Hello, it started just over a year ago.
I bought my son a socket set for his 10th birthday, and something to use it on.... which was a 1300 twin port engine
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/76019C63-28E1-4A47-B732-C87DEA24054A_zpsxh8yvswf.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/76019C63-28E1-4A47-B732-C87DEA24054A_zpsxh8yvswf.jpg.html)
We stripped it right down, and replaced all the bearings, cleaning it up as we went
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/F8A304BF-BA9B-464E-885E-6E0489C75FEE_zpsdjirhofx.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/F8A304BF-BA9B-464E-885E-6E0489C75FEE_zpsdjirhofx.jpg.html)

Painted up the tinware, got it all together
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/FA2B052F-A046-4679-B623-392CD7EFA1D2_zpsznph2vct.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/FA2B052F-A046-4679-B623-392CD7EFA1D2_zpsznph2vct.jpg.html)
And got it running
(http://rs93.pbsrc.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/IMG_1087_zpsdzdzbo4z.mp4?w=160&h=160&fit=clip) (http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/IMG_1087_zpsdzdzbo4z.mp4)
About 6 months into the engine build (it's taken just under a year to build the engine as the project progresses at the pace of a 10 year old, and we really only get weekends) I came to be the owner of a fugitive 4
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/F9F58AA0-D831-4176-A7D4-6F5CC5007494_zpsfgx5gxb2.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/F9F58AA0-D831-4176-A7D4-6F5CC5007494_zpsfgx5gxb2.jpg.html)
Which we've stripped
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/BBE5324C-C2F8-487C-B62D-8E67C0B1C43A_zpsncsne1j0.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/BBE5324C-C2F8-487C-B62D-8E67C0B1C43A_zpsncsne1j0.jpg.html)
Had the frame blasted and painted
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/818E81F2-0F64-4584-8562-B7461ADEB98A_zps9mjzaoan.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/818E81F2-0F64-4584-8562-B7461ADEB98A_zps9mjzaoan.jpg.html)
Which is about where we are at the minute, It came with discs at the front (I've also acquired another for spares) so to supplement this I've got some 944 rears to go on. It's IRS anyway
We've cleaned up the gearbox as well actually
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/CAC32B7D-9210-46BE-BFE2-B3DB75A63844_zpsy3tiythf.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/CAC32B7D-9210-46BE-BFE2-B3DB75A63844_zpsy3tiythf.jpg.html)
More to follow, but that's a years progress..... so not too soon :D

That is just FANTASTIC !!!!!
Shall keep a keen eye on this build ;-)up ;-)up
Lovin' this thread already! ;-)up ;-)up ;-)up
Dont know if "Tom" is you or yr lad, but the time and knowledge and experience you are giving your lad is brilliant and will be with him forever, learning your way around cars tools and engines at his age is of huge benefit. We will all be following this one avidley i'm sure.👍
I love my 3 girls but really makes me wish I had a son, or at least a girl who was interested in cars. The look on his face is priceless
Big round of applause for both of you

I had two daughters ,but one presented us with a gorgeous grandson so he helps me on the buggy , very very lucky 👍
We got some 944 rear brakes to go on

