon exit of the park and immediately re-entering. The park where Buckingham Palace is on your left. We follow the road keeping the royal palace to our left to head towards Hyde park corner. Upon reaching Hyde Park Corner we take the 3rd major exit up Park Lane towards Marble Arch.
Following Park Lane we reach Marble Arch where we enter the park off the roundabout. We drive leisurely through the park (watch out for horse riders) before exiting into Bayswater Road. We then follow Bayswater Road passing Notting Hill Gate and arriving at Holland Park roundabout. We then continue towards Shepherds Bush and circumnavigate the green before driving down Wood Lane passing Westfield Shopping Centre on our right and BBC TV centre on our left. We then pick up the A40 towards Ealing and follow the road until we turn off for the A406 at Hanger Lane junction. Following the A406 Ace Cafe is situated about 1 mile down on your left

We booked in at The Ace for 2pm until 6pm, though interestingly they have the Kit Car club booked in before we are due to arrive.

Hope to see you all there

Can all those with CBs and / or a decent knowledge of the route volunteer to help out a little keeping us altogether:

I will assist however I can on that one.

It's pretty much the same route as we did last year.

Carole has done some very good instructions for keeping in convoy, which I will post later if that's ok. Remember keeping together is not about speed especially in London, low speeds (but still loud in the tunnels) is the key! There are various points along the route which will allow us to regroup as much as possible. But it is inevitable particularly once on embankment that we will be split into smaller groups.

Andy, your written route says we go Wood Lane (A219) & past BBC TV centre, but Google route says West Cross Route (A3220). Which road should we use?
Title: Re: Ace cafe Run - Sat 17th August
Post by: AndyRobinson on August 15, 2013, 10:52:56 PM
Oh yes!  :-[ good spot.

To be honest either will do! They both soon lead together onto A40 and to be perfectly honest, by that stage, due to the very nature of the traffic on a Saturday afternoon in that area and its towards the end of the route, we will be quite split up so it's just personal choice really.

Wood lane was the original plan but west cross may be better. (I did that by accident on the google map)

By then it's whatever is best to get to Ace Cafe. A40 will be busy anyway.

Title: Re: Ace cafe Run - Sat 17th August
Post by: AndyRobinson on August 16, 2013, 12:15:25 PM
Actually guys, the following are some convoy rules and guidelines which should help to keep everyone together as much as possible. Carole and Hunter put them together following other convoy guidelines. These were used very well at News. Its all down to the lead car doing it right.

Of course a cruise through the centre of town is tricky so lets see how well they work, but there's no reason why they shouldn't.

There will be various points along the way where we can collect folks back up. Remember, the slightest gap left by not making a traffic light behind will make it very very hard for that follower to catch up.
---------------

How not to lose yer mates on a convoy.

After several years of convoys and losing the odd vehicle during a run we thought it was about time we shared a few rules and pieces of etiquette for the better way to keep a convoy together.  Now it would be nice if other road users just stayed out of our way and the lights all stayed green 'till we passed through them, but unless we get a police escort it just aint gonna happen.  So, this is what we need to do as the authorities aren't gonna help and we want to enjoy our convoy safely.

Do 'Convoy Rules' mean anything to you?

For those of you whom it doesn't the following is intended to explain the meaning and purpose of a few simple rules.

The success of a convoy run depends on two things:
a) The driver of the lead car knowing where he is going!
b) The driver of each car staying, WITHOUT FAIL, with the car BEHIND and NOT the car in front.

In practice this means that each driver, starting with the lead car, drives in such a way that they never lose visual contact, for any significant period, with the car following.

DO NOT attempt to stay with the car in front under any circumstance. Your responsibility and allegiance is with the car BEHIND you. Keep the car behind you in sight, if it is not then STOP in a safe place asap!  The car in front of you will then realize that you have stopped and will also stop, and so forth until the lead car has also stopped.

You should drive at a speed and in such a way that the car behind you stays in visual contact.

This is the Fundamental Rule of Convoy driving.

The following are a few ideas/hints on how to achieve this:

• Drive at a speed that you can comfortably maintain. If all goes to plan the actual speed of the convoy should be set by the slowest car. If you find you are pulling away from the car behind slow down slightly to allow them to maintain visual contact. Conversely if the car behind you closes the gap, and you are able and willing to raise the speed slightly, do so until you have re-established a reasonable gap between the cars.
• Do not close up on the car in front unless the car behind has closed up on you! Try and maintain a constant speed, try not to keep speeding up and slowing down. The effect is accentuated as you pass down the convoy.
• Space between cars. There is no set distance; it will depend on speed, road conditions and line of sight. On main roads the distance can be quite large allowing other vehicles to overtake easily; on country routes the gap should be reduced to aid visual contact but still allow space for other traffic to overtake. In town the gap should be as small as possible. This aids visual contact and maximises the number of cars that can pass through traffic lights etc during each sequence.
• Use your indicators; make sure that if you are changing direction that you try and indicate in plenty of time for those that are following to be able to see that they need to change lanes or get in the correct lane for the change of direction.
• If you go through a traffic light that changes to red the last car through should wait, somewhere safe, for the lights to change again and the next car comes through.
• If you go around a roundabout always check that the person behind you is through.  This may mean going around again (however many times is necessary).  Don't worry 'cos the others in front of you will be stopped up and waiting for you.

