Title: Headlight Relay
Post by: kenny h on June 10, 2013, 09:21:59 AM
One of my headlights isn't working the one that does is stuck on high beam and the flasher doesn't work on the stalk, I am trying the relay as the first port of call to fix it hopefully it's the problem as I've checked the wiring as best I can. ???

So has anybody got one that they know works, if not no major problem as I can get one new just thought i'd ask here first ;-)up

Just checking... so are you saying that one of the headlights is working correctly (dipping etc.) but one is not? In which case I can't see it being the relay, but an issue with the wiring itself. Wires crossed at the headlight itself may be?

One headlight is working but it is stuck on high beam, no response at the stalk at all when you pull it :(

I am thinking it might be the relay as it did all work before my saga trying to wire up my savage hazard switch, after I gave up and opted to go back to a standard VW hazard switch which now all works fine but in the process I may have connected up something I shouldn't and blown the relay ::) :-[
Plus I also had a quick chat with Chris B about it Saturday and he said he had a similar thing on Em's and after going through everything it turned out it was the relay so going to try that first ;-)up

test your relay on a battery away from the wiring. listen to see if it clicks and just check the circuits swap.

touch terminal 30 and S in a circuit on the battery it should make it click and then test 56 to 56a and b to find which one is made then retouch 30 and S to click the relay back and check the other a or b is now made.

Well checked as per instructions courtesy of Snoopy and bugger my relay's only working ::) I know I should be glad but it's just that it now means it's wiring somewhere.... my favourite pastime :( :'(   ;D

you did it on the battery so on the buggy it is a simple job, relay switching and one headlamp live in, 2 out 1 to dip and 1 to main then they double up at the fuse box to 2 main 2 dip for the lights.

I would start at the bulb and check the earth is on the correct terminal.
from memory looking from the rear the left is earth, top and right are the main and dip terminals.
