Could this be bad? I'm hoping not
Got the trans axle out of my Rat and was hoping not to have to do too much on it other than clean the casing fit new boots and get it back in.. but I've noticed one of the swing axles isn't moving at all in terms of up down and to and fro motion. I haven't dismantled anything yet but thought i'd raise the question on here first.
Is there anything I can do to check the trans axle for condition??
I've never driven this buggy so I have no idea what its like under power. If I remember correctly it seemed ok in terms of suspension movement when I looked it over before I bought it but I cant remember for sure.
Any ideas?? Must admit I can't stay long in the garage in this heat.............
does it move pretty easily or is it solid if you try moving by hand. I guess somebody has had the sideplates off and they are to far in causing the bind there are gaskets used as shims. Chimps were solid and would not move at all and with nuts missing and loads of silicon sealastic around the side plates so we swapped the box.
another thought is was there oil in the box as I have seen rust on the fulcrums when left outside unprorected.
It also been sorned since 2009 and looking at it I don't think the side plates have been off for years if ever!!
One side is solid and the other moves freely. Probably gonna have to take off and have a look at it . Is that a hard thing to do?
One thing is the drums are still attached at either end and I didn't loosen the big hub nuts before i took the trans axle out.
draining the oil first will help stop a mess,
you can undo the 36mm nuts using a wheel bolt in one hole and a decent bar with the short end over the top of the hub centre turn the drum anti clockwise so the bolt hits the bar and the bar rests on the floor. one person stands on the axle tube to keep it down whilst you apply the undoing pressre. then strip out the hub bearing and back plate off.
remove the boot then undo the nuts (inner ring) then the outer casing will come off at this stage you can see in and feel the shaft movement and look inside.

To be honest I've not done much on it at all since then and had planned to put the tranny back in as it is but just cleaned up.
I really don't remember this axle being stuck like this when it came out. Looking at the drums I have to say it looks as though the axle tube may be turned slightly when compared to the other side. The drum rotates freely enough, there's just now up and down or forward/backward movement in the tube.

Yup I'm guessing this is what I need to do. Any tips what I should be looking for when I get the thing out??
Hunter, a guy at work says he has a torque tool so I'm going to give that a go. Thanks for the offer though. Just didn't (hoped) I wasn't going to have to do this!!!
You'll need to whip the side plates off and check the condition of the plastic 'daisey' discs that the axles move on. You'll need a full gearbox gasket/shim set when you reassemble as the sideplates need shimming to get the correct resistance.

Loosend the plates and its freed up now. Cheers for the info.
I might be wrong here, but i thought the side plates need torquing to about 18lbs and the gaskets provide the correct resistance. Just loosening the bolts to free up the axels is not the way to do it. Ask how i know... ::)
i'm sure someone who knows far more will be along soon
Don't worry, I've only loosened it to see if it would free up. The whole assembly is off the car at the moment and its gonna have to be dismantled now anyway. It probably did me a favour as I should have learned by now that short cuts never work.
