Went for a ride out to a show on Sunday and had a few issues whish I believe are all related as they are mostly variations of the same thing.

1. Not long after setting off the buggy didn't feel right. A touch of hesitation a couple of times........ paranoia probably I thought.

2. Having done about 60 miles, mostly motorway, I came up to a junction, slowed down and then went to set off the engine died completely, as if I'd stalked it.....I hadn't. Had enough moment to coast to the side of the road.  Restarted straight away.

3. On the way home, came off a roundabout and floored it a bit, and again the engine tried to die. More or less jump started a couple of times with the momentum.

4. Wasn't running great on the motorway.  I noticed that the indicator tell tale in the dash was not flashing consistently. Sometimes long periods of the tell tale staying on.  Other times it was just a very laboured and irregular flash rate.

5. Nearly home, stood at a traffic light again the engine just died.  Started fine again.

So what do you think?
Coil on the way out? Ignition switch playing up?

Could be contacts in the ignition switch or is there a relay in the circuit causing an intermittent failure. Best a wire from battery + to the ciil and try again.
Could be a bad connection on furl shut off valve on the carb or a few other things if the above does not cure it.

I would also check the distributor cap for cracks or wear to the carbon bit in the centre of the cap.
The rabbit hole of Volkswagen ownership appears to be very deep indeed.

Coil was my first thought, but maybe not when I read about the indicator light?

I would be tempted check the earth from battery to chassis and chassis to engine
- a set of jump leads are great for quickly diagnosing that one  ;-)up

Yes, my thoughts too. Initially it seemed to point to the coil. There have been a few coils issues Over recent years that I'm aware of. They displayed similar symptoms.
The indicator business doesn't tie in though, at least not yo my mind.
Anyway, I've got s new coil, and s new ignition switch.  Already got the screen and bonnet off so might as well try the switch first.
There's no obvious signs of damage to the old switch wiring. It does however look as though I didn't fully insert the old switch. The securing grub screw has clearly self tapped a bit off line.  Maybe this has resulted in a bit of play, causing the internals to not always connect securely?
There have been a few occasions when turning the key has resulted in absolutely nothing. No solenoid click etc. Then usually started on yhe next attempt.

A new (old) potential culprit.
I wired in an ignition isolation switch way back when.  Something I'd more or less forgotten about and no longer use due to other security measures put in place.
So the top and bottom of it is, that switch may be failing. Anyway that's coming out.
So we may never get a definitive conclusion as I'm changing 2 things at once.

Always risky, although it's a fault that needs full reassembly to test so makes sense.

Have you ruled out flooding?
My twin carbs used to get warm from the manifolds and pressurise a bit when the engine stopped, causing it to flood.
Could hear fuel fizzing in the float chambers when it was really hot. Slightly thicker gasket under tge carb fixed it

So then, the latest update.

Short story, maximum embarrassment for me.
Put the new ignition switch in yesterday, and spent an age fixing my odometer  whilst I had the bonnet  off. This morning thought it wise to make sure everything was working before putting thr bonnet and screen back on.
Turned the key, nothing. Tried the hazards, nothing..........3 hours, count 'em and weep, I realised I'd not put thr battery cut off key in.
Apparently that's what Mrs Buggybaggy was refering to when she asked if I'd done the thing at the back. I thought she meant connected the battery terminal, which I had!!
In the meantime the ignition barrel, the key bit has given up thr ghost. The little gateway that your key pushes aside has gone squiffy and will no longer allow the key to go in. Aaarrrgghhh!
Anyway, bonnet back on, screen back on, and I didn't fully check everything was OK. The oil and generator lights in the speedo no light constantly, but the larger auxiliary ones I have on the dash work fine so no big deal.
Currently making up for a not so miss spent youth by using a screwdriver to start the buggy. Something I have never done before.
Test drive went well. It was running better than it did at any time on Sunday, so happy days.
