Title: re Ginger Sidewinder
Post by: Fran_GP on February 24, 2013, 11:17:27 AM
Before talking about Ginge, just thought I'd post one of may fave photos of my first buggy.

So having got the sentimentality out of the way here's a pic of Ginge today.

Getting ready for a freshly tweaked / rebuilt motor plus some smart new end cans that will finish up Mike's excellent pipework and tidy the rear end up a treat.

Hoping to get the motor back in the next couple of weeks so will post up regular news.  :) :) :)

Cheers

Am feeling the same Peter. Really missed not having the buggy on the road last summer.  :( :( :(

Marks is OK I think and have dropped Steve a note to get him on this site so we'll find out what he's up to. Last I saw he was asking about Farmer Robs spare 2 litre engine so perhaps he's blown his up!  :o :o :o

is there a gauge mounted on the tank, or is that just the sender ?.
Ive done mine like this,
sender one side and gauge on dash, the sender cable runs inside the hose just to keep it looking tidy, also matches the other side  ::), earth attached underneath,
roll over valve breather the other side, hose runs up to the twin breathers on the cage, I bought it to fit to the engine at some point in the future, but I though, what the hell, might as well use it now  ;D
yes I know the cap is vented, but liked the look of it  ;D
both mounting brackets follow the curve of the spun tank and sealed.
at least chad said it looked purposful  ;-)up

That's a much blingier set up than mine Steve, looks very neat. It is the actual gauge in my tank not the sender so not quite as easy to see when you are driving along!  :o :o :o
Have also got my tank mounted higher up and bolted to the roll cage which gives me luggage space underneath.  :) :) :)
Hope to see yours on the road soon.  ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up

So where are we up to?  ::) ::) ::) Well the parts for my engine will be with the builder on Monday so fingers crossed I should have the motor back before Easter. Guess what I could be doing that weekend!  ;) ;) ;)

Anyhow, today I thought I'd see how my new end cans will look. Here's a before and after shot. Looks like I'm going to need an adapter made as the pipe size on the can is bigger than the pipe size on the pipe, hadn't expected that.  ??? ??? ??? Mike if you are looking then there's an e mail on it's way to you!  ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up

Absolutely, also fiddled about taking old split ball joint boots off and measuring up for new ones so I don't get caught out at MOT time.

Swapping the cans over also means I don't have to use a sponge to clean the muck off the old ones!  :D :D :D ;D ;D ;D

Chris, Andy, Roadrunner - will be up for a spin out when things are sorted for certain.  ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up

Here's some piccies. 1) the inside oof the barrel where the problem happened, 2) the old lump that never got me anywhere 3) the rebuilt one before it went in and 4) what it looks like now.  :) :) :)

Soooooo.......what goodies were done on the rebuild?  ::) ::) ::)

- New 044 heads to replace stock standard items
- Porting of the new heads which are now flowing about 15% more than out of the box
- 1.25 ratio rockers and all pushrods adjusted to the correct length
- Compression ratio changed to 9 to 1
- Drill for full flow - External cooler on order
- Oh and a hole drilled to take an oil temp sensor :D :D :D

Before it went pop the old unit was pushing out 100 bhp so whilst we don't know we reckon the mods could have added another 25%. ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up

Looking forward to getting the oil cooling fitted and going for a run.   ;D ;D ;D

Thanks Peter,

Also had a long chat with Alan at GAC who did the rebuild who came up with a stack of tips for me and a way of easily and more accurately setting the valve clearances that I'd never haerd of before.  :) :) :) It involves setting them at 90 degrees off TDC and needs no feeler gauges.  :) :) :)

Ginge is a beast and some mighty impressive work has gone into her ... but beaware Fran is on the darkside and despite all my efforts I have not managed to make him see the light ...  can you believe he lives in a world where there is no such thing as AutoSol!   :'( :'(

I once got Fran to add something bling... well some mirror tape in his rear lights .....  So good luck fellow Chromosexuals

This is still one of my fav pics of Ginge ... you can get a great idea of how low it is and the angle of the screen compaired with my buggy in the background  ... plus it tells you that Fran is not only on the dark side... he is not exactly tall

Andy - you'll have to go some to persuade me on the polish front. Look closely at this photo and you'll see what it took in terms of refreshment just to get me just to put shiny stuff out of sight on the inside of my tail lights. ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up

Had a good full day in the garage yesterday and things are looking good on the cooling front.  :) :) :)

Here's the space I had earmarked for both the radiator and the filter head. As you can see I meticulously the whole area in preparation.   :D :D :D

(http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu8/Fran_GP/045_zpsd97adb9f.jpg) (http://s628.photobucket.com/user/Fran_GP/media/045_zpsd97adb9f.jpg.html)

First things first 1 x cooler installed............................then ran into a slight problem  ::) ::) ::)..............no space for the filter so a quick rethink and found somewhere else close by!   ;) ;) ;)

(http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu8/Fran_GP/050_zps05c79dc9.jpg) (http://s628.photobucket.com/user/Fran_GP/media/050_zps05c79dc9.jpg.html)

Then ran into another problem, because I had a change of plan on locating the filler head, of the 6 x connectors I had bought only 2 were now the right type so will be reordering the right ones tomorrow.  :P :P :P

................but in the meantime I did manage to make one pipe up. Luckily I'd been given a few tips as otherswise there would have been lots off $%#£££&&&@@£#^$ going on!  ;D ;D ;D

  (http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu8/Fran_GP/053-1_zps25e1aec3.jpg) (http://s628.photobucket.com/user/Fran_GP/media/053-1_zps25e1aec3.jpg.html)

Last job was then to fit one of the new end cans using a nifty adaptor knocked up by who else but Mike.
Thanks Mike it worked an absolute treat.  ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up

So young Jedi you have started you quest from the dark sided.  What did I say at the end of last year and repeated already this year .... annodiosed is the new bling !  Shocked you didnt get them in some crappy dirty gingerish colour.... but delighted to see you are starting to see the light.

