Well I doubt it'll be that completed. It'll be on the road in a week or two, probably on a trailer again rather than it's own chassis.

All being well i will try and get another 1 1/2 coats of primer on as i have been filling and rubbing down, so lots of patches all over it atm and dust. If all is well after that then fingers crossed it may be done sunday ? but its got to dry off for atleast a week before moving...

i have a smaller one too ;-)up..engine :o
Hazel a standard lump is fine and reliable the 1835 82mm barrels take case machining to the limit and have thin skirts so can deform.
best rebuild the bottom picture as it is a twin port head so has dual relief valve oil system. the single port if 1500 or 1600 will give more torque.
I would strip them both and see what they are like wear wise and what is reusable.

I think you're right going to try the one in the bottom picture, will see what they're like stripped down. Fingers crossed.
i would say the bottom one as it looks like it it was never used in a car, but was a industrial motor.

Good shout. The oil filler would not allow for a dynamo or alternator to be filled........I think.
It's a type 3, the alternator is in a different position on a type t3? ???
The dynamo's on the type 3's are on the otherside.. Not many alternator kits around unless you make your own. A few rough guides on how to use an RX7 alternator fit though.

I did the first time around...
"the overall widest part is the two cushion sections either side of your legs.
this section is about 56cm / 22"
lower back section just above your bottom is about the same width.
depth wise front to back about 62cm deep."

22" is to wide unless you are going above tunnel height then they will not be central you need to aim for 19" ones or narrower.
theres normally new / seconds at stoneleigh going cheaper than list price so send your dad along.
Ideally I'd like to fit them in to sit on the floor pans.
There have been some good things at Stoneleigh in the past, I guess we'll see.

Getting a little bit impatient and starting to give up caring what seats I have :-\
Just thought I would nip out and take some photos with a tape measure included...
You can see my seats dont go all the way back, and hopefully it might help you to see the width they are.
The tape measure is 25mm ish away from the body at the side wall so might give an idea, as I guess the chassis
distance across from one side to the other will be pretty much the same on most tub's.
22" is almost half the width...... so probably a bit wide.
And Yes..... She is an unimaginable mess at the moment ::)

Yes, for me they are, and I thought a couple of photos with a tape measure in the frame may help.
All the seats that I have seen that will do most of what you want have had very slim bases.
Mine recline, tilt and slide too, to get these seats low, a flat bar can be welded across the seat bases
from runner to runner, as I have done on Sally's MX5's

I like you third brake light.
I have fitted one of these, will not flash unless the brakes have not been used for 5 seconds, so doesnt flash every time you brake, like in traffic etc, road legal, on a lot of the top end cars, tacky...but I like tacky ;D
not sure if it will stop anyone running into me though, they may be to distracted watching it flash ;D
at least I know it works as Chad did the wiring ;D ;-)up

Should hope they aren't driving if they suffer epilepsy fit's ???
I doubt it is flashing long enough to cause a fit. Also I'm not sure if the colour of the flash has any impact on triggering epilepsy.

it only flashes for a moment, and then reverts to a normal brake light, it only goes back to it if the brakes havent been used for 8 seconds I think it is..or something like that.
so when you are in traffic for examle, the first time you press on the brakes it will flash, but as you in traffic and on the brakes all the time, it stays on as a standard brake light..if you can follow that.
anyway, not meaning to side track hazels thread.
Flashing brake lights are OK and legal.
Epileptics that are triggered by flashing lights can't gain a driving license unfortunately (one of my good friends suffers with this).
Its no different to the flashing LED rear lights cyclist now favour so all good.

the brake light is one that I bought from car builders solutions so is E marked, its the flasher unit i bought separately ...you bloomin wired it up for me ;D

I think pretty much everything (except the engine) was trial fitted before it was painted ;)

hazel I think you really need two support bearings on your main column .as it is I only see your top one.
1 at the top and 1 at the bottom? ???
definatelly, your using a double nuckle joint lower section so its a must. as far up and as low as you can
another point is it must be on the main shaft not just on an outer sleeve unless you have bearings inside the sleeve tube to support the inner shaft.
There is one at the top and one at the bottom ??? don't ask me, I don't know what I'm doing.

