Title: Caster shims.
Post by: Ralphypants on April 14, 2019, 11:25:21 PM
Evening, trying to get my steering to return to centre easier after turning. I've been told it's the caster angle & I need to put in shims. The shims are about 6mm thick. I will fit 1 pair at a time & test. The question is, what would be the maximum number I could fit safely? I also realise the beam bolts will need replacing with longer ones at 12.9 tensile.

Colin.

Your problem will be the more you fit the greater the angle axle to frame head and the bolts will not align. One set should be enough. Make sure eveything else is free ball joint wise as tight joints can cause it.

I'd double check for excessive tightness in ball joints or kingpins and the column, steering damper etc first, stock camber is really only thrown out if the rear end is much higher than the front. If all is free then I'd say 2 shims behind each lower beam tube max.

On one buggy that I worked on with this problem there were no support brackets from the front beam to the body in front of the tank, the front body had sagged causing the bottom of the fuel tank to rub on the rubber steering disc.
