Seems there is a bit of confusion over this Glympse App, Well last night I downloaded it and had a play, and Oh My Word! why have we not had something like this before, as it can save a lot of confusion and directions when we are all meeting up places.

Ok, its a FREE App for your phone that uses the GPRS data to know where you are located, and will plot your position on a map. If you are trying to meet up with someone, then you can send them a Glypse Request, and when they reply, both of you are seen on the map. The map is private, and can only be used by the two of you. You select how long you want to be shown on the map (maximum 4 Hours) and after that it expires. Whilst this may be great for trying to track down someone who is late, it doesn`t really lend itself to us that well if used like this.

However, and this bit is clever, you can set up a group viewing, although for some reason Glympse calls it a TAG, and if you enter the name of the Group into the TAG settings, ie: beachbuggyinfo  then everyone who is logged in can see exactly where each other is. No more getting lost in a convoy, no more manic phone calls for directions, its all on your phone screen for all to view.

You can only be logged in for a maximum of 4 Hours, so at the end of that time, if you are still lost it would be a case of logging out and logging in again. Mobile data useage can be described as virtually minimal, and like using your phone sat nav, as long as you are looking at a map, you can use it for hours and hours at a time without racking up data penalties - that only ever seems to happen if you constantly look at high detailed satellite imaging, as I guess there is a lot more to download.

Roadrunner has set up a group name for us of  beachbuggyinfo   so if you want to log into that as a TAG then you can see all of those that are playing on that day.

As an aside, because the group is public, and viewed by everyone, it can also be seen on a home PC without the need for any downloads - all you need is the Group TAG name.


For instance, Chad is now in a group called pierpressure  and if you are meeting up with him as part of this trip, then simply log in using pierpressure as the TAG name in the menu.  For those of us at home, wondering how he is getting on, then cut and paste this into your browser window, as it will give a live update of where he is

And if downloading the App, and you want to play to see yourself on a map, and how it works, then why not use the beachbuggyinfo   group name, and you can check your progress on a home PC by typing in http://glympse.com/!beachbuggyinfo  The best way to learn this App is to play about with it, and it is fairly easy to use after the first 10 minutes or so.

Chads location will be helpful next Sunday when I plan to join up with PierPressure at Weston or Burnham. With Glympse I'll know which one I can still catch him at.

On the beachbuggyinfo it shows Gordon's tag as '77km/h' and yours as 'expired' so I assume this means Gordon is within the 50mph speed limit and you are sitting down having a tea break !

Interesting. I have a dash cam on my daily and slightly worry that it contains info that would demonstrate a casual disregard for close control of speed.

Hugh, to my knowledge, dash cams don't store telemetry data. Although if you have a sat nav built in to a car these most definitely do store data that can be retrieved after a crash.

Thanks Shaggy. I only have the dash cam as a long term back up as several people have told me stories of being wrongly blamed for accidents. However I know my dash cam records the location via GPS and shows the speed (even if it didn't the GPS and time on it would give the police enough to calculate speed). The few times I've watch clips from it the 'sense' of speed seems far more dramatic when viewed on the computer screen than when actually doing the driving.

I have also been told that after motorway accidents the police have been known to go along the held up traffic looking for dash cams to gain evidence - in such a scenario I wouldn't feel relaxed about the police looking over my own driving record !

They must be the high end ones then as mine only cost about £30. I checked the data that uploads on the card and other than date and time mine has nothing

Interesting. If the police were super keen they could use the time readings and a couple of landmarks to calculate your speed.

But it looks like you can now join this Glympse app for free and have your phone act as a GPS speed sensor !

on a side note, dous annybody know how to hotwire a ferry? the wait is killing me.... good job you lot travel togeter to kill the time.

had a play with the app and as Dave said looks like this could be useful.  Going to play a bit more and work out more ...... it would have been great when we went to Germany for IBW and are trying to meet up on route.

Glmpse was a real saviour today, due to route miscalculations (no names no blame Chad) we nearly missed them. Gllympse let us chase them down and end up 2 cars behind at Cromer pier

i have no proof of this but someone did a bit of an blast on the beatch at around 4 ish, glimps captured that aswell....

if your police force is as capble as ours, you need not worry about the long arm of the law finding your data.

i was comming in at 20:15 local on the holandica. man was that boring, i did absolutley nothing not even a lee to make fun of.

next year im taking the night boat like a sane person...
