I have noticed that after a run round the block that I have a big puddle of oil appearing when I stop and it appears to be originating from the area of the disptick.

Are there supposed to be any oil seals on the dipstick to prevent this?

The top of the (original) dipstick appears to be a "bell" shaped affair that goes over the top of the small tube on the engine, but there are no seals or anything in here.

Any advice?

Well the weather is hot!, and Beetle engines always like to blow a bit up the dipstick,so the warm weather makes it worse. Make sure your engine breathers are clear!. After an engine has stood over winter, it does need a little time to bed the rings in again, so can blow out of the breathers/ dip stick for a while.

Cheers Rob

Only breather I have is the small filter style one on the top of the oil filler tube - I don`t have any others that I am aware of.

Is this the one you mean?

Those little filters are buggers for clogging up!. Take it off and wash it out in a bit of petrol.

All those little 'filters' do is leak and cause leaks. If you throw it away and take a hose from the breather stub to the top of the air filter you'll cause slight suction in the crankcase. Good for preventing pulley leaks etc.

Some VW dipsticks had a little felt seal under that 'bell' to help seal.

If you run a pipe up as high as the top of the fan shroud and then back down and cut it off about 6ins off the ground, that will be fine

Update:

The dispstick had a lot of gunge in the bell shaped area, I guess its a decayed felt washer, so I cleaned out the mess and cut a piece of felt to suit. I also noticed that the dipstick was a relatively loose fit in the tube, so wth a bit of carefull bending, the result is a night tight dipstick with a felt end - and guess what - no leaks

;-)up

I`ll have a look at that little filter and pipework to the main air filter in due course, as that sounds a worthy modification, but at the moment, I`m just glad its not dumping oil so fast - means I can now think about booking an MOT

Joining this a bit late as I have been out all weekend in the buggy  :D

I had a similar problem a year ago.  Same issue with the dip stick.  Cleaned it and put some new felt and also bent it so it was a tighter fit.  That worked for a couple of weeks and then started again.  Took ManxDavids advice and ran a tube from the oil filler to the top of the filter on one of the carbs.

Been great ever since.   Was out all weekend in it and no leaks (and it was very hot weather).

I did this mod when I put my engine in after I first bought the buggy  :-)Geek

Although mine looks complicated it works very well. Ask Shaggy, the crud and moisture that gets drawn out is surprising  :o

So a good idea if you suffer problems like this  ;-)up

Well I`ve just run a pipe from the Oil inlet to the back of the air filter as suggested.

Will certainly be interesting this weekend to see how much oil I now have to clean off the trailer tent   :P

Will keep you posted  ;-)up

Unbeleiveable !!!

Just got back from NEWS and the engine is clean, no drip, no leaks and no runs - stunning !!

And all because of running that pipe from the oil inlet to the air filter   :o

Thanks guys, that was a top tip   ;-)up
