Swing axle....... Adjuster stars are on the bottom and as snoopy says access through the drum. When you get the drum off take a look at the "adjuster" body. On it`s underside there is a "spring metal" leaf with an inverted V shape each end. The v locates into a star wheel tooth to keep it in the position you have adjusted to. If it`s not there the shoe adjustment won`t stay correct for long. These metal "leaf" bit`s are available, (or were), from Heritage etc. They simply locate into the casting and kept in place via the casting grooves. (If the adjuster body" is totally decrepit then these grooves may will be long gone. Ah... the fun of refurbing vehicles that have been in the UK weather for 50 plus years.  ;D  :'(  )

To be honest I'd try adjusting before taking the hub off. You'll need to back the shoes off anyway to get the drums off

Thanks everyone for all your advice, I really appreciate it.

I went to have a look at the timing today and found that the ignition switch wouldn't stay on. Removed the steering wheel, undone the barrel plate and the switch fell apart  ::). New one ordered.
In the meantime I'll get the wheels off and see if I can adjust the brakes from the drum side.

Just a quick note -

Make sure you get yourself down to Swanage at the end of the month for the Carnival - If the Buggy is running, then excellent, but if not, then I`m sure we can find some empty seats for the cruise around - But you might find that having a face to face chat with us about your niggles may prove invaluable