Just repeat after me several times young Jedi ... thank you lord Autosol for we are truely grateful for all things Autoglym and the bling that you cast upon us. Give us strength to polish and lead us not into temptation of the nasty dark side.  For I am truley a believer and will no doubt worship images of Clem , Andrew and Krugs buggies for now and eternity and never let me forget the bling that was called Fester

What a lovely optimistic and brotherly lot all you Chromos are  :) :) :) I'm looking forward to my ongoing mission to open your eyes to the wisdom and ways of the Dalai Mel.  ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up All components have been placed to perform perfectly whilst gathering as much crud as quickly and efficiently as possible!   ::) ::) ::)

New connectors arrived today and bend in all the right directions in all the right places.  :D :D :D All looking good for the weekend.  :) :) :)

Keep your eyes peeled for pictures of shiny stuff that won't be shiny for long.  ;D ;D ;D

A good day in the man cave today.  :) :) :)

After repairing the lawnmower and hosting Mr Robinson for a cuppa got down to work.

External oil system now plumbed in.  ;-)up
Exhaust now fully fitted  ;-)up
Carb linkage reconnected.  ;-)up

Just a few more odds and ends to do then it'll be fired up.  :o :o :o

End result can be seen here.

And here's a special close up for Krug and his fellow worshippers of bling. I've already achieved a slightly 'antiqued' look by creating the pipes using mole grips and a slightly dodgy adjustable wrench.  :D :D :D You guys will just have to admit defeat and accept you won't convert  me to the shiny side.  ;D ;D ;D

Quick update as this weekend didn't go as planned. :( :( :(

All put back in yesterday but try as I might the thing wouldn't kick into life. So during a quick chat with Alan at GAC I decided to pull the complete engine back out and drop it back over to him to have him fifnshg set up, fire it up and dyno it at the same. So end result will be better as I'd probablly have wanted it dynoing anyway.  :) :) :)

Watch this space.  ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up

Ohh Fran that's a pain...

Well, hopefully it will come back ready to fire up, and putting it on
his dyno will mean it gets sorted out ok.

Absolutely. Also means that it will be done much quicker than if I spend time tinkering as you never know whether the carbs may need some work etc, so this way it'll be bob on. Only challenge then will be the MOT.  ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up

Ginger's alive. Engine fired up and a quick spin round the block all felt fine.  :) :) :)

The test (literally) will come on the trip to the MOT centre on Saturday.  :o :o :o

Watch this space.  :D :D :D

New exhausts are much more discrete than the old units....................still there's always the removable baffles to play with.  ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up

Just a bit Mike!  :) :) :) Spent yesterday afternoon fitting this little beauty so I don't fall into the overheating trap again! Also have on the list some slightly longer front shocks to give me a chance of getting into your field...................and of surviving the MK speed humps.  ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up

Ginger update.

For those of you who remember the 'suspension gate' episode from swanage last year then this weekend is a big one. Have worked out how to neatly move my lower rear suspension mount and planning to knock up the solution with help from my bro :-)Geek :-)Geek :-)Geek

Update plus pics to follow shortly. :D :D :D

Right so here's an update.

The new shocks and special mounts are now old news and transformed the suspension ie I now have some.

That left this winters project................. an overhaul of the rollbar mounted switches that were neat but literally gave passengers headaches.

Here's an update:

HERE'S WHAT WE STARTED WITH

(http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu8/Fran_GP/IMG_3028_zps1aok7n4y.jpg) (http://s628.photobucket.com/user/Fran_GP/media/IMG_3028_zps1aok7n4y.jpg.html)

HERE'S THE RATS NEST INSIDE!!!!

(http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu8/Fran_GP/IMG_3031_zpsjsmiiune.jpg) (http://s628.photobucket.com/user/Fran_GP/media/IMG_3031_zpsjsmiiune.jpg.html)

HERE'S AN UPSIDE DOWN DRAWING OF MY IDEA

(http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu8/Fran_GP/IMG_3029_zpsplodpeut.jpg) (http://s628.photobucket.com/user/Fran_GP/media/IMG_3029_zpsplodpeut.jpg.html)

AND HERE'S THE BITS AND PIECES I BOUGHT TO MAKE IT REAL..............SIMPLES.............GULP

(http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu8/Fran_GP/IMG_3030_zpss36sqevu.jpg) (http://s628.photobucket.com/user/Fran_GP/media/IMG_3030_zpss36sqevu.jpg.html)

END OF DAY 1...................HMM THAT TOOK LONGER THAN EXPECTED

(http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu8/Fran_GP/IMG_3035_zpsurqdpuai.jpg) (http://s628.photobucket.com/user/Fran_GP/media/IMG_3035_zpsurqdpuai.jpg.html)

PART WAY THROUGH DAY 2 - ALWAYS NICE TO CUT SOME HOLES

(http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu8/Fran_GP/IMG_3041_zps7gix1g2y.jpg) (http://s628.photobucket.com/user/Fran_GP/media/IMG_3041_zps7gix1g2y.jpg.html)

END OF DAY 2 - LOOKING GOOD BUT NO INNARDS YET

(http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu8/Fran_GP/IMG_3048_zpsadtlvfmb.jpg) (http://s628.photobucket.com/user/Fran_GP/media/IMG_3048_zpsadtlvfmb.jpg.html)

So this weekend
1) draw a map of what the existing wiring does
2) start rewiring in a (hopefully) tidier way!!!

Wish me luck - haven't done this much wiring before.

Cheers

Fran
