That's the plan - just writing my to do list now:

Fit passenger seat
Fix gearshift
Fettle carb/timing (009 hesitation issue)
Fix oil leak
Find knocking from rear
Drop tyre pressures to try and soften ride
Set toe in on front

Think thats all I'll have time for, need to try and put a few miles on it as well as don't fancy Southsea 350m round trip as a maiden voyage

OK, done everything apart from the oil leak.

Took the shifter off and played around a bit with the mounting plate adjustment but not much better, have got a front bush and rear fork but won't have time to fit those.

Dropped the tyre pressures to 20 psi rear and 25 front, made a big difference to the ride - what do you guys normally run at?

looks great back together again, although it probably looks just like it did before to everyone so you will wonder what I have been doing the last 6 weeks 





Will have to try and get a few miles on it tomoz so I can decide if I am brave enough to run it down to Southsea

Just for completeness and incase anyone else ever comes across a similar problem, I will finish off the story of the fuse blowing on using the high beam flasher.

Having traced and checked all the wiring and sorted the headlamp plugs I though I was home dry. Lights worked great and flasher/lachcing relay all worked as intended. Screwed the fuse box all back up and mounted on the bulkhead. Everthing seemed great, and then I just checked the flashers with the ignition off - fuse blew again 

This was Thursday night and I was pretty narked TBH.

Had a cup of tea and swore a bit then started isolating circuits again. Thing was it was fine when the ignition was on but blew when the ignition was off - so what changes when the ignition is off?

Well the latching relay has two +ve feeds, one permanent (battery) going to terminal 30 and one switched +ve coming from the light switch going to terminal 56. The permanent feed allows you to flash the lights when the ignition is off and that tested OK, so something must change when the ignition is off that is causing a dead short.

Tested the other connections to the latch relay and the feed to 56 was showing as going direct to earth - aha 

Turns out the lights switch (which is a simple illuminated toggle) when parked at "off" instead of just disconnecting the switched circuit, it actually connects it to earth 

So when the ignition is on and the light switch is live, no probs - when I turned the ignition off and turned the light switch off that circuit became an earth so as soon as I energised the relay with the flasher I had a dead short!

So, at the moment the earth is disconnected from the toggle switches, only downside is they don't illuminate when on. I might keep an eye out for an original beetle headlamp switch and wire this in instead to get round the problem at some stage.

Lesson is, if you use a toggle switch for your lighting circuit check it doesn't switch to earth when off 

Through all of this as well as tracing all my circuits and rewiring the dash the one thing that kept me sane was Peter's wiring diagram, I definately owe you a beer for that one mate, without it I would have been lost!!!

Well, you still have some things to look at, but the problem is identified in the relay.

Go for a run, in a way its the only way to really check things out.

It's all off 

Final job before tomorrow was to drop the oil and fix the oil leak.

When I took the screen off it had a few bits of lint/dirt and a couple of small bits of metal (ringed in red) which was a bit worrying but not terminal.....



But caused me to have a fish around in the bottom of the sump and out came this




Its the skirt of a piston. Engine is running OK but no way to tell if this is off one of the pistons in there or from a previous failure. Either way if a lump of metal this big is rolling around in there then chances are the oil has been contaminated and will have dragged crap into the bearings etc so needs a complete strip down, inspection and rebuild.

Reckon that's me out of action for the rest of the summer