N.B.
It would be really handy for those that are going to attend the event to make themselves known in advance. Also, if they have CB radio's fitted or if they are in anyway familiar with the route or even a part of the route then let us know. This would help with the organization and sorting of the convoy with key contacts placed in strategic positions being able to inform those ahead if there have been any issues occurring toward the rear of the convoy. If you are also carrying a passenger they could help with a little light route checking to help keep you on track and up with the rest of the convoy.

#@?#** Android, got the route on it, then it would only show the directions not the map, now it has lost it again and is back to plotting its own route from Grays to Ace.
Just printed everything and hope I get a passenger who can read it for me  ;-)(-;

I wont be doing anything too crazy  ;D in fact Gary was worse than me last year (Great to watch as he smoked his motor from the lights) :)... I will abide by the convoy rules as I am no guru on London roads, I just did as Chris did last year and tried to stay with everyone.

I have printed off as well, I will use my phone if needed. Yes google maps doesnt seem to have a save function for routes, or not that I know off.

See you all tomorrow, It does a little rain in the afternoon 2-9pm bring ya hoods!

Cant believe I didn't catch the Grand Prix start at the lights on the embankment on the video with Gary and Aaron  :-[ :-[

Any way, will make sure all cameras are OK tomorrow (well at least one of them is water proof!) Yes there is a slight chance of a few spots towards the end of the day as we finish at Ace. (I mean at the end of our allotted time at Ace itself - don't speak too soon but the cruise should be dry!!!)

I know its tricky balance keeping with the one in front but also making sure the ones behind are there too!  ;-)up

Remember guys NO TAILGATTING TOMMOROW! old bill will be looking for new law nicks.

Joking apart.... Very true!

And also, remember there are cameras everywhere (not just on my buggy!) so think twice about getting caught in a box junction, jumping red lights, bus lanes and even stopping in the cyclists box before red lights!

Well done Clem, yes DJ rix made it! But we got that message as we waited for him. (he soon had it fixed!) Good to meet you and also to the other new faces there!

Numbers were a little down on previous years 13 buggies on the cruise itself (more at ace cafe), but the rain held off for the cruise and most of the time at Ace. The cruise went well, we stuck together, all went well.

And we had a surprise guest appearance by Mr Ludicruz!!! Great to meet you!

Hopefully captured it all on the front n rear cameras this year!  ;-)up

Well after we left the ace, Chris needed fuel, so with mine still coughing and backfiring, I topped up too. 5 minutes later and mine was running sweet again.

So it looks like my problems may have been a duff tank of fuel.

Oh well, still got the tuneup due, so hopefully I won't be sooting plugs up in 8 miles anymore.

Good to see everyone there. And sorry for those I smoked out, or deafened with the explosions.

I feel the need to speak up on behalf of Chris, someone was trying to encourage anybody to remove your keys, even I was approached, luckily I was made of stronger stuff, they didn't have the bottle to do the deed themselves, all I'm going to say is that, had, their other half been there they would had been more controlled.

It was great run but London seemed pretty quiet both traffic and tourist wise, maybe we just werent noisy enough.
There were events going on at the Tower and in the Mall so maybe they were all there instead of lining our route.
It was good to see more turn up at the Ace, several there before us and even more turned up later

Clacton can be good, can check out the parking, good excuse for a run out

Well Chris if you are suggesting Skeggy... It's a bit of a trip for most (well nearly all!)

That said its Skeg Vegas this coming weekend, another weekend vw show. I "may" pop over there, but only because I really have to head up to see my ma.

I know it's a bit Essex based,, but Southend is a good shout. The cruise along the sea front is very good indeed!

But meanwhile heading back to topic, have just finished editing the video from yesterday. Have you any idea how long it takes!! Well it's just processing the file now - takes 3 hours for the final 13min clip! Then I have to upload it too (trying it at full 1080 res.) so hopefully at some point it will be uploaded and yes, it's a cracker! Including my "losing" my keys!

Sorry Dan, I have just not got around to it yet... I know I must  ;-)up

Anyway, guys calm down I know you are keen and excited!!!  :D :D

But as a guideline.....

This Ace run one, is just a single cruise, with just 2x cameras running and using a single audio track, had to get the 1.5 hours down to under 15mins as goal. It took 3.5hrs editing (having got the 20gb of movie files onto my Mac), then once completed the editing is done it took over 3.5hrs to process - Admittedly I did go for the max setting for youtube being 1920x1080 (though lower resolutions are available) And it looks like the front camera didn't like that resolution much   :(

That gave me a file of 900mb so then just had to upload that at home (in the country remember) so that only took 2.75 hours......

(I really need to speed these things up!)

So you want to see it? Here's the link.... Oh hang on I will do a new thread for it!
