Hi all

Could do with a bit of advice.

The steering box on Recon as excessive play, keeps wanting to visit the ditch, not worried which side of the road. It is a king pin box. I have a ball joint box but of course the track rods are a different size.

Are the boxes the same with different size holes in the bottom. If so can I swap the arms and use the other box.

Thanks

Rich

Hey mate, very early linkpin boxes I'm not sure on, but I've definitely got later Pittman arms with either small or large trackrod holes that will interchange.
Biggest problem is getting a good box. When I did Matt's prowler the 'new' box from gsf had twice the play of the old one we were replacing.
With that big arse motor, it may be time for rack and pinion  ;)
The older I get, the better I was.

I have a box of that old Fug frame that appears to have very little play but is wrong track rod ends. Wondering if I leave the arm in place and mate the box to it. Can't see why not but you know me.

Think I have the fuel problem sorted just need to make a few alterations. Tried it this morning and with a proper fuel supply to the engine its manic. It launches itself at the horizon and just won't quit.
At 70 with this steering I had to back off has we were headed for disaster and I was still in 3rd gear. Scary.

You may find it easier to pop the track rod ends and swap the Pittman arm in the vice.
They go one of two ways, drop off or much struggling.

It may be easier to swap the inner track rod ends for later, larger ones.

Very early (read very rare) boxes have the same size out shaft as the late 1's but the 'middle' oil filled boxes have a larger out shaft so the Pitman arms won't fit.  You can use a late box and arm but re drill the arm to take bump-steer bushes fitted the wrong way up to fit early track rod ends though.

If column length is critical the modern boxes are also shorter from the groove for the coupling bolt to the box.

to fit early arms on a ball joint box you need to use a 67 pitman arm, very hard to find these days. :-\
