Hi I'm new here so Hello! I've just purchased what I think is a FF beach buggy with a 1600cc engine in, I haven't taken delivery yet but in the process so no doubt when it arrives I'll be a regular on here. I do have a question though it's listed as a 72 floor pan but registered as a "Q" plate in 86 does anyone know if it's legal to register the buggy if I was to by a beetle title and put the chassis number and orginal engine number together as obviously it still requires not and tax. Welcome a Q is fine and 1986 means 2026 it is 40 years old so a trip to the post office to tax it an apply for historic will save paying the road tax every year as DVLA have had to change their minds now Q plates are getting over 40 years old.
Q means it is properly registered and untouchable by DVSA unlike a post 1998 swb build that has a beetle saloon log book although the chance of getting a V5 pulled is very very slim.

Any vehicle with a  Q plate is correctly registered, so no reason whatsoever to mess about with it, even if you do not like the wording or description.

Whilst a 40 year old Q plate can now be registered for Historic tax, this can only be done when the 40 years have elapsed - it can depend on which month your V5 starts from. As an example, I had a historic bike that whilst in its 40th year, I could not register it in March, because my V5 started in August - I had to pay tax, and then in August sorn the bike to claim the tax back and then apply for it to go back on the road as Historic - They wouldnt let me change to historic during the period that they had my money for tax if that makes sense.

Absolutely makes sense! The Q plate really doesn't bother me neither does the tax really but it all adds up and who likes paying tax anyway ha ha agai. Thanks for the help.

Hello and welcome!

The current process seems to be that it becomes eligible for Historic tax from the April following the car's 40th birthday (next tax year).

The post office will send your ammended V5C off for you and any tax payed will be refunded in the form of a cheque (remember them!).