Has it allowed you to spread out the bolt mountings to the pan so the energy isn't concentrated so much in one area?

The air filter may need binning in favour of something else, only maybe though, as you
might have to get/make an airbox that will have the right shape to slip in under there... :)

Eerm... :)
The back end of buggies is famous for not allowing much room for air filters, height wise, but its possible
to reduce the filters height by slicing it horizontally, and dropping the top of it down.
Or even using squidgy foam instead. When the engine fitted is going to be the final one, it maybe that a new air box
can be made up and a foam or a standard shape filter could be used inside it. A foam only one will be able to mould itself
to whatever's in the way..... Not a great solution I know, but an option.
This is yet another area that always causes a bit of a faff about, and some body shells are better than others. This is
a reminder for me.... As Sally has the same issue and has not run a filter since she built her buggy, so I have to sort an airbox
with a low enough profile to fit her Weber and possibly go sideways, there are loads of very flat air filters on the
shelves in Halfords that I have looked at, some with a height of 16mm...... ;-)up
My Manta Ray had the filter on the outside as there was so little height available under there, Stell uses the space up under
the rear number plate cover I made, and I trimmed the body a little to accommodate the filter as this problem
was with me too. :(

an aircleaner is a minor worry and the engine is not yours ;-)up
the single carb is well up out of the way unlike twins so just fit a fine wire mesh over it to stop bigger stuff going in.
I'm keeping an eye on you Snoopy ;D ;D GSF do a flat filter!. Will one of those fit in?

Rob my twin cam only has the coarse mesh outer on the pancake and nothing inside to stop small stuff and 182,000 miles with only 1 engine change due to wear.
Hazel just remodel the pancake you have to make it lower and cut one side off if needed to clear the tub it looks rusty anyway.

I had to do a similar bodge to my webber air filter to get it to fit - yours looks perfect to me ;-)up
mole grips will pass the mot aslong as it does not blow to much or is insecure ;-)up
Just thinking the mole grips needed a bit more polish :P

Had to cut my filters about and managed to get an ultra thin one for Mark's Doon.
Buggy getting there now. Like the exhaust mod. Done a few DIY exhausts myself over the years too with varying degrees of sucess. ;D

It's finally getting there!
I feel like I have done so much over the past couple of days, that when I do come in - I can't remember all of what I have done! ???
Last thing yesterday I saw there was a little puddle/leak coming from the back. Thought that about 4pm we were ready for a test drive but we didn't have any brakes - sorted now though ;D
This is the to do list I had for today:
Properly bolt the shell down, cut the end of the bolts of - underneath
Fix-up/tighten the headlights
Fasten in the passenger seat
Put the column switches on
Tighten column down
Bolt steering wheel in
Check tyre pressures
Check gear box
There were other things we found along the way (like the brakes) plus bits and pieces here and there that needed tightening...
Dad's putting in a temporary speedometer at the moment :P

Hi Hazel, It is getting there, well done!!!! I don't know what your MOT chap is like but you are supposed to have at least two mirrors!, one inside and an overtaking or wing mirror. With most buggies wing mirrors are a complete waste of time, as you only see your back wheel and wheel arch in them and you can not mount one on your screen. Perhaps your dad could temporally mount an old style motorbike mirror with the long arm, off your dash somewhere; if thats any help. Do you think it will be on the road for NEWS?.
I have been that busy haymaking the last two weeks that I have not done anything to my buggies! or got the tents out yet lol. I will have to find some time this week to check them over, my Rat's fan belt is totally shot but at least you only get a flat battery if it goes on my engine.
I know this is the wrong page but you are more likely to see it on here!! Could I still book breakfasts for four on the two mornings?

