Scant consolation, but I had a very similar incident 2 weeks ago when I put the first can of petrol into mine. One seriously sick to the pit of my stomach feeling as petrol poured onto the driveway.  Being from Yorkshire that was probably my inbuilt wasted cash reflex kicking in as much as anything
Still not 100% that I've sorted that yet

Buggy performed well, although discovered some more work to do...
Fuel tank breather needs to be re-routed, to stop pouring fuel all over the road and effecting my own air intake......
Drill a breather hole in the filler head (thanks shaggy for all the advice)
Adjust camber nuts (thanks peter for advice and again further advice from shaggy)
Replace coil overs on the rear with non coils.
Fuel line needs to be looked at, as I had problems when fuel got low, it was not flowing properly and causing engine to run thin or felt like was running on 3 cylinders

Steering needs close look at, very light..... Any know if the steering box can be adjusted for weight or reduction of play...... Mine is so very light and a much larger amount of play on it, since I replaced steering box, column and steering wheel.

Need to look at steering column mounting and clamping behind the dash board....

Fuel gauge is reading something, but god knows what, seems to be reversed ...!! It certainly moves. 

I think that is it for now, but it's enough....

Thanks Clem, do you mean track ends being tight etc, not being too far out of adjustment ??
Track rods far enough in the rods themselves, sorry not explaining myself well enough....

I forgot to mention, someone chipped my paint........ Whilst at the show, was not there yesterday, but there this PM, so can only assume someone looking rounds it, hit the edge and chipped it....

Ok, will have a look at that.... That whole section is new, end of column to steering box....

There something not quite right, never had that much play before the strip down, even with the tiny steering wheel I had, but as I said, I have changed a lot of stuff under there.

Investigations about fuel gauge today, turns out the vdo sender is for standard VW rating, 10-75 ohms
The gauge again vdo but from heritage, works ONLY with the universal sender, 10-180 ohms !!

So a spiyder box required.....

Buyer beware with senders and gauges.....

Ps. Vdo do not make the royale style gauge for VW standard ohms.....

Very true, but they get away with it by putting associated part link in their web site, but make no mention of the ohms range.....

Least machine. 7 tell you the range and it is specific to the VW standard range. They also sell the general sender, big price difference too.

So, vented my fuel filler head today...

Also started to fit my new breather pipe.... Wish I could just block it off, would be much easier..

Done my camber nuts.... Having done the camber nuts I also had a look at the play in the steering.
All joints down to the steering box are tight and all move in tandem.
I would estimate I have about 2-3 inches of play at the steering wheel, before the steering box starts to move the rods...!!

New rear shockers have arrived, so the coils will come off..
Anybody want to buy some lovely coil overs....??

If your box is sound and the wheel is tight the play must be at 1 side of the doughnut, to find it properly you need someone to sit in it rocking the wheel while you get dirty looking and feeling for where it's moving.