Had a plan with some citric acid rust removal, and ended up with

Which we primed and then painted with brake enamel (should have got a spray can, but thought Tom might find this easier
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/9122E396-61CD-4BA2-AC4D-37D54585C7C3_zpsoymvsfow.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/9122E396-61CD-4BA2-AC4D-37D54585C7C3_zpsoymvsfow.jpg.html)
Need to clean the back plates and the suspension arms then build them up. Swapping over to 4x130 hubs as well, because we've got some wheels for the back
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/AA7AFB77-526E-484F-B4BB-83CDC7D2549F_zpsnz0jhn5s.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/AA7AFB77-526E-484F-B4BB-83CDC7D2549F_zpsnz0jhn5s.jpg.html)
John
Went to Stonor Park, got a few bits including a pair of front calipers for £30.... we've got 2 pairs of front calipers but they both need new pistons and seals, these ones were a bit grotty but underneath the pistons and seals looked good, so I talked him down to the £30 and brought them home
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/9E938554-5407-4844-8969-3181F2289F97_zpsh1eftxft.png) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/9E938554-5407-4844-8969-3181F2289F97_zpsh1eftxft.png.html)
We stripped them out, pistons popped with a footpump, and are all good
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/E4E4EA0F-C66B-45A2-B264-8B8B06CFE146_zpssa33p6xu.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/E4E4EA0F-C66B-45A2-B264-8B8B06CFE146_zpssa33p6xu.jpg.html)
So we got lucky!!
Once they were stripped, we dropped them in the citric acid bucket and agitated them a bit, but they came up really tidy. They are obviously pattern parts as the castings are a lot rougher than the other sets, but once painted they'll be fine.
The rears we painted up the other day looked terrible (the Halfords brake enamel wasn't very hard and it had run in places as it's so thin) so they have been stripped again and dunked again.
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/56C225E2-B20F-457A-B207-BCD54CE08C72_zpshsf6krga.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/56C225E2-B20F-457A-B207-BCD54CE08C72_zpshsf6krga.jpg.html)
Then We gave them all a coat of primer and then a mate is going to paint them properly for us!
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/1CDD49EF-09B1-4DFA-96DF-9FE693A445BB_zpsmqycpaim.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/1CDD49EF-09B1-4DFA-96DF-9FE693A445BB_zpsmqycpaim.jpg.html)
We removed the back drums... surprisingly for this vehicle, someone has actually spent out on something!
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/939C0B4A-36C9-435A-B750-1B2D34776CCC_zpslkrhcze8.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/939C0B4A-36C9-435A-B750-1B2D34776CCC_zpslkrhcze8.jpg.html)
Then cleaned up and primed the IRS arms
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/483E0DBB-EEB2-49D5-A2C6-1BBC5C5CF1FD_zpswzalwn1m.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/483E0DBB-EEB2-49D5-A2C6-1BBC5C5CF1FD_zpswzalwn1m.jpg.html)

Need to get some black paint now!
So then started cleaning up the 944 back plates
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/DB049007-1FEB-464D-867E-DA9E37B00028_zpsyzhwiat4.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/DB049007-1FEB-464D-867E-DA9E37B00028_zpsyzhwiat4.jpg.html)

I'd take the driveshafts out and give it all a thorough clean, inspection and then service, just for peace of mind.
Yeah, we will.... just at the mo we don't seem to have spline tools (think the garage pixies have stolen them!)
will be able to strip and clean the inner cv joints, note how they come apart because they only assemble one way correctly and work freely through out the angular range.
We've got a second set of arms which we will get shotblasted later and then we can build them up to swap over at a later date (a few years down the road)
The plan is to get it on the road in about a years time (hopefully) and do a bit of a shakedown in it, then pull it apart for powder coating and sorting the paint etc.
The grease in these ones is a bit like toffee, so will clean them out and have a good look at them when the pixies have finished with the tools :)
Looking good mate can't wait to see your progress 😀👍
Nice. You have the one with the sensible head clearance! Going to have to modify mine or get a few vertebrae removed...
Do you have a close up of how the front mudguard stays are mounted to the backing plate please. Just about to fabricate something and looking for existing ideas.

They are badly mounted on the existing spindles, so will have to sort something else too....
The stays are welded on and you can't undo the nuts on the joints because of the stays ::)
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/683DA4D5-8AD2-4F19-A641-08302FF01F1F_zpsiz50ikvk.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/683DA4D5-8AD2-4F19-A641-08302FF01F1F_zpsiz50ikvk.jpg.html)
If you've got anything better than that (can't imagine it's too hard!) I'm interested in yours! :)
Well that gives me an idea... of what not to do ::)
Making mine in the next few days so I'll post. Which reminds me I must update my build on here!
I welded tubing to the frame out to the wheels and bolted through the wings to the tubing with plenty of off-road travel clearance :D.
If you want the wings close to the tyres the other option is long through bolts on the hub then brackets to support the tubing that supports the wings.
Don't crush the tubing to get a flat surface to secure to as this causes metal fatigue at the crush point.
This causes the wing to come of at 65mph on the motorway and strike the driver in the head causing the rail to head for the nearest embankment. (Don't ask. It still gives me nightmares now.)
That sounds scary!
I have the hi-lift mudguards at the moment
(http://i.imgur.com/UfVBtRu.jpg)
and I hate them so will be doing the extended nuts through the backing plate into a bracket thing.
In fact if Tom likes the high mudguard look I have the support frames ready made with u-bolts off mine - you are welcome to them.
Only pic I could find
(http://i.imgur.com/k9HHpaj.jpg)
Aaah!!! We are going for close fitting guards too :( Always seems a shame to turn down pre-made stuff
But we'll be interested to see some photos of your solution
John
I started this a few days ago and what a can of worms! Came up with a great solution .... then turned the wheel full lock. ::) Back to the drawing board!
So this is Mk 2 - (well 2.5 as you can see from the chopped tack weld!) Much easier if you can just drill the guard holes to fit the steel, but as they are already there a bit more accuracy required.
I will finish this later but at the moment it works. Had to chop a little off the rear inner guard edge as it fouls the body on full lock/full extension.
So:
Replace 2 x aft backplate bolts with 60mm M10's (think they are 60mm will check when I replace them
Add 2 x M10 Nuts as spacers
Drilled 6mm x 25mm flat plate
Box is 20mm x 3mm
Guard plates are 3mm x 25mm vice bent to fit, sitting on 6mm neoprene
When its finished the guard plate will be bent over the box and welded to both cap and add strength

