Decided to get back to the sandrail,  made a to do list, brakes, rear suspension,  wiring, and lots of odds and ends.
Started by buying  a land rover steering rack
So can do a cheap rack conversion




Looks hopeful,  will need to pull the worn steering box out and start fabrication on some mounts

It is a power rack but first mod is to remove the hydraulics so it operates as a manual rack

It's a freelander rack so has the steering arms mounted in the middle like the popular polo rack  but being landrover, has tha advantages of being cheap and easy to get

Did a little bit of fiddling with the rail today, pulled the rear drums off and binned the shoes and cylinders as everything was oil soaked from it's time on the rotisserie

Trying to keep it as minimalist  as possible,  also with a light rail, power assistance would most likely be overkill.
Over the next few days, hope to strip the rack and remove all the hydraulics, might even be able to reduce the width of it

Not planning on making kits for sale, but putting the info up for anyone to copy if they want too,
If I can get it done for under a ton, could  be cheaper than a new steering box, also if successful I will be converting my manta buggy, as it's king and link pin with a badly worn steering box