MOT it without the screen and don't bother with the wipers. You can put the screen on for the weekend, you won't need the wipers ;-)up (me and my big mouth ::) )

Hazel your mirror is simple only 1 required as you are pre 78 ish or something near.
no screen just one on the r/h side or a dash mounted one on a post with a crash helmet or shades and mask to protect your face.
keep it to a minimum if it is not fitted it is not testable.
you could book it into Ed's on friday and call in on the way to news for the mot as there will be others around should it need repair to pass.

Whats the problem? if you have a dynamo do a quick swap so you can use it. A fully charged battery will last a few days with out anything but the engine running.

New battery is dead after a bit of driving :(
Haven't got a dynamo...
when was the battery last charged up you should get 2 or 3 days use from it without lights n stuff on unless you do mega miles.
is it a built in regulator one or external have you rechecked the connections. is the light on with ignition and stays on when running.
Well done on the mot pass ;-)up hope you get the alternator sorted and start to enjoy the weather.

when was the battery last charged up you should get 2 or 3 days use from it without lights n stuff on unless you do mega miles.
is it a built in regulator one or external have you rechecked the connections. is the light on with ignition and stays on when running.
Battery hasn't been charged since it was bought. It's the built in regulator one... Yes the light is on with ignition and then goes out... (or did)
Update:
Checked the voltage on the battery and it's reading 24v
Also tried jump starting with another batter
Thinking it could be wiring or starter motor
At the moment Dad can't find his 'VW Alive and Well' book, so can anyone remember which 2 wires on the starter motor do you short out to get the starter motor to turn over? Is it the small spade and large live terminal?
Jump the large battery connection to the small spade that (usually) would be fed 12v from the ignition switch...
Release the jump when it fires up!

good news then,
you sure about the 24V at the battery if it has that much it is likely to explode as you drive it as it will boil and your liughts will be uber bright.
a fauly regulator giving occasional 16v meant me driving with lights and heater blower on to dissipate the excess until I got a new regulator.

Only showing 12v not its usual 14.5 don't know what's wrong yet need to look at it in the morning :(

Went out in the buggy yesterday, didn't mean for it to end up like a day out but it did. And was a mini adventure!

Then I went to visit Sarah and Dan, they fought over who was going out in it first and then ended up on a day long adventure with Sarah, we even made it through the Queensway tunnels!!! But not to far (hmm let's not talk about that) Got it started again and have to stop of at PMT (music shop in town) so Sarah could go to the loo... We didn't intend to be out that long, and we didn't even do that many miles - it's all experience and an adventure!

We're sort of packed and ready for our first buggy outing at NEWS2013!! And Plume tyres have my tyres at last! so going to get those "on the way".

So far so good with the buggy, still not finished though.
Just before the Manchester weekend (that I didn't make it to :( sorry Krug) Dad and I changed the front suspension to raise it up a bit. Unfortunately, the front wings will still occasionally hit when going over a bump. I may have filed away a bit of one of the wings on the tyres. Oops.
Dad has lost my fuel cap to go in the whole on the bonnet, typical! I bought that from a boat shop a very very very long time ago, and now it's hiding in his garage somewhere.
I gave it a wash the other day, all that swarf I had sitting in the foot-well is now gone. Got water everywhere. Took it out the next day and out it came from under the dash :-[ I think I need to pop in some plugs to let the water out...

Stand the buggy on a flat/level surface and pour a pint of water in each foot well.... :D :D :D :D :D :D
It will flow to the lowest point by itself.... Drill a 10mm hole in the deepest bit and it will drain...
The hole wont be anywhere sensible position wise but it will be in the place that will drain all the water...

I know what you mean, it IS the wrong colour but hey. There's always next time.
I only recently got the front tyres so they won't be changing any time soon, it is a bit low but it's ok.

Hopefully, I am picking up Mrs Child of the 70's old Beetle engine tomorrow. It's a 1500 and to be honest, I'm no fussed as long as it gets me going again! Who knows I might get one more drive in before next year! ???
That's great 1500 is a great strong engine ran one in the rail for a few years till we got the 1700T4
