Hi Mike M... like you, I was more than a bit risk-averse when looking for the right buggy, I want to drive it, enjoy it and have fun not argue about it with VOSA so for me, the right wording on the V5 was absolutely fundamental  ;-)up

And if he still has the mots from pre1998 (I think) stating a buggy on it, then it's sorted with no issue of sva etc.

I know this is probably my a stupid question, but there's a buggy came up as vw beetle convertible, take it that's still a bad idea as it's not a bug she'll as it's a sidewinder??

Cheers

As there are no definitive rules, the best advice is to think logically. There is no question that we are bound by legislation to register our vehicles as accurately as we can - however, DVLA do not have that many options to choose from.

Beach Buggy, or the correct name of the kit itself is the holy grail of model names.   ;-)up

Saloon, if you have a hard roof is technically correct, but only if the roof is permanently fitted

Convertible is regarded as generally quite good, as it applies to a generic vehicle with either roof up or down   8)

Beetle ?  Well, again, technically whilst it may be based on one, the alterations mean its not always recognised as one - hence debateable   :-\

At the end of the day, this is only generally called into question if you make yourself "noticed" and they look closer at your vehicle for an inspection. Should you get pulled over as "Cor, look at that" then you are generally ok, but if you have had reason to be pulled over and the first words are "is this your vehicle" then they may start a series of questions.

Thanks dave, that's pretty much what I was thinking. The buggy is £9k, actually a bit over budget, so not something I want to risk

Just to add to the list - my log book states "VW Beetle Sports"

It was inspected by VOSA (its LWB so doesn't need SVA / IVA / whatever its called as the chassis is unmodified), they took pictures and sent the paperwork back to DVLA - and thats what DVLA sent back

Thanks Paul, I'll keep looking, maybe speak to the dealer selling the buggy, as I would have thought theres some comeback on buying from a car dealer (or maybe I'm just naive??)

Cheers
