Quick question on my front bearings.   I recently swapped to discs so have new bearings / grease etc.   Today I took the buggy for an MOT and have quite a friendly MOT man that likes VWs.  He suggested the fronts need tightening up just a tad.  But I am a bit confused as I set them spot on and have literally done less then 5 miles. In fact I took a while to read up on this and spent quite a bit of time messing with feeler gauges.

Could this be down to being new and not quite seated with all that new grease ?  Obviously not a big job and I can sort that this weekend, but curious as to why this happened.

Mot wheel bearing play is down to the testers opinion but with disc brKes it can make for excessive brake pedal travel on the first push of the pedal. Just nip them up a fraction

In my experience, its more down to the MOT examiner overlooking the fact that it is a 50 year old car, and tolerances were a little looser back then.

I get the same every year - this year was different with my rears, as they literally rattle !   ::)

I have always found with new bearings, not just VW, that you fit them and adjust, do a few miles and they often need nipping, another 50 or so and they often need another check

When I check/do mine, I just jack the front of the bug to get the wheels off the ground and then tighten the split nut until
I can feel just a little free play (slight rocking / clearance) in the rim whilst rocking the tire at the top and bottom...
