This may help others but thought I would swap back to long rear torsion bars as they are a bit softer on take up. Now the rear end is 1303 and had long bars but on build 15 years ago short ones were fitted just in case of tyre clearance. The original spring plate were also heavily corroded so binned.
Getting older I thought ok back to long bars so have been collecting parts the new stainless steel end plates arrived so spring into life.
Anyway strip it out adjust new ones to ride a fraction higher bolt them up then insert trailing arm only to find the front bolt is 12 mm lower in the new spring plate than the one in the A arm so without a 25mm high hole in the plate noway and the arm has not enough material to drill lower. The kango irs has the lower bolt like the new plates so VW must have had a year change on bolt positions.
Something I have not encountered before so reassembled as it was and start looking for correct parts.

The answer came to me this morning now relaxed swap the spring plates side to side inverted and drill in a clear area.

Rule number 1, sleep on it. ;-)up ;-)up
;D well after a sleep a drill, mandrill and file the plates can now be fitted on the other side upside down. My trailing arms must be a one year only like Hughs 21mm gudgeon pins the other year meaning parts to fit are unobtainable

Finally had time to fit the long torsion bars in the Jas and thought ah photo time for differences the dirty one is the Kango 1302 irs that came with twin spring plates the clean one is the Jas which may have come with a single spring plate 15 years ago. One has two holes in the top the other the third hole is lower down so the twin plates have been swapped side to side and slotted to suit the bolt pattern. Thinking the irs 1302/3 fitted with single spring plates may be a different pattern as per the Jas although there does

not appear to be 2 after market bolt patterns available .
After the installation and relieving the front bolt hole so camber can be set we now have a better ride quality with softer initial suspension take up and the negative camber we had reduced to near zero. So pot holes no longer result in a bang. The 285/70 tyres give us about 10mm clearance on the spring plate tubes.

That's great work Keith although the 10mm clearance looks a tad close. I guess it will act to clean off large chunks of off road mud...