Not for us..... we are tidying up bits and scratching our heads still :D
We did a bit of machining,
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/2D91C612-EE0E-4688-A419-D87081AE0E46_zpsqsbt1q6u.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/2D91C612-EE0E-4688-A419-D87081AE0E46_zpsqsbt1q6u.jpg.html)
Made some spacers and machines the type 3 hubs
(http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l46/johnr1100s/fugitive/60E346CF-5580-4E98-8B98-94E1AE1E42F4_zps03swjprg.jpg) (http://s93.photobucket.com/user/johnr1100s/media/fugitive/60E346CF-5580-4E98-8B98-94E1AE1E42F4_zps03swjprg.jpg.html)
Made a jig to redrill the discs

Just waiting to get the calipers back, and we can refit them, next is the beam
(Haven't done the joints yet, doing a few big bits to keep Tom interested)
Teaching the lad some serious stuff. Great to see :D
Not updated for a bit, will have to sort the photobucket photos out,
But we rebuilt the front beam, it's had a bit of welding done so it's. It perfect, but it's pretty tidy now and has all new joints etc
(http://i.imgur.com/axvqFcv.jpg)
We also cleaned up the steering box and arms, and replaced the joints
(http://i.imgur.com/nTJY4wM.jpg)
We primed up the irs spring plates, but have found out we can swap to swingarm parts..... so are on the lookout for some bits
We laid out some bits on the lawn and made engine noises :)
Got some cheap LED highlights, so will see how they go
(http://i.imgur.com/iNLaWQH.jpg)
And some LED tail lights
(http://i.imgur.com/lEb6VpL.jpg)
Things are moving forward slowly.... got some time booked with fabricator at the end of September, so will tickle along until then

You'll get a better ride with the IRS bits, so I'd keep them. I've modified my rear suspension to be able to use the longer torsion bars.
We've been chipping away still
Recently got some seat pans welded into the floor (so we can use seat sliders, made them deeper than needed in case we change seats)
Bolted the running gear in, and now it is rolling, we did have a problem as we appear to have pre 67 spindles so had the wrong track rod ends
(http://i.imgur.com/4utE17E.jpg)
But now it is steering and turning!
We've carried on plodding away,
Sorted some back tyres for the slot mags
(https://i.imgur.com/6m6liE3.jpg)
Fitted a floor, mounted the seats and fuel tank, we've rebuilt the brakes and they are ready once we've sorted the brakelines.
We've had a play about with the mudguards and positions for the headlights too....
So it is moving forwards slowly

Merry Christmas, have a happy new year!! 8) :)
Nothing the matter with a slow build progress is still being made.
We knackered a wheel bearing, not sure if we overtightened, undergreased or (because no dust caps) it got grit or swarf in it.
But in doing so we damaged a spindle, we got hold of another pair, cleaned them up and this weekend fitted them,
(https://i.imgur.com/50xJLyv.jpg)
Not sure how to attach video... but we did a time lapse
https://youtu.be/UbDhjRSI3c0 (https://youtu.be/UbDhjRSI3c0)
When you pack a bearing go from one side apply a dab of grease then push it through with a finger repeat as required until grease comes out the other side all around the bearing.
Nearly got the brakes sorted (but I got one of the hoses made with a male instead of female End)
Then bolted the engine in

Starting to look like a real buggy now!

