Title: End float
Post by: hustler on June 06, 2020, 07:12:42 PM
Hi all.Friend of mine has problems with his engine so engines got to come out so I can see what's going on with the heads, think they may be cracked.Thing is it's got way to much end float. So can I get away with just reshimming or have I got to rebuild the bottom end to cure the end float problem. No nasty knocks or rattles from the bottom end.
Cheers
Roy

You can't shim out excess endfloat, it is set when built and when it develops on an older engine 9 times out of 10 it's the flywheel end main bearing moving in the case. If the case is otherwise good it'll need a line bore and o/s bearings.

As said thrust is worn on the case so machine thinner and fit oversize main bearings with a thicker thrust face, also worth getting the crank checked as that may need a regrind.

Thanks for that info guys.I thought that would be the case somehow.Guess I will have to strip it right down and see what wants doing.Might pay to get a recon short motor from somewhere reputable.

So,removed my mates engine as he was having bad misfire symptoms.Turns out it had a cracked head on number 4 cylinder. Also 2.7mm of crankshaft endfloat.Little bit to much me thinks.Managed to bag himself a 1641 camper engine today with Weber progressive carb, electronic ignition, new clutch, sports exhaust for not much money.Next job clean it up cos it's been standing a while, clean carb and see if she fires up.Fingers crossed he's back on the road by end of week.
