Any smartypants know how to flush a fuel tank ?
Been sitting for 35 years wiv fuel in it.... stinks like paint.
Oh, and can u get the gauze filters for where the fuel comes out (goes inside the tank)

I would pull the sender out and first jet wash it out and then have a look inside with a torch to see if its rusty if it looks fine leave it to dry out flush some fuel through it if it was me I would put a filter where the fuel comes out and one just before the carb use a see through one to moniter any dirt or particals of rust should be fine....

This might sound daft..... But what about a new tank?

Something that old and that has been sitting for so long is probably
wafer thin and has pinholes just ready to open up all over it

It is a fuel tank after all.....

Yep, to be honest, I'm on Peters side for a tank that old. Sure, power wash it and see what it's like, but anything more than a sign of rust (in this case), I would ditch it to save the bother.

I cheated a bit. It's for my splitty and the parts are notiriously expensive so I'm tryin to make do with what I have.  Tank looks pretty good, just concerned about the sludge that came out of it.

Yeah be careful I jet washed mine to flush it and get rust out, turns out the rust was the bottom of my tank so then leaked like a sieve full of pinholes

Before you go further with it... Temporarily block up all the holes except one that you can fit a water hose to. fill with water and look for any leaks that may occur. If you find any pin holes then drill them out to sound metal and braze over the holes. Retest till no leaks found

the ethanol will start eating it anyway, I covered my 2nd hand tank with a layer of fibreglass resin ( no matt or sheet) after cleaning and modifying before painting it but the ethanol will also consume that long term.
that just reminded me to look at ethanol fuel additives so I can go and get some for the fleet.

Steam cleaner would be the best bet IMHO.

Steam clean or jet-wash then put a couple of hand fulls of nuts and washers etc. in it, along with some paraffin or diesel. Block up all the holes then give it a damned good shake to scour out any remaining rust. Empty the tank then wash out with diesel again.

Filter.....