Looking great!
Go for it👍 Nothing like a little helper 🤛👍👍💋
Not been the weather to get too much done, but have been chipping away
Bolted the side panels on, using motorcycle fairing fittings
Had got a new steering column machined up, sleeved into a collapsible section then to a pillow block and a detachable boss
(https://i.imgur.com/cdqPm3h.jpg)
Started putting some wiring in, and looking at clutch and throttle cables
Then we got hold of some scruffy slots for the front
(https://i.imgur.com/zEoml4W.jpg)
Which we've given a polish, and now look like this, they are a long way from perfect.... but look a lot better
(https://i.imgur.com/uh7z0Fs.jpg)
We got tyres fitted onto the front slots
Mounted the battery box
(https://i.imgur.com/vJo4NBk.jpg)
Modified the tube that runs under the dash
(https://i.imgur.com/QG5huBl.jpg)
So we can fit a different speedo, we got an acewell one
(https://i.imgur.com/WvQzaKO.jpg)
And then today we've made an ally dash panel
(https://i.imgur.com/0lrfK72.jpg)
We've made a bracket for the slave cylinder
(https://i.imgur.com/AJdl5JK.jpg)
And fitted that
(https://i.imgur.com/dTXEw4Q.jpg)
Modified the cable pedal to work with a master cylinder
(https://i.imgur.com/JnXYwTB.jpg)
Fitted the front slots, had to get some spacers... but not too worried about the track as the rear is 25mm wider since we fitted the 944 discs anyway
(https://i.imgur.com/NI6kDEI.jpg)
Think that's up to date again
(https://i.imgur.com/J6mFWEh.jpg)
Oh, we've also fitted a fibre flare led
(https://i.imgur.com/8EAu4cq.jpg)

Where did you get the bearing you used for the steering column?
Quote from: FireDancer on March 28, 2018, 02:18:04 PM
Where did you get the bearing you used for the steering column?
It's a 20mm pillow block bearing, I think in the end I got it from amazon
We got the steering column made to work with it, the collapsible tube is 22 o/d and 15 I/d, pillow block is 20 and steering wheel boss is 19
So the column is 15 and fits into the collapsible tube, then 22 to match the diameter, then steps down for pillow block (this should also stop the steering column pushing through the bearing in worst case scenario) and then steps down again for the steering wheel boss
Hope that makes some sense
Thank you, that's a great help. I have an aftermarket column with a couple of these bearings, but need another for a UJ section. I didn't know what they were called to search for them! Thanks. 8)
you have been busy, good work! ;-)up
Made up some temporary wiring today
(https://i.imgur.com/BuXUD1t.jpg)
And wired up the acewell speedo, starter motor, regulator and the engine
And then went for a drive
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JvtMmCJehYY
It's not running great, seems to be missing on no 4, but spark is good. It's getting fuel... so needs a bit more investigation (compression tester was at home and wife was asleep)
It's not charging either, so need a new regulator, but it drives!! :D
Not charging it may just need the dynamo polarising as it has been stood around.

Oh, will try that... as I don't know how long it's been unused for (but at least 2 years)
Is this right?
That will do it also after 2 years check the commutator is clean and the brushes are not stuck away from it.
;-)up
Sorted the rough running. We changed the inlet rubbers and gaskets and that seemed to sort it.
Adjusted the distributor but timing light has stopped working properly.
But it was running better and idling now, so Tom had a drive
https://youtu.be/64lFkogOCN4
Next up, carry on with wiring and sort the lights
Lucky lad, looks like fun!
Sorted the dash
(https://i.imgur.com/H5dKIGk.jpg)
Wired headlights
(https://i.imgur.com/dVNUQFB.jpg)
Made some rear light brackets
(https://i.imgur.com/NrbEPs6.jpg)
And fitted
(https://i.imgur.com/VTNsFPJ.jpg)
Fitted the lights
(https://i.imgur.com/bgl2Gl7.jpg)
Started to repair the glassfibre

And then it blooming rained :(
Looking good

Good to see Young Tom doing the welding and stuff the PC H&S brigade would be up in arms ;-)up
I bet the young lad is having an absolute riot working on this. Been following it for a while and can't wait to see it done.
We remade the rear light brackets, with just single lights, will fit reserve and fog somewhere else
(https://i.imgur.com/CrEEx7K.jpg)
(Also fitted pulley cover)
Have been playing with handbrake and wiring up lights today
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8PfydoW9974
Been carrying on with the wiring,
Fitted some harnesses
(https://i.imgur.com/ZMQuhPp.jpg)
And sorting the handbrake, we've swapped the 944 cables, so they are now both short cables and welded a mount to terminate them
(https://i.imgur.com/PJgReBR.jpg)
Fitted a handbrake lever, it's from a Ford.
Then connected the cables to the lever with a turnbuckle and stainless catenary cable
(https://i.imgur.com/twubUn7.jpg)
And it works, can lock the handbrake in about 4 clicks, I got Tom and wife to use the handbrake and they both can (Tom found it harder, but he's 12) and it doesn't interfere with anything else....
So it seems a bit too easy, would it be acceptable like that, or do I need to make linkages instead of the catenary cable?
Only problem I can see is if the link cable fails you lose the hanbrake at both wheels.
Mr MOT tester will not pass cable clamps, either make a solid rod assembly with pins or a steel plate. if you want to keep a cable you will need crimped ends and forked end fittings with pins.
Thanks ;-)up
Will make a rod assembly then, that also overcomes the problem of losing handbrake if the cable breaks
Posr 65 beetles loose the hand brake if one cable goes there is no requirement for a fail safe handbrake if one side goes..
Not looking at it from a legal point, more of common sense.
I've had a cable end part company on a late bias bar type handbrake and it still worked to a fashion but not as good. I suppose it depends on the wear on the pivot and locating dimple.
The standard Porsche 944 cable is a single long cable from the lever to one brake, with a linkage and short cable to the other side, so if that snapped on the long cable you'd lose the handbrake.
As said, if the clamps on the link cable are a no-no then by changing to some fixed links that solves that, but if I use 2 links I'd still retain some functionality if a cable broke, it wouldn't be as good as the towbar would move to the side so would need a longer pull... but would probably still work.
TBH even if the clamps would pass the MOT, if there is a better way of doing it, then we will go that way.... it's all about the learning (mostly for Tom.... but quite a bit for me too) :)
Did this as a start, will make something prettier, but need m6 one end and m8 at the other
Just a thought but 2 turnbuckles in place of the link rods and a long eyebolt in place of the turnbuckle may be a better option as it would give you adjustment on both sides to keep it in balance.
You can get rigging turnbuckles with a clevis fitting on 1 end that would attach direct to the 944 cable ends.
Thanks,
someone pointed out I need locknuts on the turnbuckle as well, so I've just ordered some bits to pretty much do that :)
Will run a threaded rod back from handbrake to a block, then a turnbuckle rod with a rod end one end and a clevis the other
Fitted the fuse and relay boxes tonight
(https://i.imgur.com/sH5OlUY.jpg)
Did some wiring
(https://i.imgur.com/VSY8pBw.jpg)
And got some lights on the switches
(https://i.imgur.com/g83jOUl.jpg)
We tidied the handbrake linkages up
(https://i.imgur.com/AHlBPIb.jpg)
Then we've been wiring
(https://i.imgur.com/MtWyCwD.jpg)
Fitted a battery clamp
(https://i.imgur.com/L7rjXvm.jpg)
And have been working on the engine cradle

Bit of fettling still to do, and fit brackets for number plate and reversing/fog light
Been tinkering away,
This is the end result....

Took the Fug for its MOT
(https://i.imgur.com/DmfvFIa.jpg)
And it failed :(
I broke the dipped beam switch (it wouldn't latch on, so I reached behind the dash to see if it had moved and snapped it off! )
And one of the dampers was leaking.... typical, we replaced the fronts but the rears were spax and looked ok, just a bit rusty. So we gave them a cosmetic tidy up....
A pair of dampers ordered anyway!!
A bit keen on the dampers unless they did not stop it bouncing you can pass with a light oil mist on them still only 2 jobs and easily fixed. ;-)up

Not in my book it didn`t - If you and your son can build a road going car with only 2 fairly minor things to contend with, I think that is a massive achievement
Well done ;-)up
Not bad considering, but may I ask something, are 'mudguards' not on the MOT list anymore ? ???

One of them was dripping oil, must have recently blown the seal (but it's not been driven until recently)
It was a fair cop I thought :)
MOT guy was really good and talked to me and Tom whilst he was testing, showed us what he was doing...
It was the last test booked for the day, but we were there well over an hour!

Strangely, no, not part of the test for class 4.
If it was a quad, then there is a section on mudguards...
Cars doesn't have that section in the test, so it will pass the MOT even though it fails C&U.... so can pass MOT, drive 100m and get stopped by a copper who could then prohibit it from being driven
it'll be getting mudguards anyway but the fabricator who is doing the work is right on the road in the next village, so this is much much easier than leaving it on a trailer all day outside his unit on the road, or bending tubes, taking away checking, returning etc
We got passed by a fenderless V8 ford rat rod on the M6 on the way down from finding the haggii and he is not alone, the chance of being pulled is slim these days and you see many motors with illegal number plates in daily use with no problems.
New dampers, and a pass!!!!
Rear visibility is bad, so went and picked a rollcage rear view mirror up
(https://i.imgur.com/bVEtZ0j.jpg)
But it seems to misfire a bit as it warms up, so need to investigate that.... and sort some tax (it's a q, so not free :( )

As above mudguards are C&U not MOT. They are designed to stop spray and debris getting thrown up - the gray area is if its dry then there is no spray, therefore they are not required. ;-)up
Have heard some fenderless hot-rodders carry cycle fenders that can be quickly bolted on - "sorry officer - I was at a show and took them off - I'll bolt them on now...."
However - I heard a story (not sure how much truth is in it) where a rodder got stopped, used the line above, bolted his cycle fenders on then the police booked him as they were far too small / completely useless...
Took it to a local show today
(https://i.imgur.com/IeeE61F.jpg)
Also saw a lovely flake buggy
(https://i.imgur.com/hhbK65P.jpg)
We've done about 40 miles now, but of tightening up, but ok at the minute :)
We've been driving it about, and debugging it ( :D)
Bug with the harnesses it isn't that easy to use the switches on the dashboard
So we've fitted a summit raptor, which has really tidied the dash up,
(https://i.imgur.com/3N6yykr.jpg)
Few bits left to finish off, then try it out
the problem with full harness belts is limited movement the nice new wheel will make life easier.

I got pulled for tyre 3" outside the body line years ago in my buggy on the A3, best to let them do their job and :-X , I got a bit >:( and paid the price-£30! As he had a 1927? ::) That had to have them and me saying a 54 did not ;) was not going to work >:(,, He was going to have me for the Blue Streaks and no! front reg plate But I did say I hit a rabbit :) "It too high up for a rabbit" ??? It must have been a hare :D ,,If it is a clean car and you do not drive like a dick you are ok
Fitted some mudguards,
Fronts use a bit of angle that replaces the thick camber washer....
So can be removed pretty quickly
(https://i.imgur.com/h6dISQI.jpg)
Rears aren't quite as well thought out at the minute
Modified some tube I had lying around (was the old side bars)
And fixed to the frame, so not close fitting at the mo
(https://i.imgur.com/URYxDqR.jpg)
It a bit of finishing off after holiday and they'll look alright for the rest of this season
(https://i.imgur.com/zpiNhZP.jpg)
Great idea on the front mudguard stays... but I fear they will go the same as mine!
See my fab design here http://www.beachbuggy.info/index.php/topic,9103.msg106862.html#msg106862
Then my mate with the Sandrail said - "that will break... right there"
and less than 40 miles later ....
http://www.beachbuggy.info/index.php/topic,9103.msg112583.html#msg112583
:o
Well..... they are easy to remove :-[
I guess we'll try them and keep an eye on them, as away next week, will have a mad busy week on return then a week to do any fettling before the Gathering
Didn't really expect to get it right first time
Few bits done, bit strange trying to finish things on it when it's far from finished anyway
But, hopefully we are all ready for the Gathering next weekend
(https://i.imgur.com/AOJ33lz.jpg)
Posted a bit of this in the events section, but I'll post it here too....
Took the Fug to the Retro Rides Gathering at Shelsley Walsh
About 80 miles there, which we did on the Friday with a lunch stop en-route at a National Trust house, and then onto a cottage near Stourport.
Saturday, we loaded up with camping gear and drove the last few miles to the event
(https://i.imgur.com/52EzRIi.jpg)
We got to drive the hillclimb on the Sunday morning
(https://i.imgur.com/zpoTnMe.jpg)
https://i.imgur.com/J9HgRjq.mp4 (https://i.imgur.com/J9HgRjq.mp4)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tt3Vx2u1R3w&app=desktop (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tt3Vx2u1R3w&app=desktop)
And then drive home, we did the return in one hit, though the M40 wasn't the natural territory for it :)
We've done 350 miles now, and have a few things to do;
Oil change
Reindex the rear torsion bars (sat very close to the bumpstops)
Tidy up the wiring a bit
Make proper mounts for the rear guards
Modify the front guard supports as they hit the trailing arm on full lock
Start making moulds for the panels
Look into fitting some more comfortable seats
And after going up the hill, fit 1600 barrels and pistons, an AMR500 :D
And then keep doing bits and pieces... eventually get it painted
It didn't miss a beat at all, and we had 1 screw come lose, holding a p clip for the fuel pipe (but hadn't fallen out so just needed tightening)
good to meet you and see an air cooled running up the hill ;-)up
Not driven the Fug much since it's gone cold, we did get to VW Action
(https://i.imgur.com/jnAxhYU.jpg)
And have been doing bits to it since
34ict carbs
(https://i.imgur.com/rtxkHjT.jpg)
Changed the rocker covers
(https://i.imgur.com/svBwdAK.jpg)
New plug leads
(https://i.imgur.com/grNK7EX.jpg)
And did an oil change, found there wasn't much oil in the heads, so fitted new pushrods too, could blow them through but couldn't see through them
(https://i.imgur.com/VyQSTQu.jpg)
Need to get out for a drive and then check we have wet rocker covers
Back in December we acquired another engine
(https://i.imgur.com/gARedzC.jpg)
Wasn't quite sure what we had, but turns out it's a a really good motor;
Balanced 78mm crank
Bug pack h-beam rods
90.5 Mahle pistons and barrels
Engle fk87 can
1:4 rockers
JMR type 3 ported heads
44idf Webers
Deep sump
Lightened flywheel
Stage 1 clutch
Full flow filter
Turns out it was run a long time back in a buggy called Starbug
(https://i.imgur.com/3BerkrJ.jpg)
Then put under a bench and left for 12 years.
We stripped it and all it really needed was freshening up.
So we've rebuilt it with new bearings, and replaced the cam with a tamer Fk8.
Fitted new tinware and a few other bits
And now have it nearly built up
(https://i.imgur.com/3DWiYuj.jpg)
Still got bits to sort, exhaust etc
But hoping to run the cam in soon and the fit the motor in the summer
A good find, Star Bug was used for drag racing years ago.

Yeah, by Mike Lewendon. Had a chat to him on Facebook
He said he ran 12.4 at 110mph
That's pretty quick!

That's pretty quick!
We've swapped the cam, and it'll be running filters and silencers so will hopefully be a bit tamer
He did say it'd pull 10k rpm in burn out on the old cam
Also if anyone sees PKE 619G then he'd like to buy it back :)
Thought I should update this a bit.
We spent a while rebuilding the 2007cc engine.
Rebuild was pretty much a bearing refresh as everything was good but with worn bearings, we did fit a FK8 cam though.
I'd got hold of a spare set of panels, they were rough but we swapped the bonnet over so we can have a go at tidying up the other one. Fitted this one with aerocatches to make it easier to remove.
We also applied some vinyls to the side panels.
We went to Goodwood for a show and got there and back without major incident (we did get wet though)
Straight after the weekend away, took it for its MOT and it flew straight through with no issues (MOT tester particularly liked being able to walk round and check the lights with the steering wheel in his had to check lights etc)
We then fitted the big engine, and have been sorting out all the teething issues.
We had a problem at the Gathering with crankcase pressure and a leak from the flywheel oil seal, but seem to have sorted that this weekend
